Today's Everyday Fashion: Mustard Tights

This winter I made a goal to experiment with tights more and I'm jumping in feet-first! (because that's how one generally puts on tights, after all) I ordered a bunch of colors - gold and hunter green in today's post, and navy from yesterday's post. The gold (aka mustard) is definitely going to be the hardest to style but I'm giving it a go in today. I decided to play it safe and show a smaller amount of leg for this first look, although I'm still not sure that I don't look part Oompa Loompa, so I also tried it with hunter green. Which look is your favorite? How do you style mustard tights?

  1. Hey J!  This mustard tight thing is tough.  I also have a pair I bought at Target maybe 2 years ago and it is hard to pull off.  I like the look on the right better for now, but only because I think with colored tights, you almost need to wear them with a shorter style skirt if you wear knee boots or dress to show more leg.  I would wear an ankle boot with them instead with a knee length skirt, but I definitely understand how you are a little weary about wearing the colored tights in the first place, as I felt the same way and kind of still do.  Mine just sit in my drawer for the majority of the year!  LOL!  You definitely have to be out of your comfort zone to wear them for sure!  Love love love the look on the right though!  Your shirt is so pretty and that necklace is gorgeous!!  xx

  2. I love this.  I have a pair of mustard colored tights and never know how to wear them.  I am currently searching for a casual navy dress to wear with them and my Fryes.

  3. I like the mustard tights with the white shirt & grey skirt. It's just the right amount of color to spice up your "normal" outfit. You did a great job styling the tights!!

  4. I want that necklace!  I have been looking for a great statement necklace!  I love the look with the heels!

  5. I'm not sold on colored tights either.  Jentine at My Edit posted about this the other day.  It's a tricky look to pull off.  It's good that you are wearing a longer skirt and high boots so just a hint of the mustard comes through.  I prefer the black tights with the cute grey shoes.  It's fun to experiment with fashion and step outside of our comfort zones though!

  6. I love this outfit and I definitely think the hunter green tights are the best choice. I feel that the mustard tights would be better paired with a fun dress - maybe polka dots.

  7. I like the second look. I don't know about the gold tights though. But then again I never tried color till I came across your blog. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Coloured tights are hard too pull off in general.  I am not sure what it is, but I am still not totally on board with the trend.  I like the hunter green tights in this post!

  9. I also like mustard tights best with boots:

But I wore them with wedges once:

Maybe I looked like Big Bird, but didn't care!

  10. I like the one on the right best! I'm so happy I found your blog, I totally wore a J's Everyday Fashion inspired outfit to work today. Pencil skirt, tshirt, and cardigan. xo Jet

  11. This is such a cute look. I think I like the mustard tights but would have paired them with black boots. This may even inspire me to dress up tomorrow!

  12. I'm loving the hunter green, but I cannot handle the mustard tights!  I think my main issue is the mixture of grey, an orange-y brown, and mustard.  Maybe if the boots were more of a chocolate brown?  I don't know...  I'm okay with mixing black (or grey) and brown, but those mustard tights are no good.  On second thought, maybe the boots are a little too casual for me...?

  13. Love it Jet! Definitely sounds like a J outfit. :-)

  14. Thanks Leigh! Tights on the right are hunter green. They are definitely very green in person, but I like them b/c they aren't too far off from black and should be pretty easy to style!

  15. Thanks for the tips, Pip! :-)

  16. Personally, I think you have too much going on with the mustard. Try a patterned dress instead, or a solid with fun accessories/jacket. The hunter is safe, but maybe try a pattern for a little more visual interest?

Love that you experiment AND that you share it with us! Thanks for your fashion creativity :)

  17. I like the hunter green tights the best with this particular outfit!

  18. I like the hunter green tights better with this outfit. I think that when you can only see a sliver of the mustard ones, like in this outfit, it looks like the bright yellow is your skin, not tights, & that contributes to the Oompa Loompa effect. I've fallen victim to this a few times before I finally figured it out!

  19. I prefer the Hunter Green -- but good for you for testing the waters! Definitely inspired to be a bit more brave!

  20. I'm loving colored tights this autumn-winter season. I have tomato red, purple and blue ones, and thinking about buyind a pair of green ones)))

  21. Very impressed with your styling of different colored tights this year! I think berry/cobalt/purple would be as out there as I could get with tights but I'm digging those hunter green! I think that mustard is so bright that it would look best with a more casual outfit?

  22. I've jumped in head first this fall/winter too. I think you're doing great. Love the gold. It is much more bold for sure.

  23. I love how you styled the mustard tights! I had a hard time styling mine s well at first, but I've found quite  a few looks I like. I try to keep the rest of the outfit fairly simple, and often use them as a color-blocking piece :)

  24. Ha I did the same thing this winter - bought burnt orange tights thinking I'd wear them so many different ways!  Wore them once - you judge the results -

P.S.  I love your hunter green and navy tights but think your yellow ones are a bit of a miss, much like my orange ones!x

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm a big believer that nothing is ever a miss! An outfit can be a miss, but I would never write an item off that quickly. It's all about how you style it and try, try again in my book! :-)

  26. I like both of them, but I think the mustard tights are a more unique look. You're pulling it off well! :) Don't you LOVE We Love Colors??!! They sent me some tights awhile ago that are now my FAV!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Maybe we should both give them another go then!x

  28. I agree! The challenge is on chica! Knock 'em dead. ;-)

  29. Thanks for this suggestion Sarah! Polka dots + mustard tights seems kind of loud to me, but it's at least worth a shot!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yep! This is my first experience with them and the tights are great!

  31. I just happened upon your blog and I love it, it is darling!! Your fashionable outfits are great and perfect for the reader to gage how the different looks work and what might be the best pick for them. I personally love both tights, I think the yellow looks great with the boots...less dressy than the green tights, but both are perfect pops of color! So happy I found your site and I hope you are having a wonderful week!!

  33. J, I love your outfit on the right!  I'm not feelin' the gold tights as much, just too loud!

  34. I spotted that gold watch bracelet the other day on an old post of yours and I was dying over it! You have it listed for $10, but I can't seem to find it for cheaper than $34. I want to buy it! Is there something I'm not seeing on the price, because I need it?

  35. Try the mustard tights with blue or a blue/green... just a thought.  I love the green tights outfit on the right!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think the brown boots totally throw off the look on the left. It would look a lot better with a black suede platform pump with a thick heel

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like the mustard, but not with a tall boot.  Perhaps a bootie or a round toe pump.

  38. Whitney, the first rule of shopping Banana is that prices are always better in stores! (see my post about it here: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/04/todays-everyday-fashion-secrets-of.html) I think this bracelet was $18 or $20 in the store, and Banana has been doing an extra 30-50% off sale over the past couple weeks, depending on which day you go! I would call your local store and see if they have it & how much they are selling it for.

  39. Those mustard tights look awesome!  Amazing what tights can do to an outfit!

  40. I LOVE the mustard tights with the knee boots!!!!! I think if you showed any more color than what you are, it would be too much--mustard overload. I read the other comments about the mustard tights and I think it possibly could be the color of the skirt that's throwing it off. Maybe try a tan color skirt with a cream/off white top/sweater so it's not as stark a contrast as the gray? If you had a scarf or something with the mustard/tan/rust brown colors in it, I think that would tie it all together. Just a thought! Not a fan of the green tights for some reason.

  41. I'm loving today's jewelry! I've been looking for a great snake bracelet and I would totally go buy yours if I wasn't on a shopping ban!

  42. Mustard tights are so fun and bold, and i love them with the soft grey. I have to get mine out this year!

  43. World you say the third picture would be acceptable to wear to work? I usually wear flats and black pants but since I've found your blog I've decided to dress up a tad more.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love that you can put more than one outft together with similar items! I also love the necklace! :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jeanette, that totally depends on your dress code! It meets all the "basic" requirements for work - knee length skirt, no cleavage, even the shoes are close-toe. The only thing that might not work is if your office is super-casual (there is such thing as being too dressed up!) or if "stylish" things are frowned upon, like if you work in the bank industry. Overall though I think it's a pretty safe bet!

  46. I love tights. I have some magenta ones that I pair with a grey tweed skirt and black boots or shoes. I have that bib necklace but have not figured out how to wear it yet. Thanks for the idea!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love this look!  I prefer the hunter green, but I think (in the picture at least?) that the brown of the boots might be too yellow-toned to really suit the mustard tights.  But I'm sure that you're going to find a really fabulous way to wear those mustard ones!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Definitely digging the hunter green. LOVE that outfit. Maybe with a different shoe color the mustard would pop better?

  49. Hey J!

Long time reader, first time comment. I really like the mustard tights but I think you may just have to dive right in instead of wearing the boots to cover up a little. The boots with that much color make the outfit a little too choppy. Maybe try the same outfit with a cute pair of flats or pumps and see if they add that pop of color you're looking for? Not a fashion expert like you, just a thought :) Have a nice day!

  50. do you find that the we love colors tights are very opaque? i find it hard to find ones that are opaque enough.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Danielle, I'm relatively new to tights (only tried a couple brands) but these seem really opaque to me! They have some options on their website too of how thick you want them.

  52. As a Western NY gal (where it is currently 18* and snowing!), I SO appreciate you posting all these looks with tights! Thank you J!

  53. Hey J!!!  I just wanted to let you know that I highlighted you on my blog post today.  I commented below on how hard it is to wear these tights, and today I did a post on how to wear an Emilio Pucci style dress and used my ugly Mustard tights under the dress because it is the only way I can wear them.  :)  Anyways, I love your blog and wanted others to see yours and see how you wore your tights too!!!  xx

  56. I have hunter green tights (and navy) and have trouble styling both. I tend to find styling black or brown easy because if you wear a black or brown skirt it just continue it. Or if you wear black or brown boots.  I need help styling the rest!  Once you get more into your new tights, do you plan to do a single post with all the outfits with tights that you have done? (I hope so!)

    My tights label
http://scrapandrun.blogspot.com/search/label/tights (and I probably forgot to use tights as a label half the time.  I just scrolled through it and each time I wore green I hate it. Man I need help)

  57. I love this idea and will def plan on doing a post like that, thank you! I hear what you are saying, but navy/hunter seemed like a good baby step since really they are so similar to black/brown if you think about it. Mustard and purple (the other colors I got) are throwing me for a loop. That said, I think you did a great job styling your tights! I loved the mustard top/pop of turquoise look.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks about the mustard/turquoise one. I wasn't actually sure about it when I wore it the first time but I got compliments so now I wear that same exact combo all the time.
