Today's Everyday Fashion: Sweater Tights

This is my first-ever attempt at wearing sweater tights! I was expecting them to be way comfier than regular tights, but to be honest, they weren't. Not sure if it's just these particular tights, but they were actually more itchy and also kind of fit funny. I still think sweater tights are a great way to winterize an outfit though, and with a coat/gloves/hat this would be perfect outfit for a chilly day. How do you wear sweater tights?

Inspiration photo: Banana Republic
Jacket: Target, $30 (old)
Shirt: Limited (old)
Skirt: J.Crew, $45
Belt: H&M, $20
Gray sweater tights: Chinese Laundry c/o Marshall's, $5 (recent)
Boots: Bakers, $90

  1. I agree sweater tights aren't always comfortable so I recommend fleece lined tights!

  2. Thay are the only way you could winterize skirts and dresses in colder climates, other than that you could only wear pants - and even under those you usually need tights or leggings (when T drops below 0C (30F)). So I wear them with skirts, also could be worn with winter shorts (sometimes those sweather tights, sometimes thinner regular ones...nude or black/brown/whatever depending on the rest of the outfit, especially shoes and skirt b/c they are directly "connected" to those...)
I like this particular outfit, and you nailed the insp. photo, the only thing that A BIT distracts me is the dark color of the tights... are they black? Maybe some brownish color would "mend" better with the rest of the outfit, colorwise... just a thought :)

  4. Ana, the tights are gray! I agree - it's hard to tell in the photo.

  5. I recently went on a tights craze...I'm wearing dark green ones today! (And its about 27F outside.) I've always had the idea that sweater tights would be too bulky and uncomfortable to wear, but never tried it. Sounds like your pair isn't that comfy...But I do agree tights are the way to go (and especially color tights to bring a little life to dark winter outfits)

ps. I love that skirt and love the way you have paired it with so many outfits (especially on your Europe trip). Currently J Crew has the same skirt in orange and grey, but I've been trying to find it in either a brown or a tan color like what you have. Have you seen it anywhere else, or similar styles?

  6. I hate sweater tights! They are so itchy and the crotch hangs low in every pair I've ever worn haha! My sister usually wears solid color tights with lacy/patterned tights over. I recently found a pair of fleece lined leggings at TJ Maxx and I'm in love.

  7. I found that Anne Klein sweater tights are amazing not itchy and very warm. I love them because i'm not a big fan of pants even in the winter.

  10. I love sweater tights because they are so much harder to ruin than normal tights! My normal tights seem to get runs the moment I put them on.

  11. The best pair of sweater tights are from discount dance supply. They are a wool nylon mix I think Bloch or Grishko make them and since they are for dancing in they don't really sag too much even after 6 hours of dancing and just hanging out on them. Plus they are soft from the start and don't itch. Hope this helps.

  12. Wear mine with a long tunic and knee high boots that have a heel or wedge.  In the winter, they definitely are great and I can honestly say that they are warm.  I have been known to wear them under my jeans on really cold days because I am cold all the time.

  13. I've had problems with itchy sweater tights, too, so this year I bought J. Crew's heather carbon tights. They're expensive for tights ($24.50), but they're super stretchy and comfy and so thick that it's nearly impossible to poke a hole in them. I've decided their durability made the higher price worth it in the end -- I can't tell you how many times I've worn $5 tights and torn them on the first wear!

  14. I agree with Beth Addis, I wear mine with a tunic and boots. I like them cause they are warmer (esp. in this Midwest weather).

  15. Of all the sweater tights I've worn, my most comfortable pair comes from Kohl's (Apt. 9 brand).  They are just thick enough for warmth without being bulky.  They are an essential though in the middle of winter here in Ohio.  Love how you paired your tights with the camel colored skirt.

  17. In Orlando, Walgreens sells fleece lined tights.  Seemed kind of a strange place for them, but maybe they're a popular item to fly home in?

  18. Technically, I was in Lake Buena Vista, so they were probably catering to Disney tourists, including those who have long transatlantic flights.

  21. Sweater tights remind me of my childhood (I grew up in Boston) -- and they were always SO FREAKING ITCHY. They look look cute though!

Fleece lined leggings sound interesting - let me know if/where you find any!

  22. Good to know, thanks Nikki!

  23. The crotch hangs low in these too. It's... awkward. Thanks for the tip though!

  24. That would be my guess, too! Although it does seem like Walgreens carries some random stuff. :-)

  25. Thank you! I love this skirt too. It's a thick wool, I got it last year. I just did an online search but didn't see anything. If I find anything similar i'll let you know!

  26. Fleece lined tights are fantastic. Whenever I wear sweater tights, I end up layering them. I know it sounds crazy to wear a pair of opaque tights and then sweater tights, but it does cut down on the itchiness ...

  27. I think it sounds genius! I remember how cold it used to get in Boston, that's a great idea to double up.

  28. I got some fleece lined leggings at Gordman's.  I LOVE them.  They are so warm!

  29. lol. Yeah, I just moved to Western Mass a few months ago. I've been debating how many layers I can manage before I cut off circulation. :D

  30. I think my issue with them is that they don't seem to stay tight! They kind of...sagged...instead of clinging to my legs properly! I personally end up sticking to thick/opaque tights with a lot of stretch. I swear, there is nothing worse than having to constantly yank up your tights...so unladylike ;) HAHA!
