Today's Everyday Fashion: The Morning News

Last weekend I had my most challenging fashion question EVER. While I was in Kansas, Fox news got in touch and wanted me to come for an interview on their morning show. An amazing opportunity, but I didn't bring a single thing that was appropriate!! I groaned out loud when I thought of all the perfect dresses and shoes at home in Orlando that would work, but of course I packed very casual for my trip so all I had was short shorts, too short dresses, and casual shoes. And get this: I only had 5 minutes of time to spare for a shopping trip to the mall. So how did I wind up with this outfit? Instead of wasting time running through the mall on a goose chase, I came up with a plan! I figured that these were the dressiest shoes I brought, I had 3 cardigans with me, along with some fun belts and necklaces. I essentially decided that a white dress would be the perfect fill-in-the blank piece, and after a quick internet search I headed to American Eagle. I asked a manager for help and within 5 minutes I was in this dress for only $20! (This dress is very similar if you are looking for one.) Not my ideal outfit for the news, but it did the trick. And now I have a cute white dress to boot.  :-)

What was your craziest fashion emergency and how did you solve it?

Occasion: Fox 4 morning news interview
Dress: American Eagle, $20
Belt: Gap, $40
Cardigan: Gap, $18
Necklace: H&M, $14
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8
Shoes: c/o Chinese Laundry

  7. That's the worst, having an unexpected occassion come up on a trip and having the perfect outfit at home! But way to pull it together, you look super cute! I also like how you don't discriminate when it comes to where you shop; most people would think that American Eagle is just for the high school set, but you show that you can find cute clothes and great deals anywhere!

  9.  Hi J! Wondering if you had any ideas for what to wear with this skirt I snagged on clearance from the Gap:

The print is brown. I'm a teacher, so being covered up on top is necessary. A white shirt didn't look quite right (the skirt is more of an off-white). Any ideas?

    Love the blog!

  11. Jessie, thank you! I would wear a dark brown top, or you could go with an olive shirt, cognac belt and shoes. You could even try hot pink or cobalt blue and see how that looks!

It was only an emergency because I waited until the last minute to look for a formal dress for my sorority formal in college. I couldn't find one that bit my budget so I ran to Express and Claire's and bought a sparkly black headband and a huge rhinestone broach to pin to the empire seam of a some-what casual jersey dress...ended up looking cute and 50's-ish :)

  15. Hi J, cute outfit! I was also wondering if you knew any stores/websites that sell hot pink blazers, similar to the one by Zara. The one shown on the website is not hot pink, but it looks like this.

The color is more like this one though.

I LOVE this blazer but the material and the quality could be better for the price. Thank you so much. =)

  16. I can't believe you put this together in 5 minutes.  White dresses are so versatile so that was a smart strategy.  I am a huge fan of that h&m necklace, did you get it recently?

  17.  Is your necklace recent? I bought a navy blue dress for my friend's wedding next month and I was thinking turquoise jewelry would be a nice touch...and very summery!

  18. Thanks Shannon! I just got the necklace a couple weeks ago!

  19. Toni, I just got it a couple weeks ago! I also wore it for this co-hosting gig with navy blue. (apparently this necklace is good for TV haha!) http://www.izonorlando.com/2011/05/central-florida-top-5-season-1-episode-6/

  20. Mel, I've been looking for a hot pink blazer for awhile now but haven't seen any other than Zara. I think the best bets are H&M, Topshop, ASOS, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters.

  23. I love the white-turquoise-brown combination. I gotta get a tan before I can wear white though. I am still way to white to look good in white :)

There are cute white dresses at Old Navy and there is an awesome deal on Groupon until tomorrow I believe.

  24. I really like the way you styled the dress here
Can't believe you only paid 20 bucks what a steal
My weirdest fashion emergency was when I was pregnant with son1
Getting dressed for a wedding and went to put on my shoes, had no idea your foot grew 5 sizes bigger when you were pregnant
Husband and stopped at a Payless shoe store on the way to the wedding to purchase a pair of shoes.

  25. I think it turned out pretty well - on such short notice :)
Well, I had a recent incident.I was in a business trip in South America and ALTHOUGH I DID check the weather channel before packing, all my destinations were way, WAY colder than expected.
I needed a black scarf and I had not packed one so I turned my pullover vest into one: http://myeverydaywear.blogspot.com/2011/05/pullover-to-scarf.html

  26. I love this outfit!  You'd never think that this was thrown together in just a matter of minutes.  It just proves that a few great pieces put together in the right way can make an amazing outfit!
