Today's Everyday Fashion: The Alternate

When I brainstormed outfits for my trip to Kansas last week, this is one of the outfits I came up with for my "Shop with J" event. I wound up going with the mustard cardigan instead (which is good because it was chilly that day!) but I love the versatility of these shorts and being able to wear something tucked in, or a shirt un-tucked like I did here.

Styling tips: This is my third time wearing this polka dot shirt and while the 3 looks have been pretty different they do have one thing in common - a red belt! It's true that I am a bit obsessed with belts, but in this case I really like the pop of color, and it also shows the shape of my waist under all those ruffles. The thing to remember about belts: they are good for both adding color AND creating shapes!

  1. I just want to say that I love your blog and your ideas!  The new website is fabulous as well.  :)  THis outfit is really well put together and the shoes are perfect, (as wedges are definitely meant to be worn with shorts).  Love it!  I have a blog as well, and hope I can inspire women as much as you do with my own ideas and advice.  I am doing mine on how to be chic as a stay at home mom (since it is easy to lose your sense of fashion once becoming a mom).  I just haven't gotten into the fashion side of things yet.  But it will be soon.  I love how you list the stores for your online shopping guide too.  That is just a fabulous idea, as we women want to know any stores that we aren't familiar with.  Keep up the fabulous work dear.  Here is my blog if you are ever interested in checking it out.  I am quite to the point, so it may work for some and not others.  LOL!

  3. That red polka dot top is so cute!  For some reason, I never thought to pair red with khaki. Duh!  I always want to pair it with black. I do love me some belts, especially my red one.

  4. This shorts look so great on you! I love the color and the loose fit; however, on the model on the unique closet the leg of the short looks so tight. Did you size up in these shorts?

Andrea, thank you! I am wearing my usual size (a Small). Not sure what's up with the model in the pictures - I'm guessing she has bigger hips/a booty or it almost looks like they are size too small? I find these to be pretty loose-fitting! :-)

  8. I love this top!! You look great as always! Quick question for you....any advice on where to find longer tunic-like tops to wear with cropped leggings for Spring/Summer? I can dress casual at work on Fridays and want to wear a longer top with leggings and flats as an alternative to just wear pants. I work with kids so just a dress (with nothing underneath) is out of the question! I need to find small-sized tops as well.

    Love your blog :)

  9. Thanks Amanda! The dresses are so short at Forever 21 a lot of them would work as a longer top with leggings. :-) Also, anything labeled as a "tunic"  at any store basically means it is too long to be a shirt, and too short to be a dress which would be perfect for you. They have them all over right now, so pretty much any store will have them. You can also check out my "Online Shopping Guide" (a blue link in the right column of the blog) for a bunch of fun boutiques and store ideas!

  11. Thanks so much for the advice! I was running errands with my mom today and picked up a shirt-type dress that came with a belt around it, along with two really cheap Spring-like dresses that are a bit short and perfect with leggings.
