Today's Everyday Fashion: Cardigan Collector

A couple nights ago I attended a women's networking event. It was a chilly night, which gave me the perfect excuse to wear my new Gap cardigan! It's the closest thing to camel I've been able to find, so of course I had to have it. :-)

Style question: How many cardigans do you own? A fan recently asked me, so I counted and I have 15 (make that 16 with the purchase of this one!). Is that unusually high (am I a "cardigan collector")? Or is that less than you would have guessed?

Occasion: Women's networking event
Inspiration photo: Ann Taylor
Cardigan: Gap, $18 ("winter ochre," price is lower in stores)
Shirt: Arden B, really old
Jeans: Gap, $15
Belt: H&M, $20
Necklaces: Banana Republic $18 and $13
Shoes: Restricted/Endless.com, $39
Bracelets: Banana Republic, $10-15

  1. I love this outfit! I own way too many cardigans (maybe 30). My number one weakness is J Crew cardigans.

  2. I am going to get that cardigan too. I am also a cardigan collector. You look beautiful wearing this outfit. The color suits you well.

  3. 1) I have that cardi, wore it last week. My husband referred to the color as "Butternut" which I prefer over "Winter Ochre" as I actually know what Butternut is. 2) I have lost count of cardigans that I own. I know I have *at least* 35 - 40 out right now and even more short-sleeve in storage. Borderline ridiculous? Sure. But I do believe that the cardigan is the most versatile piece in my wardrobe. Shoot, I even named my new blog - itsmycardi.blogspot.com - after my love of the cardigan!

  4. I like "butternut" too! Although I may continue to delude myself and call it "camel." :-) I totally agree that cardigans are the most versatile (and cozy) things out there, so I'm envious of your collection. I have a feeling if you give me a year or two I'll be at that number too!

  5. I only have 8 cardis, but I'm just now ramping up my collection. I think 16 is a good number. Hmmm, so is 20...

  7. I probably have at least 10 cardigans in an assortment of colors. I love throwing them over sleeveless shirts, graphic t's, collared shirts, etc. They make everything look more polished.

  8. LOL! I know you are only kidding, but that is actually my job! I do marketing coaching for small business and my area of expertise is social media. :-)

  9. Jeans and cardis! These are my favorite things! I can count around 10 cardis off the top of my head

  10. It is amazing how you can do this! I am always surpised to see just how close the two actually are. hmmm I have ALOT of cardigans. so dont feel bad. I even have two in the same color but one being a boyfriend cut and another being more short and classic. maybe I am the only one who thinks the two are very different!

  11. Actually, J, I was only partly kidding. I know that's your job! With only 100 followers so far, this is still a ways off, but I'm curious about how to possibly make a career out of it. As a stay-at-home mom of a toddler, I have the free time to explore it, so I'm giving it a go. I have lots of questions about what it takes to earn money at blogging (beginning with how to build my audience), but I'm not quite ready to put money INTO it yet. So, for future reference, could you send me an email about what it is you actually do for clients? Would we be a good fit? What are your rates? I'm definitely in the information-gathering stage.
    Thanks!

  13. Nice cardigan J.. now you gonna make me starts collecting them. By the way, I'd love to see pencil skirts in your Friday Flasback... I am trying to wear more skirts to work... I work for an insurance company - an IT nerd. :)

  14. Erin, I don't actually make any money from my blog directly. I've turned the skills I've developed into a part-time career, but I don't make any revenue from this website. I found a great article on the topic that you should check out, but in general making $ from a blog or website is a really long shot. http://theblogstylist.com/ask-bree-how-do-bloggers-make-money-blogging/

My coaching is about how to market your small business online, so I can definitely help you get more fans, but as far as monetizing a blog, that's not an area of expertise for me! :-)

  15. I have a ton, which is probably why I like your style, I love cardigans! And bc I live in the northeast, I have winter and summer ones based on their material. It's a lot of cardigans

  16. Thanks, J. I was really curious if you were able to monetize your blog, but didn't want to ask. I'm heading over to check out that article now. If I DO manage to come up with a money-making small business, you'll be the first person I call!

  17. Someone a few months ago noticed I have a cardigan collection as well... I just counted 32. I just love them because I have some that are thin, others that are for colder days, cropped ones for dresses, printed cardigans, ones with "razzle dazzle", long ones (for with leggings)... the list goes on. I love them because for me, I can throw on a dress or a simple tank top, but then my cardigan changes my whole look. I often use it a the standout piece. Also, I love doing something simple like buying a pack of brooches at H&M for $6.99 and adding it to the cardigan somewhere. A cardigan is my favorite thing to pick up when thrifting, and slouchy, grandpa ones are always in the men's section :).

I don't think you are a cardigan collector yes... I would say the collector would have 30... I have 16, too. ;) I love the look BTW. I am trying to find a sparkly T like yours without paying a million bucks for it. I haven't tried Arden B.... have a great weekend! Cheers!

I agree! Cardi's are the best way to be versatile - and they aren't expensive (or don't have to be) and are comfy/cozy! Cheers!

  24. I have around 30. I LOVE cardigans. It the main way that I incorporate color into my wardrobe. Normally, I am a neutral color person. I love the blacks, greys, browns and whites. However, I will buy my cardigans in many different colors, patterns and styles. It's my main accessory. However, I WILL NOT REST until I find one in that mustard color. Never thought I would have an obsession with that color, but I am CRAZY IN LOVE with it.

  25. Try Express. I bought a coral colored one similar to the one J has on. Should have bought the gold as well. I do plan to go back and get it.

  26. I'm not really a fan of cardigans. I think it's cos I wore them so much when I was a kid that I'm cardiganed out!

  27. The cardigan looks better on you that the model! You certainly have a way of maximizing the appeal with your items, they always look great.

  31. You can find deals like this in the sale section in Gap stores.I found a silk shirt for $10 the other day, and I picked up these jeans a couple months ago! I've heard of people getting way better deals even (jeans for $5 and under!!).

  34. I LOVE cardigans! I probably have about ten, but I always find one in a color I wear a lot, or in one that will add a pop of color to an outfit. Love those layered necklaces!

  35. I really love the color of this cardigan! I have 29!! Wow. I think I need to cut back. I always buy them on sale, anytime of the year. I can't resist, because I'm always a little chilly (work, movies, restaurants, airplane, etc!).

  37. I low-balled that number quite a bit - I actually counted earlier out of morbid curiosity when I was putting away laundry. 55. FIFTY-FIVE. And as I said, I have more in storage; probably at least 20 more. I have a problem of epic proportions, I think. This is made even worse due to the fact that I purge clothes pretty regularly. Wow.

  38. Only 11 for me but I bought 4 since December, 2 on sale at Old Navy and 2 on sale at Target. I'm sure there are more in my future.

  39. Nah, that's not that many. That is a normal amount I think. I haven\t counted them but I must say I have at least close to 50, both long and short cardis. If I count the flyaway cardigans I have even more. I have so many in solid colors but also in prints such as florals, paisley, some sequined, stripped, zebra, leopard, you name it. White House Black Market makes beautiful cardigans. Their detailing is on the buttons especially. They are not cheap as they run from 68$ to 108$ each usually but I worked there for over a year and collected several which I got for a decent price. I absolutely love them! Also I can always find amazing cardigans at The Limited, Loft, J. Crew & Banana.
