Today's Everyday Fashion: Celeb vs. Real Life

Inspiration: FabSugar

Reese Witherspoon looks adorable, but let's face it - sometimes celebrity looks just don't hold up in real life! I bought this Gap hat on a whim last week and immediately regretted it. Her hat is arguably cuter (mine is a bit Pilgrim-esque), but I also just feel silly wearing a fedora out and about. Would love to hear what you think though - does this celebrity outfit work in real life? Where would you wear it?

  1. I love your outfit.  I agree with you about the hat, something isn't quite right.  But, it doesn't look bad!

  2. I think you look fabulous, but maybe a smaller hat (shorter, with a shorter brim) would look more fashionable? I don't know--hats intimidate me. Maybe you could post more outfits with hats this year--a mini fashion goal!

  3. I like the concept or theory of this look, however, I am not a fan of the hat or the longer denim shirt sleeves under the shorter arms on the sweater.  It would definitely work with a black cardigan or if the sleeves on the sweater were longer.  Either way, you always look great!  Heather

  4. I love Fedoras- own more than I can count! I have straw summer ones to plaid wool ones and everything in between! I really want a burgundy one- but haven't bit the bullet yet. I couldn't do the big floppy brim hats but a slim brim Fedora works!

  5. I love the hat you have!  I would wear this to the farmer's market on Saturday, or when I walk my dogs.  Very cute.

  6. I like the hat, but in this picture it almost looks like a winter hat.  I wonder how it would look with a wool coat, scarf, and leather gloves or some outdoor weather gear..?  Not that you need it in Florida!!

  7. I wish I could get away with a hat, but I live in a small southern town of 6,000 people and if I suddenly put one on my head, I would be the talk of the town.

  8. I actually prefer your cleaner silhouette to her sort of frumpy one. Although it looks like she's wearing the coveted Rag and Bone Harrow booties, I think you're rockin' it.

    P.S.
    I dig the hat.

  9. I almost bought a cloche hat the other day at Target. Decided against it because really, when would I wear one? They interfere with driving and I only pop in and out of cars and buildings because of my schedule. There's little time spent outside where I'd use it! However, if I lived in a city with public transit again, I would invest in one.

  10. I think you're pulling it off nicely! I just got a wool-felt fedora from Anthro for Christmas and although I probably won't be wearing it on a daily basis, I will be sporting it during a ski trip to Montana! I think they just require the perfect setting/occasion to wear it!

  11. Yes the hat is a little much :P
But I absolutely love your outfit! I think the outfit is cuter than Reese's. I love that the sweater is v-necked so you can see more of the chambray shirt!

  12. I am also not a fan of the floppier hat and the shorter, sweater sleeves over the longer-sleeved, denim shirt. The silouhette gives an unintended "peplum" look that perhaps would go better with cardigan and a shorter brimmed hat.

  13. I have a really similar story featuring this exact same hat! I bought it in October (in the same camel color you have), stared at it for a couple days, then returned it. Fast forward to early December - I was in the store and bought it again (this time in gray)! And I've actually worn it.

I think I struggled with WHEN I would wear it - not when it's cold, which is when I normally wear a hat. I've mostly worn it when it's raining, or slightly chilly. And when I just force myself to wear it... I find myself feeling really cute! So I say give it another couple tries, and if you really can't make it work, then return it.

    Your outfit looks very cute!

  14. I agree 100% with esseitlschool - I think the unintended peplum is what I dislike about this outfit.  I think tucking the chambray would help.  I also think trading the chambray for a different fabric oxford would help.  Celebrity outfits so often do NOT work in real life - which is why I love this blog so much.  Real fashion for real people!

  15. Your outfit looks... sleeker, I guess that is the word I want to use.  I think if you wore a different colored hat, it would all work together but yeah, the brown hat is a bit too floppy and casual for the rest of the outfit.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I definitely like the sleeker look of your outfit, but I agree with the comments below about the long sleeve shirts and under the shorter sleeve - I've never been a fan of that.  Overall, you look great (as usual), but I'd tweek the outfit a bit :)

  17. I would not wear it and I hope you did not step out wearing it like that...maybe hers look "ok" because its loose. maybe if the sweater was a bit baggy it would look more "real-life". It's just I dont know...

  18. I prefer your sleek look rather that Reese's outfit

  19. I'm not cool enough to wear that hat. You're adorable as always!

  20. Your verson of the outfit looks costumey. Someone captured my feelings with the hat. It looks great on you, but it's too much for Florida. It would be great with a wool coat in a colder climate.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think that the outfit totally works, looks better on you than her even! But only if you lose the hat.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Your hat definitely fits better than hers does and it definitely looks better like this than it would with a coat. You're not a spymaster, after all. Any time I see a celeb in a hat, I always have to remind myself that they're probably not wearing it for fashion; more like a stab at anonymity. Maybe next time try one with a smaller, more structured brim (like the grey one in the upper left). You're so tiny!

  23. I'm so scared of any type of hat (unless it's specifically built for winter weather). My head is just too big and I feel silly!

  24. The outfit is great but I would either go without a hat or wear a newsboy/conductor type hat. I think that style would fit the look better. For a totally casual FL look, I think a leather cap would also look great. Just my opinion :)

  25. love the look J! I rarely wear hats like that, but i like the funkyness of it. I would probably just wear a knit beret or slouchy beanie (currently obsessed!)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I LOVE wearing my fedora, but mine is more like #1, not a wide brim like yours. I think the outfit you have one would be better with a slightly smaller hat, and a long sleeve sweater or rolling up the sleeves of the shirt.

  27. I really love hats on other people to and, though I look good in them, I also feel so silly wearing them out!! Like I'm trying to hard to be cool or something though I know that's probably not what others would think haha :)

  28. I love hats but just not on me.  I agree that they are not very practical ...especially in an office setting.  I tend to only wear hats when in the summer months to provide shade.

  29. I love this outfit! The hat looks great on you. I think your outfit is better than the one on the left. Keep the hat, you wear it well.

  30. I think if it wasn't a floppy hat, as though it should be white and worn at the beach with Jackie-O sunglasses, you'd be able to do it! Plus, I think her outfit was more casual and because yours is more fitted the hat looks not dressy enough for the tight pants. Keep the hats coming, I think they look good!

  31. Hi ,
I enjoyed reading your blog with my partner. She love style and read so many fashion related news. I got your link from her. This is an excellent piece of writing.

  32. I love hats, but agree it is hard to wear them out and about.  I also think a less fitted outfit might work better.  Thanks for always trying new things and inspiring me!

  33. I feel silly in hats. I just don't think I'm cool enough to pull it off. I have friends that do, so occasionally I think, oh let's try that again. But I always feel silly.

  34. I think you look adorable and I LOVE your hat.  Reese is one of my most favorites... for everything, but I gotta say I think your outfit takes the cake here! :)  So thrilled to have found you, J, in 2012 and honored to have been a guest post on J's Everyday Fashion.  Best wishes to you in 2013!!

  35. I definitely think that celebrity outfit works in real life. I think the issue is finding a hat that fits your face/body. The newest trend doesn't work for everyone.

I like your hat, but I think, like Rachel said, it should be a stiffer hat like Reese's to flow with the more fitted look of your outfit.

  36. The hat combined with the crossbody bag is giving me an Indiana Jones vibe. The outfit is cute but a different style of hat would have worked better. I don't think you look silly in the hat though but I know what you mean. Sometimes I feel my head is just too big to look good in hats.

  37. I love the outfit, but the hat isn't right. I love wearing hats but I feel weird wearing them outside of summertime. They need more of a comeback!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the hat, I think hats are something you need to get used to.  I think the outfit would have a more pulled together look if the sleeves on the sweater were long.  I think the shorter sleeves draw your eye to that.

I think Reese is adorable, but you look slimmer in your outfit if thats any consolation : )

    ReplyDelete
  39. I want to like fedoras, but I've yet to see one - on a celeb or in "real life" - that doesn't look like it's trying too hard. I just can't. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't think Reese looks that great! The shirt is too long for the sweater, and the rolled pants and short boots work on almost no one (stumpy legs, anyone). The only thing works is the hat. Get a stiffer hat and you'll look great; it just takes getting used to!

  41. I love hats and have several but usually end up feeling super self-conscious 5 mins after leaving the house.

    ReplyDelete
  42. is it just me, or does it look like your black sweater shrunk in the wash? that's whats throwing off the outfit for me.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sweater is navy. And no it didn't shrink, it's just not meant to be worn with a shirt underneath.. :-)

  44. I like to post outfits that work for all climates, not just here in Florida! (this is not a personal style blog)

  45. Lisa, I like to post outfits that work for all climates, not just here in Florida! (this is not a personal style blog) I agree a wool coat would look great.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'd lose the hat it seems a little too floppy  ... but the rest of the outfit is stunning and way cuter  and neater than Reese's.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I am a huge hat person, and love this one on you too! It is somewhat Indiana Jones-esque! It might benefit from being worn a little farther back on the head, though. Love it with the cross-body.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Old Navy has a similar pair of jeans for $22 (MD).  They fit really well, have stretch, and feel soft.  The ones at JCP didn't have as much give, and wasn't as flattering on.  Thanks for inspiring me to get a pair of pants like this; never would have otherwise.

  49. Can you please clarify your last statement ((this is not a personal style blog))? You often show outfits you wear out for errands, parties, events and about your own budget - I feel that's what a personal style blog is! I know you recreate outfits with clothes in your own closet, so I'm just confused :S

    ReplyDelete
  50. i think the outfit is cute on you too, but i'm also not much of a hat person. i always feel silly. but love the look on you!

  53. I don't post all the outfits I wear, and I don't wear all the outfits I post, so I feel like it doesn't technically fall under the "personal style" category!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Your outfit overall is cuter and fits better, more flattering pants. I don't think what you're wearing is a fedora and it looks dumb. A true fedora that fit you better could be cute. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  55. i love everything about this and i'd probably wear it while i was being a tourist somewhere. i've been looking for a hat like that too.  you pull it off nicely!

  56. I like how you pulled it together more than Reese's including the hat! Good job. Great going out with the girls on Saturday after errands.

  58. Funny, I was actually thinking that your hat's much nicer thank's hers. And that you looken really good in yours! I think the outfit works, it is kinda what a lot of people wears to work or uni here in Sweden. Minus the hat...
