Today's Everyday Fashion: On Repeat

Lately I've had the same handful of items on repeat. I can't stop wearing this burgundy cardigan and fringe necklace, my olive military jacket, and the same 3-4 pairs of shoes including the ones in today's post. I think this is largely the reason I feel like I'm in a "style rut" so I've challenged myself to dig deep and find some things I haven't worn in awhile (my closet could use a good deep-cleaning anyway!). What items do you find yourself wearing over and over again?

Cardigan: Banana Republic, $19 (similar, similar)
Shirt: Express, $35
Black jeans: Gap, $35 (similar)
Shoes: c/o Nine West, $62 (similar, similar)
Purse: Karen Millen, $235 (similar, vegan)
Necklace: My Stella & Dot website, $138
Rings: My Stella & Dot website $69 and $39
Bracelets: My Stella & Dot website $59 and $59 and $79 and $19

  1. Loving the dark colors. They're perfect for this weather!

  2. I recently splurged and bought some nice brown leather riding boots. It's really hard not to wear them every day. They are so pretty and comfortable! I also find myself wearing my tan cardigan or tan scarf with just about everything. And I also have 3 pairs of the same black skinny jeans because it's so easy to throw an outfit together with them! I really love your blog. It gives me great ideas and insights into how to shop and what to buy. :-)

  3. Even though you say you repeat outfits, you never actually appear that you do! Love the burgundy cardi....must find!

  4. Leopard print is a great way to jazz up an outfit. I tend to wear my skinny jeans a lot, so I'm on the look for a black pair to change things up a little.

  5. The darker colors are gorgeous! Anything with a pop of leopard is a-ok in my book!

  6. Ooh, I love the pairing of the leopard and wine together.  I think leopard goes with everything!  My olive boots and brown wedge boots seem to be getting a lot wear lately.  When I find myself getting into a fashion rut, I get out my inspiration binder or get on Pinterest to look for ideas.  It gives my wardrobe a breath of fresh air.  Heather

  7. leave them in the dirty laundry pile for two cycles! or in the back of your closet. That's what I did when i once realized i had worn the same blouse twice in one week to work...#shameonme

  8. i have at least 12 pairs of jeans but I mostly rotate three pairs of skinny jeans. I don't when my bootcut jeans will ever see the light of day again.  I also discovered I am not meant to rotate purses. I have a new Tory Burch crossbody bag and that turquiose/blue clutch you have from Ann Taylor. Never use them. I'm too happy with my Kate Spade crossbody bag.

Also, if I could, I would wear this every day: a plain fitted black tee from The Limited. It has the perfect amount of stretch so it looks great. Its a tshirt without being sloppy. The reviews on their website don't lie.

I'm so glad burgundy is "the color" of fall this year.. except I get annoyed when people refer to it as oxblood. Aren't they the same thing? It's finally "the color" of something so we have to give it a new more pretentious sounding name? (/end rant).

  10. I agree with Emily. I have a ton of jeans but have only been wearing about 4 pairs of them because they go best with my tan leather riding boots which I wear almost every day. The other days I wear my leopard flats. And I recently got a pair of coral cords from Old Navy that I have worn wayyy to much but I just love them. The rest of my closet isn't getting a whole lot of love. I think your outfit looks adorable though!

  14. Have you ever done a closet post? I would love a sneak peek into your closet organization. It seems like every female I know has closet "issues" like organizing heels/boots/flats/sandals, or determining what items to fold, hang, store, etc.  You seem to purchase items on a regular basis and I would love to see how you keep everything organized and accessible. Thanks!

I wear my brown boots a ton right now and it's mainly due to the weather.  I try hard to find other shoes to wear some days though!

  17. I get the 'rut' but in a way, I can appreciate it. I like seeing how many variations you can do with similar items. We can't all afford to buy new items all the time :) PS. I love the burgundy color! I want it on everything.

  18. You have such classic pieces that even in your 'rut' you always look put together and cute!

Do you own any high waisted jeans? I think they would look so cute on you!

  22. Cheetah print is such a nice and easy print because I know that I have a hard time wearing prints but because cheetah usually comes in brown, black, and white tones it matches so much and can be worn with a lot of different colors!

  23. I can definitely relate to wearing the same things over and over! Currently I can't seem to stop wearing skinny jeans/pants.. as well as flowy tops and black pumps. This is pretty much what I wear every day to work.. of course rotating between different jeans and tops lol

  24. Definitely a great outfit! Not bad for being in a rut ;)

  30. Coincidentally, I brought up this very subject to a friend today.  I don't know that it's so much of a rut as a result of one of two things: 1. we get so busy that we don't have time to search out new combinations in our closets so we just throw on the same few over and over, each time vowing to change it up "tomorrow!" and/or 2. we wear the same things over and over because we already know they look good on us.  And who doesn't want to walk out the door with that guarantee?

    ReplyDelete
  31. This is SO funny Emily because I was just thinking about "trendy" words today - pop of color, oxblood, amazeballs (<-- totally said that one in a post recently). They get annoying pretty easily.

  32. Your pretty burgundy cardigan............ (like a fine Merlot that makes every meal *better*)............ seems to make every outfit that you wear it with............ *better*, too!!    Just as frequent shopping customers become "regulars" after a while, repeat clothing items become "regulars" (to an individual) after a while, too----and I just love all of your "regulars"!!

Your wearing certain items over and over again............ is one of the (many) reasons why you have almost 50,000 Facebook "Likes" - (49, 606!!) - J. ............ because we  a.l.l.  sometimes get IN That Same Ol' Rut, too, (haha)!!    You genuinely  *u.n.d.e.r.s.t.a.n.d.*  what we, your Readers, GO through, fashion-wise!!

If you do have an opportunity to dig deep and find some things~~in your closet~~that you haven't worn
in awhile, maybe you could style those things you DO FIND............ (i.e., like we all might be able to similarly do!!)............ in somewhat of a "festive" fashion now for Work;  and/or just for regular (work/family/friends) Holiday Parties?    (Not necessarily for New Year's Eve -type parties, though, because they're, as you know, often in a dressier class-by-themselves).    Anyway, that's one~~very tentative~~"'Rut-Releasing' (haha!!) Idea" for you, J.!!

  33. Thanks to today's blog, I know exactly what I'm going to wear to work today! You're amazing, J!! THANK YOU!!! JLK

  34. Hello J,  I was just thinking, I would love an app for my ipad where I could just bring up all your outfits by season as inspiration as I go through my closet!  Thanks for all your hard work and talent!

  35. I am borrowing a friends' leopard dress for a holiday party and want to pair it with a fun/sparkly necklace. Any thoughts on a color scheme? I think I'm gonna pop over to Charming Charlies and see what they have!

  36. Fun! I would stick with black, gold, silver, clear - something neutral. I love a good burgundy combo like shown here too though!

  37. I love the color combinations in this post.  (I've been on the lookout for pants the color of the cardi in this post and a cardi that color, too, ever since I found your blog!)
