Today's Everyday Fashion: Bundled Up

Last weekend I attended a hockey game in Grand Forks and this is what I wore. The navy jacket and black jeans are one of my favorite cool-weather combos (see previous way I wore it, below). I've also had this poncho for going on 5 years, so this cozy look is definitely chock full of favorites of mine. Would you wear a poncho? Which ones do you like below?

Poncho: Gap, old
Navy jacket: LOFT, $50 (identical in black, navy double breasted)
Black jeans: Gap, $35 (similar)
Boots: c/o Chinese Laundry, $150
Purse: Karen Millen, $235 (similar, vegan)
Watch: c/o Daniel Wellington, $199 - use code "Everyday" for 15% off until 11/4
Rings: My Stella & Dot website $39 and $69
Bracelets: My Stella & Dot website $59 and $59 and $59

At the hockey game. Via Instagram.
Same jacket and jeans last year.

  1. I love the way that you layered the jacket over the poncho, making it look like a traditional sweater.  I can do this!  I picked up a poncho on clearance last spring for next to nothing, but haven't work it yet.  Thanks once again for a great inspiration.

  2. Thanks for showing some cold weather looks. I love your blog/style but can't wear a lot of your styles because I live in a colder climate. Just FYI, you've inspired me to start a wish list & monthly clothes budget!

  4. I absolutely could never wear a poncho with my large bust size and broad shoulders; I would look huge!!

  5. I probably wouldn't wear any of the ponchos you listed, but I do really like the one you are wearing because it looks more like a baggy sweater than a poncho.

  6. i have a poncho similar to your first one listed but ive only worn it once...love it but not sure how to style it or even where to wear it...i like how you layered yours under a jacket though. very cute!

  8. I like *yours* but I totally do not like any of the ones you listed. I, too, have a poncho from about 5-6 years ago and still wear it to this day. I don't like any of the current styles in the stores now. They are too baggy and bukly.

  9. I love this outfit! And every time you post an outfit in your black Gap skinny jeans I go and check to see if they've brought them back :)

  10. love your sweater! it's amazing that so many colors that traditionally don't go together are going so well together here! :)

And I'd love to know how you got poncho sleeves under that jacket.

  12. I just found your blog via Pinterest.  I have NO FASHION SENSE so I'm extremely happy to read all your postings.  Your outfits are better than the inspiration pics!  Please keep blogging!!!

  13. I too found your blog via Pinterest. I check it literally every day now. As a young stay-at-home mom with a very limited budget for my own fashion, you've helped me rethink some of the items already in my closet, from when I did have a bigger budget, so that I can make the out-of-style looks new again by styling them in a trendy way. Thank you!!

  14. if you are around an Urban Outfitters, they have a mid rise cigarette jeans in black that I love and look similar to J's! They're around $60, so similar in price to Gap.

  15. Cute combo! If we were sisters, this outfit is what I would steal out of your closet.

  17. I have the same poncho!!! It's lovely and keeps me so warm in the winter months. I beg of you to do more outfits with this poncho!!!

  18. Question:  I love the photo of the poncho with the navy jacket;  the poncho does look like a bulky sweater in that combination.  I'm wondering if it's hard to wear the poncho underneath the jacket.  How did you pull that off?

  19. I'm plus size and I broke down over the summer and bought some black skinny jeans and now I don't know how I lived without them.  I like the outfit from last year with the navy jacket and skinny jeans.  I'm not a big poncho person but if I had to pick a look, it would be the one without the gorgeous navy jacket.  Just my opinion!

  20. I absolutely LOVE that poncho! So cute and comfy looking.

  21. I love this look! Still not sure how to pull off skinny jeans though! any advice?

  22. I'm not a huge fan of ponchos but I'd say Quiksilver has the best one above :)

  25. Oh I love it! I went to college at UND and their hockey is the best! So glad you were able to go to a game. Go Sioux!

  26. Um..I am pretty sure I love EVERYTHING about this outfit! What a classy color palette and the sweater makes me want to bundle up and take a stroll around the city! <3

  27. Try wearing them with a long/loose shirt that covers most of your bum! That's usually how I feel most comfortable in them!

  28. Thanks Tamie! To put on the jacket, I moved the sleeves up and positioned the sweater to the front (almost like a big scarf, takes 2 seconds). I also buttoned my jacket and added gloves for extra warmth!

  29. Thank you so much Katie!! Welcome to the blog! :-)

  30. Thank you so much Katie! Might sound silly but I don't think my fashion sense is all that great, either. If I can do this stuff, then you guys definitely can! :-) Glad you like it!

  31. Love this combination.  Have you ever thought about having readers send you a photo of a clothing item they are having trouble styling and then show us how you would style it?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks CJ! Readers submit photos/links of items on my Facebook page often, and we brainstorm ways to wear it there. Never thought about sharing it on the blog though! Is that something you would like to see?

  33. Cute outfit. Looks very comfy. I would totally wear a poncho. YOu just have to be careful that the poncho fits you right and doesn't end up making you look bigger than you are.

  34. I love this look, (nothing new, if you've styled it!). The biggest issue I have with thicker knits like this poncho, is fitting them under a thinner jacket. I always end up feeling like I have stuffed sausages for arms! Keep styling - my work colleagues think I've been mega shopping recently- it's just my old stuff worn well!! Cheers!

  35. Love that your co-workers think it's new stuff!! Love it when that happens. ;-)

  36. Perfect winter look! Love the different ways you rock those boots!

  37. i absolutely love this look - but can we talk about wearing the poncho under the blazer? do the sleeves bunch up & drive you crazy? i have so many issues wearing 3/4 sleeves under jackets - & especially with the button-down underneath, i feel like i'd be losing my mind!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Chelsea, I totally know what you mean! This poncho doesn't have sleeves at all though  - it's loose all the way around. So it's more like wearing a giant scarf when you put the jacket on!

  39. Love the ensemble.  I am not usually drawn to ponchos. If I were choose one of the options above, I would probably choose the VS one.

J, love this! Something about a big over sized sweater!

  45. LOVE it, I wish I could find the grey one still! I find the ones today are a bit too oversized.

  46. I discovered your blog via Pinterest a few weeks ago and have been using little bits and pieces to inspire my own outfits. Unfortunately, it's so cold in Boston, I have to wait a few more weeks to wear the summery styles. I found this winter gem when I was searching for inspiration today and it's perfect because it's warm AND I have all of the pieces! It was an exciting moment when I came into work and showed two other girls who I work with and love your blog what I was wearing. Maybe I'll do a quick photo shoot at lunch and share it on your FB page. Thanks, J!
