I wore this outfit for air travel last weekend. I like to be comfy while traveling - shoes that are easy to remove, layers to adjust for changing temperatures, and pants that are comfy to sit in for hours. But looking put together? Also hugely important for me, thanks to one awkward encounter many years ago. On that fateful day, I ran into my ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend at the airport and I was wearing a Teletubbies t-shirt. (Um, what?) I'm not sure why I was wearing that anywhere, let alone the airport (?!!), but after that encounter and many others where I either ran into someone I knew or made a business connection at the airport, I realized there is something to be said for looking stylish during air travel. As the saying goes, you never know when you might meet the President. What's your airport style?
Inspiration photo: J.Crew
Navy jacket: LOFT, $50 (identical in black)
Sweater: American Eagle, $20 (similar)
Plaid shirt: Forever 21, $18
Jeans: American Eagle, $25
Love this outfit, especially the shoes. I completely agree with you about looking your best, because you never know who you'll run into... ex-boyfriends and Presidents alike!
ReplyDeleteTeletubbies....you made me laugh!! I'm always amazed at the ladies I see in airports who are completely dressed up. As in high heels, skirts, fur etc. It's really impressive, but I think I will stick to jeans. Maybe someday I'll feel daring...

looks really comfy :)))

Cute outfit, love the combo of the sweater and the blouse! ♥

J, can you show us some navy blazers similar to the one your wearing. I love this style, but I'm in the market for navy. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteCute and comfy!
ReplyDelete[nat in love]
Although it looks adorable and well put together, it looks uncomfortable as heck. Four layers??? It looks sweltering and constricting. More power to you. I couldn't do it without feeling like the little brother from A Christmas Story.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this outfit! This could be my favorite one yet :)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great look. I love your honesty, and you are right- you never ever know when you are going to bump into the President!
ReplyDeleteThere's something about your style and blog that keeps me coming back each day. I truly enjoy your style, and even when browsing over my shoulder, my husband even admitted "That girl knows how to dress, why don't you try to copy her?!" You are a role model for aspiring fashionistas like me. Thank you!

Crap! Looks like I need to step my airport style up a notch...last week I was traveling and wore a Lululemon outfit - so comfy but def not nearly as cute as this!! Hey...it was a long flight!! :p
ReplyDeleteMy airport style isnt' typically very stylish, but I always wear slip-on shoes!
ReplyDeletework-it-blog.blogspot.com
Ha ha--good word play, especially on a day like today! The outfit is super cute as always
ReplyDeleteOMG J! This very same thing happened to me the other day except it was at the Altamonte Mall. Thank goodness I was well put together because I ran into my ex-hub and his girlfriend! Yikes! Of course, I ducked into the nearest store to check myself out in the mirror to see how I looked...hehe.
ReplyDeleteYou look great!! Very comfy and cozy layers :)

I once read a quote that said something like "Dress As if You Will Meet Your Worst Enemy" I thought it was funny, because it never fails when we are not at our best fashion wise, we always run into that old boyfriend, etc. I love gingham so this is a great look! Heather
ReplyDeleteSuper cute fall look and I would definitely wear this to the airport! Gotta stay warm with layers :)
ReplyDeleteYour story makes me laugh. Isn't that the way it always happens? You run into someone you know when you are dressed at your worse!!! I like to dress in layers when I travel, because I inevitably will get cold. I like wearing leggings with a sweater or jeans, a t-shirt and a cardigan. Great outfit.

I'm so glad you weren't wearing a Teletubbies t-shirt LOL!! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for noticing my accidental but well-timed Presidential reference! :-)
ReplyDeleteIf you look hot in yoga gear, no shame in that. :-) On a long flight I'm all about leggings and a blazer. You can be business if you need to, but take it off and add a sweatshirt and you are in pajamas! Here is an example: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/10/todays-everyday-fashion-goodbye-to.html
ReplyDeleteJ, I am DYING to see this Teletubbies t-shirt! Please say you still have it! I think an outfit based around that shirt would be quite entertaining...
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Clare! Your husband is funny! Thanks for sharing! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love that story! (But not as much as I love this look). I was dressed up to go out with the hubby last weekend but had to get some groceries beforehand. He said I was too cute to go to the grocery store... well, I ran into an old boyfriend when I was at the grocery store. So glad I was looking good! Ha!
ReplyDeleteI agree! Sometimes I'm exhausted and being dressed up isn't going to happen. I often go with my glasses on (I wear contacts) and no makeup, and put on makeup in the airport later that day. But even then I'll have jeans and a t-shirt that would be okay to bump into somebody. In other words, no kids t-shirts anymore haha!
ReplyDeleteI agree Jacqueline! Pretty sure I donated it years ago, but if I find it when I clean out my closet this month I'll post it! :-)
ReplyDeleteI do the glasses/contact thing also. Otherwise I get that dreaded contacts-sticking-to-my-eyeball feeling that contact wearers get when they sleep with contacts in. Plus, with all the styles that are out there, you're bound to find a pair that is stylish and unembarrassing :)
ReplyDeleteLove this layered look with the 2 jackets - I need to find a good army green cargo coat...off to check out the options here!

I'm all about comfortable shoes. (I usually wear my Keds, which are easy to slip on and off) And I'm like you in that I'm also all about layers. I tend to get pretty chilly on airplanes, so I always bring some sort of jacket. I don't look as cute as you do though. :-)
ReplyDeleteWell you should be proud to run into anybody in this outfit! Love the layered plaid!

LOL, I love your story! You never know who you're going to run into, especially at the airport. Lots of layers in this outfit, but you do them perfectly.

This helps so much! I've been looking for ways to wear plaid shirts without looking like a lumbar jack! haha

I really should up my airport style. I typically travel for work so it's dress pants, blouse, cardigan/blazer. The shoes are what gets me.. I usually wear sperrys or in the winter, Uggs because they're more supportive than my work shoes (also ugly..). And then an ex boyfriend of mine happened to be waiting at the same gate as me, except for a later flight. Go figure, O'Hare is one of the busiest airports in the country. It was not pleasant.
ReplyDeleteLOVE, LOVE, LOVE this look!! Everything about is just darling!!

I love this whole look. It is so casual yet stylish. The airport needs more stylish people walking around being it is a place to people watch, for sure! Love the boots and jacket!

I absolutely LOVE that look!

i love this look! so cute and still polished! i have almost all these pieces so i know i can recreate :)

This is an awesome Pacific Northwest look! It's all about layering here :)
ReplyDeleteAirfare attire is definitely an art form. I live in Italy, but travel back to the States every three months or so (long story) and as a result, I've certainly perfected the air travel outfit. I usually wear a tank top, tshirt, cardigan and scarf (great for a blanket or a pillow), stretchy pants and flats and pack a pair of socks to use while on the plane. All the clothing ya need for an 8 hour flight!
ReplyDeletewww.whenwewander.blogspot.com
I adore everything about this - ESPECIALLY because I have almost everything I need to recreate it, even while I'm on a 30x30 challenge this month ;) Seriously, girls running around the airport in heels and skirts, take notice - THIS is how you look hot while traveling without also looking like you think you look hot while traveling. Effortless is a good thing. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat outfit. The layers are perfect. What a great way to dress up a plaid!
ReplyDeleteI am old enough to remember when people used to dress up to travel, and I kind of miss those days. You've found a great solution that balances "looks good" with "can survive passing through security and traveling packed knee to jowl with everyone else" :)
ReplyDeleteDo you plan on doing some sort of blog post about cleaning out your closet? I can't remember if I see you doing one before. I'm awful about my closet. I waver somewhere between hoarding everything like it's the end of the world, or getting rid of so much that I only have the last 10 items I purchased left hanging, and end up having "doners remorse" later! Lately I've been hoarding more, but it's getting to the point where my closet is constantly a mess and I can never figure out what I want to wear because it's 80% items I never/rarely wear and I have to sift through that stuff to make an outfit of the 20% I like.... ANYWAY.... Will you have any tips for us? :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I think that is a great idea!! I did a post ages ago but I think it would be great to update it. Thanks for the suggestion!
ReplyDeleteHaha love it Samantha! Very well said!
ReplyDeleteI think ex-boyfriends must just hang out in airports. Mine was on the same flight as I was, so there was no avoiding him!!
ReplyDeleteI've traveled quite a bit on long international flights. Never wear tight jeans! I like to wear layers because the plane can be sweltering hot until they start blasting the air conditioning. Also as one of your other followers mentioned, a scarf can double up as a blanket or pillow. And wear slip on shoes so you can take them on & off easily.
ReplyDeleteWe vacation the Caribbean during the winter but depart from NS in temps that are often below zero. We need to dress quite warmly on this end but then land in swelterirng temps on the other end. Any suggestions for tha type of situation? P.S It's almost worse coming home, we've trudged through snow more than once in nothing but shorts and flip flops because carrying boots and parka's is almost impossible with airlinr restrictions on carry ons!
ReplyDeletePerfect traveling outfit, you nailed it!
ReplyDeletehttp://coffeebeansandbobbypins.blogspot.com/
perfect timing j - I am flying to London tomorrow although it's only just over an hour so not so bad - so true though that you just never know who you might meet! I will endeavour to look my best just in case!
ReplyDelete♥ Thankfifi
J, I have been looking EVERYWHERE for an army style jacket that I love and fits me right and it's so frustrating that I haven't found one yet. But I LOVE yours! Kudos on a great find :)
ReplyDeleteLOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEEE this outfit! So cute, great colors on you too!

Love it! I'm a total creature of comfort when it comes to clothes. I am most comfy in boots and dresses but for traveling, they're not always the most appropriate due to vastly changing temperatures. But this, this is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI tend to wear those velour sweatsuits on a plane- until I recently saw my boyfriend's ex at the airport- now I will be dressing nicer- maybe even wearing makeup!!! LOL-
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how many ex-boyfriend at the airport stories there are! (some other readers said the same, below) I am so glad I'm not the only one.
ReplyDeleteJohanne, living in Florida I'm often in the same situation (dying of heat here, dying of cold when I land). I wrote this old post about how I handle this situation, I hope it helps! http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/02/how-to-dress-for-air-travel.html
ReplyDeleteLOVE this outfit and, as I go through my "Outfit Inspiration" board on Pinterest, I notice that I pin pictures of a lot of layered looks like this. My issue is that I have a large chest and I'm worried that the "sisters" will end up making me look bulky if I put too many layers on. I made an attempt at the button-down shirt under the sweater in Old Navy last week and wasn't loving it (It also could have been a bad combo of sweater style to shirt size) I also have to avoid anything too form-fitting thanks to my post-baby body changes. Do you think this look would still work for me?
ReplyDeletewould you wear these shoes with a colored skinny and if so what color?
ReplyDeleteI would wear them with cobalt blue, mustard, emerald green, and burgundy for sure!
