Today's Everyday Fashion: Boots with Skirts

You may recall that I first styled this dress for summer with white and orange (see here)! The cold-weather version in today's post was my dinner reception outfit in North Dakota this weekend. I tend to feel awkward in boots and a skirt, but this outfit felt pretty good. I've had several people ask about wearing boots and skirt for work, so I took a look back at some old posts for inspiration, below. Several of the skirts are far too short for work, but the general gist of these colors and shapes are what I would recommend. Do you wear boots and skirts together? How do you style them?

Dress: c/o Francesca's Collections, $44
Belt: H&M, $18
Tights: Marshall's
Boots: c/o Chinese Laundry, $150
Purse: Karen Millen, $235 (similar, vegan)
Necklace: My Stella & Dot website charm $17 and c/o Jenny Present (not pictured)
Rings: My Stella & Dot website $39 and $69
Bracelets: My Stella & Dot website $59 and $59

  1. I love wearing boots and skirts together.  Living in Ohio, if you want to be warm and still wear skirts/dresses in the winter, sweater tights and tall boots are the way to go!  Your dress is really cool :)  Heather

  2. Skirts & boots are a winter staple for me. I love to wear dresses & skirts, so when the weather gets chilly, this combo is my go-to.

  3. Boots with Skirts/Dresses totally work! I'm a boot gal (in fact, I'm wearing some cowboy boots courtesy of Country Outfitter) and love wearing tights with dresses and boots. Problem is with the tights, the boots tend to ruin them by pilling them, making it so I have to have two pairs, one for boots and one not for boots.

  4. I actually wore a boots/skirt combination on Monday of this week!  It was a simple, neutral, a-line skirt with my Old Navy boots that look like Steve Madden's Intyces.  I think as long as the skirt isn't too short, skirts and boots are perfect for winter in the office.

I always feel weird when I wear boots+ dress or boots + skirt without tights. But then I see someone else doing it and it looks totally notmal. I am either crazy, or just dont like the look on me I guess. Love all of those though!

  6. I love boots with skirts!  The more streamlined the boot the more professional it looks to my eye.

  7. I'm in a pair of boots and skirt now! It's one of my favorite combinations especially now that it's getting colder.  I've got on black suede-like boots with slightly opaque black tights and a black tulip-esque mini skirt.  On top, a t-shirt with flowers on it from H&M and a grey blazer from Forever21.  I love J's style!

  9. Boots actually make me feel more comfortable wearing a skirt! I started wearing the boot/skirt combo last winter and plan on continuing this year.

  10. I just recently found this blog and I LOVE it! I've spent hours/days looking at all the outfits you put together and I officially am obsessed with your style. So thank you for maintianing this awesome blog!

As for boots and skirts/dresses I wear them to work all the time. There is nothing like a knee high boot and skirt/dress. It is easy and comfortable and effortless to look good in it. My favorite has to be my knee high Steve Madden faux cowboy boot paired with my black H&M dress with 3/4 length sleeves.

  11. I love how you transitioned the dress to cold wetaher. great advice. Perhaps a post on how to match colored rights to your boots/dress/skirt would be helpful?  I have trouble with this sometimes. thank you.

  15. OK you just inspired me to order this dress!  I love wearing boots with tights and skirts/dresses in the wintertime.  It works great with the milder winter weather in Atlanta.

  16. I love boots and skirts. It's really the only way to wear skirts in the Fall, Winter and Spring. Great looks.

  17. I live in the Northwest and boots + skirts/dresses are a staple during this time of year. I love the booties too, but those, IMO have to be paired with tights. And I think it's a great way to use your fun summer dresses by just adding tights, boots, a sweater and scarf!

  18. I like how this dress was styled here than the summer version.  Yes love wearing boots with my skirts.  My post today is a skirt with boots.

  24. I really like 1,4&6.  I think you are right that some of the others would be too short for work.  I wear skirts and boots quite often, living in Chicago.  Almost always with tights or dark nylons.  I haven't done too much with extending summer dress - but thanks for the ideas, as always.

  25. Such great variety!!  Love the first look!!  And of course all of the others too.  I think you nailed every one of these!

  26. Hey J,

I like this combo of dress, tights, and boots!  Could definitely be work appropriate if the dress was a little longer.

I think I remember that during the beginning of the year you said you were going to do some posts on dressing modestly.  Am I making that up? (I can't be sure!)  Are you still thinking you'll address that in the future?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks Katy! Yes!! I would still love to do the modesty post, it's currently sitting in Drafts. I want to include tips for how to make your clothes more modest and asked fellow blogger Sharon to help with that, I need to get back to her. Thanks for the reminder!

Also, dressing for work is totally different than dressing modestly (obviously). In case you are interested, these are my tips for office wear: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/05/todays-everyday-fashion-office-dress.html

  30. Top row, pic#3 that dress with the black sweater, can you tell me who makes it? Love!

  31. Thank you! That sweater is navy (always safe to assume I'm in navy, I never wear black). Picture #3 is from a recent post with Hand In Pocket, details are here: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2012/10/todays-everyday-fashion-hand-in-pocket.html

  32. I should've worded it "I'm horrible at putting together outfits with skirts and boots. I feel awkward because I never do it correctly!!" :-)

  33. Thank you so much for posting this!!! I really like the idea. Here's a question...how many pairs of cognac-colored boots should one own? I want a pair that I can wear with dresses like your above and then with maybe skinnies or tights on the weekends? Is there one pair that suffices both of these needs?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like most all the looks here! I prefer swishy skirts with boots. Tends to keep the trampy look away since Im curvier than you are and that lends balance to the outfit. I hv two pairs incidentally...one heeled and one flat so I hv options.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks Victoria! I think it really depends on your lifestyle/climate and budget, as to how many pairs you need. I am wearing two different boots above (#4 is a flat pair I've had for years). I often wear the heels with pants though, so they certainly work for both dresses and skinnies! You could try two tall pairs - one with a heel, one without. Or get an ankle boot and a knee-high boot? (or all 3? lol)

  38. I think appropriate-ness of boots for work depends really on how professional and nice the boots look.  In my mind, a structured, leather or leather-type boot is definitely work-appropriate, but slouchy type boots might not be as professional.  I have had great luck with Bandolino boots- The ones I bought for this season are here: http://www.zappos.com/bandolino-cazadora-cognac-leather

  41. Thank you so much for these tips.  I've only ever worn boots with full skirts below the knee- where your legs don't show at all.  This will be completely new for me and a great way to show off my beloved boot collection.  Now, may I request a post about booties and a dress?  I keep trying but always wind up giving up and changing clothes.  But when I see people with them on, I just love them!

  42. Thanks for these great outfits J! A question for you, I know "mini skirts" and tights are a new trend for this fall (such as these: http://www.thelimited.com/Tab-Mini-Skirt/7123383,default,pd.html?dwvar_7123383_colorCode=356&start=14&ppid=c14&cgid=skirts)   What are your thoughts on wearing shorter skirts w/ leggings or tights to work? I know it may depend on everyone’s overall office style, but I’m just not sure! Thanks!

  43. This is a beautiful outfit!  I love the colors!  I just wore boots and a skirt (with tights) to church last week.  I'm not sure the outfit completely worked, but I was running late and didn't have time to change, and my husband's comment was, "You look fine, let's go."  Hmm.  But I love the concept!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Great question Marissa! I think tights definitely make a shorter skirt more appropriate overall. I don't think I would go that short for work though. In my collage, I wouldn't wear dress #1 to work without tights, but I would with tights because it's only a tiny bit too short. The skirt in #2 though? I wouldn't wear it to an office unless I worked at a fashion magazine, or in a retail store (or maybe another creative industry I'm not thinking of off the top of my head).

  45. Love your blog!  Is there a site anywhere were you can post outifts and get reviews or tips on making them better?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Fashim has an iPhone app, and Go Try It On is a website for that. Be careful though - people are BRUTAL. And I believe you don't have control over your content on Go Try It On - if you feel someone is being abusive, you have to report the and hope they agree, rather than deleting it yourself.

A nicer route is my Facebook page. No bullies allowed there. lol :-) Good luck!

  47. I would wear almost all of these outfits to work! Love it, J! Can I ask what color your tights are? Navy blue?

  48. Thanks Jamee! My tights are a brown color. Same pair in all 4 pictures. I love navy blue tights though!

  49. These are great looks.  It just goes to show how boots and skirts so work together, and how a great tall boot is worth adding to one's wardrobe.  I totally wear boots and skirts to work.  Where I live, the streets are always wet and mucky in the colder months, so I heavily rely on knee-length shirts and boots during this time.  Here is how I wore my knee length skirt and boots this week at work:  http://coverupchic.blogspot.ca/2012/11/fall-attire-knee-length-skirts.html

  51. I've worn boots with skirts and I tend to like to wear black tights with black boots. It helps make the boots not seem so harsh for work. http://scrapandrun.blogspot.com/search/label/black%20boots shows my black boots  There are a few other work examples that don't have matching tights.   http://scrapandrun.blogspot.com/search/label/brown%20boots with brown I wore pantyhose a lot more than tights.  http://scrapandrun.blogspot.com/2011/02/30-for-30-winter-edition-day-9-february.html and http://scrapandrun.blogspot.com/2011/03/day-21-february-24.html are 2 other examples.

  52. I'm a young high school teacher, so my outfits choices are constantly picked apart by "fashionable" teenage students. Also, because I'm young I am always aware of how professional I dress... don't want to be mistaken for a student in the hallway! Well, now that it's getting colder, I'm wearing boots (sometimes tights too) with sweater dresses and skirts a few times a week. It lets me still be girly with a dress or skirt, but also keeps my legs and feet warm... while keeping a professional appearance.  Also, I don't have to wear boring flats or uncomfortable heels. I get compliments from my teenage girl students all the time and they sure can be judgmental, ha! I love the boots/dress/skirt combo!

  53. I love skirts and I love boots! why not both together? I think it looks very fresh and unique, yet classy. I have a red skirt (from J.Crew) similar to your tan/brown one in these pics and I love yours! where is it from?? i would LOVE to add that into my wardrobe!
