Today's Everyday Fashion: Coattails

Today's outfit: I totally dig it, but it's not my favorite silhouette for my own body type. I do, however, think it's a great solution for an inverted triangle shape (top-heavy), apple shape, or even for an expecting woman to wear to the office! Imagine the same tops worn with a wide-leg trouser and it's too much clothing. Pairing a long and loose top with cropped and tapered trousers, however, will balance out your top half and make you appear thinner, show off your slim legs and overall create a balanced look. What are your favorite silhouettes for your own body type?

  1. I always thought long loose tops and cropped fitted pants made my legs look shorter??

  3. I really like the outfit!  I think you pull it off well - even if you think it isn't suited for your body type!

  4. I love when you wear those types of work pants? Did you get them altered or did you buy them that way?

  5. I'm a definite pear shape.  For a long time, I was a form-fitted on top, wide legs on bottom kind of gal, but when skinny jeans/pants became trendy, I've tried longer/looser tops with my skinny pants to divert attention from my relatively massive thighs.  You look great!

  6. I love this outfit, J!  These pants look great with the longer shirt!!  Your interpretation from the inspiration photo is just amazing!  I also really love the jewelry with that white button down.  I would definitely wear this in a heartbeat!  Do you feel differently about these pants now with the longer shirt paired with them?  I love them so much more with the longer shirt.  Your body type is great for wearing anything by the way.  You should just throw on clothing that you don't think would work for you, because it always looks great when you don't think it is really your style or your fit!  NOt many women can pull that off, so you are very lucky!  xx

  7. Agree with Lex--cropped pants and super long shirt really shortens legs and gives a disproportionate body shape. I say get rid of the grey pants--just really unattractive, even with a long shirt, because the thighs are still too loose and bunchy.

  8. I love this look. I'm curious why you didn't tuck in the white shirt? I like it out but would be interested to see how it looks both ways...or did you try it and not like it?

  9. I love the look and I think I need the striped Express blazer.  What would you pair that with?  My boring brain would put it with a colored cami and black pants but it seems too boring!

  10. Meredith, I am drooling over that jacket myself! I would wear it with a navy or bright yellow shirt, white pants and cognac shoes. Or a red, navy or black dress. Or a light blue collared shirt and jeans!

  11. SK, this is mostly why I didn't tuck it in (these pants have a funny dropped crotch): http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2012/01/todays-everyday-fashion-tricky-trousers.html I also wanted to show a different silhouette than I usually do!

  12. Pip, you are too kind. :-) I am a huge, huge fan of these pants when worn with a shirt that is long enough to cover the top part of them. I wish they fit better up top but methinks this is why I got such a good deal on them lol!

  13. Nicole, I bought the pants as is! :-) The top fit me really funny so I tried to have that part altered but it just made them look worse, so I can only wear them with a long enough shirt to cover the top part, Still love 'em though!

  15. I also just *love* this particular Outfit Silhouette on you, too, J.!!    With your being so slender............ long, loose, (but not exaggeratedly-loose!), *fluid*shirts/blouses/tops~~OR~~*flowy*, sheer or semi-sheer shirts/blouses/tops............ look simply *wonderful* on you............ (particularly from the side)!!

A fluid or flowy outfit-TOP Silhouette, with a more-fitted outfit-BOTTOM Silhouette............ (e.g., as you're wearing in the Above "long-over-lean" photo)............ really elongates your line;  and makes you appear to be............ even MORE *slender and graceful* (than you already ARE)!!

As another variation of this look, I wonder how a long and loose (again unbelted) top............ (plus "flowy" jewelry and "flowy" hair, too!)............ OVER a very fitted and very tailored skirt............ with strappy, very structured heels............ would look on your body type?!    (Probably stunning, as usual, J.!!)

  16.  I'm also decidedly pear-shaped. Skinny jeans and long cardis are my usual look, but I'm trying to move toward a more feminine wardrobe.

My spring shopping will include some full, flared skirts/dresses. Pencil skirts are awkward on me -- my butt and thighs are so full that I end up with a weird taper to the knee, instead of the flattering straight lines slimmer women get.

  17. I love the way you balanced the wider top with the more narrow pant. What a neat pant length. that might be a good idea for me to try in the summer!

  18. This is a really cute outfit. I work in a business casual office and this is a perfect mix of the two. Your necklace reminds me a lot of the one I have from J.Crew I just recently posted about. <3

  19. I realize I'm late to this party, but I just wanted to say that I think your take on the outfit is much cuter than the inspiration photo! Love it. I'm hourglass shaped (with a tendency towards pear-ish-ness), so by the time a blouse fits loosely enough around the hips, it's usually too big through the shoulders and chest. Oh, well.
