Today's Everyday Fashion: Out of Season

I have a slight obsession with the color emerald right now, so when I spotted this dress at Nordstrom Rack last week it was speaking to me from across the room. I didn't even try it on, I just went for it. I did have one hesitation though - it seemed more like a summer/spring dress, and I usually try to not buy things too out of season unless I can make use of them now. (It can be a great money saving strategy, but I've been burned in the past.) That's when I remembered that my new boots were in the mail (you will be seeing these a lot!) and would look super-cute. Problem solved, and this type of dressing is perfect for the weather we are having right now. What's your rule of thumb when buying items out of season?

  1. I once found a fabulous Ralph Lauren sweater on the clearance rack in the dead of summer but it was super clearance for $4!  I couldn't pass it up.  My rule of thumb for buying out of season is usually price and if I can utilize it at least for 2 or 3 seasons.  Love this green dress you purchased.  I love how you styled it now and I can see it for summer with cute wedges and white accents!

  2. I love the dress and love how you styled it!  Emerald is actually very in style this season, so wear it, wear it, wear it!  It will be great for spring/summer as well, but for winter it is great too!

  3. I love the dress!  And paired with the boots, perfect for this time of year!  I try not to  buy things to out of season. Because Minnesota gets cold and I need lots of warm layers!

  4. Buying out of season is great because the price points are usually more forgiving :)
I live in Chicago, and I still wear some summer dresses late in the year.  I just add leggings/stockings, boots, a cardigan and I'm weather-appropriate!

Unrelated question, but do you use any wardrobe management software?  Thinking of downloading an app to help me.  I dont have a lot of clothes, but I keep wearing the same things...I'm hoping it will help me wear more of my clothes.

  5. Because of where I live, which I'm sure is the same for you, it's ok to buy out of season because the weather is a bit out of season. I just try my hardest to make it look "in", ya know?

  6. That is adorable! My best friend lives in FL and gets to wear cute stuff like this year round...I'm in SLC, Utah so my winter attire is much much different! And your post made me realize something...I never buy out of season stuff. I think I'm too trendy and I just go with what's in currently. So lame, I know!

  7. I live in South Dakota where winter is 9 months long, or so it feels. So if I buy something out of season, I usually try to stick to a classic piece or something I really love that won't be out of style by the time it comes back in season. I absolutely love today's outfit and want to steal that dress! I came upon your blog a few weeks ago and it has really helped me revamp my wardrobe! Thanks!

  8. Katy, this belt is one of my favorite pieces in my closet! It was a splurge about 3 years ago and I can't live without it.

  9. Adora, no, I've never used any kind of software. Would love to hear your experiences if you do. I have heard of turning the hangers in your closet backwards on what you've already worn though, and keeping track that way!

  12. Love love love your boots!  Are they comfortable? I was looking at them in tan, but didn't like them because the color was too light, but they look the perfect color in your pics.  Thank you so much for all the fashion advice!

  14. Love the dress! I'm all for wearing summer dresses with a fitted black long sleeve tee and tights/boots underneath in the winter- it's perfect for our weird weather here in NC too! Today I'm wearing my Christmas fair isle sweater to work with capris bc it's just too hot!

  15. I just found your blog and I really love it! I am trying to dress better and I'm learning a lot from your website. I have a question though. I see you wear a lot of heels and I love the way it looks. I walk around a lot in my job but I still would love to wear heels with my jeans, pants, and skirts but I always have a problem with discomfort. Do you ever have problems with that? How do you shop for your heeled shoes and what brands have you found are the easiest to break in?

  16. Hi J! Quick question, can you wear those boots with jeans, or are they too tight? Can't find measurements on their website...Thank you!

  17. My rule of thumb for buying things off season is that A. they're more of a classic piece and I know they won't be out of style when that season rolls back around and/or B. I can weatherize them for the current season like you did here. I actually buy things out of season a lot because this is one good way to catch good sales but I don't do this so much with real fly by night trendy items.
