Today's Everyday Fashion: The Neon Sweater

I'm flying back to Orlando today! I recently got this neon sweater on clearance at Gap and was planning to wear the outfit on the left on the plane. The outfit on the right is another way I styled it that would work for plane travel in colder weather. I, however, totally forgot to pack the belt in the photo (remember I said I'm bad at packing?), and my feet are killing me from my bridesmaid shoes so I'm going to have to improvise a new travel outfit. :-) I like to plan my outfits out for trips head-to-toe (saves room on any unnecessary items), but this trip has turned into one improvised outfit after another. When you pack clothes do you pack outfits, or pieces and improvise as you go?

  1. I totally pack outfits when I pack, otherwise I'm caught unprepared. But I also tend to be lazy with fashion on vacation. I never wear makeup or do anything to my hair either. I try to make it a vacation for my face and hair too! I love the sweater with the denim shirt - daring choice but it looks awesome. Not sure if I can pull off a denim shirt!

  3. Outfits! If I'm driving, I even hang jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, etc.) and accessories over the hanger so it is literally all in one place!

  4. I like the green with the chambray on underneath it.  I have a green sweater similar to that (it's from the Gap, too) and may try it out.  I definitely plan outfits head-to-toe.  It's easy for trips where I have a pretty full dance card, like when I come back to Kansas City for Thanksgiving.  I have a full outfit planned for every activity I'm doing while I'm there.

  5. These are both such great looks, J! Love this neon sweater. I love the pop of red shoes in the first one, and the layering with the chambray shirt in the second. When I travel, I used to pack pieces so that I could have options depending on my mood, but I found that it took up too much space, and I would end up not wearing half of what I packed. Now, I try to plan outfits.

  9. Great sweater!  I love bright colors.  I usually strive to pack outfits, so I know I'll have exactly what I need.  But I've also just thrown a bunch of stuff into a suitcase.  It's not ideal but usually not catastrophic either :)

  10. What a great sweater! Both ways you styled it are great. The pink shoes in the first photo are such a great pop of color!  .

  13. Pieces to improvise. That way you are not left disappointed! I travel on a monthly basis too so it would be impossible to plan that often and would take too much time. I have go-to basics and add in cute tops for going out.

  15. Thank you! I'm going to wait until the professional pictures come back to post a picture of the bridesmaid dresses! :-) Should be a few weeks at least.

  16. I'm not really into neon- but you pull it off so well that it might have convinced me to give it a try! I actually love the look on the right! The combo of the chambray with the neon is fabulous and looks perfectly casual but put together!

  17. Janell, I agree! Packing by pieces usually means you have a bunch of pieces you never wind up using/wasted space. I packed a carry-on for this trip so partly why I tried to create outfits.

  20. I like the neon with the red best! If I need to conserve space I do outfits, otherwise it is all improvising.

  21. I absolutely pack outfits- I'm a total packing nerd.  I use a spreadsheet to plan outfits for each day I'll be gone along with alternatives for days with day and night events.  I don't go so far as to only wear the outfit on the day I planned it, but using this method helps me not over nor under pack (and I print the list and cross items off as they go into my suitcase).  It also eases the stress of getting everything ready for trips.
