Today's Everyday Fashion: The "It" Dress

Ladies, meet my new favorite dress. There are three areas in which I score a dress - fit, color and wearability. This dress scores a perfect 30 for me! Fit gets a 10 out of 10. The pleating and slight ruching is amazing and gives the illusion of curves while also covering up any lumps and bumps. Color also gets a 10 because this is a favorite color of mine and it works well with my skin tone. And finally, wearability - while most dresses are only for day OR night, this dress gets a 10 because it is equally at home for a wedding, a dinner date, a girls night out, a networking event (where I wore it on Wednesday night), a daytime event and even church. A crazy amount of places you could wear this dress - and trust me, you will see me wearing it again at some point! Good clothes are too good to let them just sit in your closet after all. :-)

Tell me - based on what characteristics do you score your dresses/clothes? Do you have a dress in your closet that seems to fit many different occasions?

Occasion: Women's networking event
Dress: C. Luce c/o McAuley's
Belt: Limited, $15

Purse: Juicy Couture via Macy's

  1. This is a really nice dress - looks great from behind too. And it's a great color! I really like the ruching trend  but tend to stick with tops and bottoms as dresses look strange on me (short torso, long legs) and dresses never seem to fit right.

  2. Just found your blog and wanted to say I love it! I love fashion blogs but it's nice to see one where the blogger looks great in normal everyday clothes, not $900 YSL heels! And I love your use of color!

  3. That dress looks FABULOUS on you! Of course, I don't need to tell you that.

I love dresses and would wear them every day of the week if I could. Surprisingly, the dresses I get the most compliments on are from Target! I love Loft's selection of dresses as well. I'm picky about the style  so I usually stick with a mid-length dress with a V-neck. I avoid wrap dresses and strapless - I don't think they work well with my short waist!

  4. Wow, love it! And, what an interesting necklace. I thought it was 2 different ones at first. That color does look awesome on you with your nice tan :)

  5. Very nice! I like the dress on you, but I personally would never buy it. Why? I have some sort of weird adversion to dresses with a V-"back" -- I just *can't* do it for some reason. And I don't have a good reason why, lol :)

Also, is the necklace from JCP's recent? Because I've been looking for one just like it to replace a BR one I used to have from a few years back.

Thank you MIssy! The necklace is about 6 months old, so would probably be hard to find. I recently saw the exact same necklace in pink at Francesca's though, so it's possible they would also have it in green!

  8. Lovesit! This swimming pool blue seems to be the "latest" in new favorite dresses, as I recently bought a dress in about that color, too ;-) http://relatablestyle.blogspot.com/2011/05/my-new-treasure.html

  12. Love the dress. Such a great color! I have a few dresses that I feel can take me from day to night, and I find myself wearing them over and over again!

  13. Oh I love the color and pleating details!  Very pretty.

Hmm... my scoring is based on silhouette, wearability as you described it, and um... how well it camouflages dog hair.  Sad but true.  Black items in my closet never see the light of day.  Those little white hairs stick no matter how much lint rolling I do!  Whites or patterns are much better for me.

  14. Love the shoes and the color of the dress on you! Okay, so The Limited is having a 40% off sale and I've been coveting this necklace: http://www.thelimited.com/detail/triple-strand-locket-necklace/1485042. Now to decide whether to get silver or gold. What's your take on it?

  15. I adore the color of this dress. I need to start ranking clothes before I buy them! Maybe I'll save some money that way and not buy more than I need.

  16. Your "scoring" system is a good idea. I, too, base my purchases with versatile-ness in mind! I don't mind shelling out a few extra dollars, if I know I can wear it more than once.

Being kinda dorky- I also think about price-per-wear. The more I wear it, the more I can justify buying it as the "price" would go down!

     This is a great purchase!

Anna, thank you! The link to the necklace isn't working so feel free to post it again. I think it really depends on what "color" necklace you'd like to add to your collection. If you have all gold, then maybe you could add some silver and vice versa?

Lindsey, I think those are great strategies!

  19. I have one dress that I've worn for a baby shower, a funeral, to work and a night out. AND I got it at Plato's Closet where it was about $8. Dresses like that are magical. You look fantastic in this one!

    Lovely!
I usually decide what to buy based on fit & color. Of course now that I've been following your blog, I've also begun to factor in what other things I can pair the item with.

  22. its a cute dress! i looked at the website. They have super cute designs! But I see that most of their dresses are made of polyester materials but the price for them don't seem to reflect that quality of material.

Thanks Janell! The dress sold out this morning. If the store stocks more of them I will let you guys know!

Thanks Patricia! I can vouch for this dress - it is absolutely worth $100. I don't recall what kind of fabric it is exactly, but the construction and quality of the material are very good. Not all polyester is created equal!

  25. I score based on color, cut/fit, and versatility!  I think that if I'm going to be buying a dress, especially if I'm splurging, I need it to be multi-functional.  A hot pink dress, although super cute, may not be the most functional thing for me, but a simple black dress can always be dressed up or down!

  26. I read somewhere (Glamour maybe?) that before you buy anything, you should be able to think of three different items you already own that you could pair it with and three different places you could wear it. I run through this checklist every time I buy something. I have also done the cost-per-wear thing to justify pricier items too!

The dress is gorgeous and very flattering on you. You could wear it anywhere!

  27. Target has a dress very similar to this in Coral... I love this turquoise one too! I can see why it's your new favorite ;o)

  28. I love this dress first of all and it would get a perfect 30 for me as well. I especially love the lush turquoise style and all the beautiful, pleated work. I know when something is 'my style' because when I enter at the store it's like that item or items are calling my name. Also I know that's the case when I keep looking at them, going by them, want to try them on and even pair them with other things and I also think of things in my closet I want to wear with those items. This happens to me a lot at stores like The Limited, Loft, Express and White House Black Market, that's why these stores make up at least 60% of my closet. =)

Can't wait to see other ways you wear this dress from many other occasions. BTW, did you score this dress for free and how did you do so? LUCKY!

  30. It's my natural skin color! This was July so I definitely had a bit of a tan, but overall my skin is naturally very olive.
