4 Ways to Wear a Statement Necklace

Accessories are a great and inexpensive way to change up an outfit, and nothing has a more dramatic effect than a statement necklace. They first appeared in retail stores a few years ago, but their continued popularity is proof that they are here to stay! Not sure how to wear them? Here are four ideas for styling statement necklaces with what you already own.

1. With an open neckline. Open necklines such as v-necks are very flattering to many body types, but what should you do with all that empty space? Fill it up with some gorgeous jewelry, of course! A statement necklace adds texture, detail and even color to an open-neck look.

2. Over a collared shirt.  Do you feel boring in your collared shirts at work? Add a statement necklace around the outside of the collar to spice up your base and add sparkle and texture. You can think of it as a gorgeous necktie for girls!

3. With a high neckline. High necklines like turtlenecks and bateaus make great foundations for a statement necklace. Layer one over your shirt or dress to create a fun color combo and make your necklace really pop.

4. With embellishments. It may seem like too much at first, but statement necklaces actually look great paired with other embellishments like ruffled collars or sequin tops. Give it a try today!

  1. Great tips J!  I usually don't wear a necklace with an embellished neckline, but after seeing your picks, I can't get over how fab it looks!  I also don't wear a big necklace over a button-up collared shirt.  If I do, I wear it UNDER the collar, and your really can't see it.  I will DEFINITELY be rocking the 'gorgeous necktie for girls' look!

    human body.

  9. Great post! Any suggestions for layering necklaces? You know lighter weight chains with charms or pendants.

  10. Thank you Patti! Like with most things in fashion, it's tough to give "rules" since it's all so subjective. I love layering pendants though - and think it's really about trying it on and seeing if you like it. I've layered 2 pendants that are very far apart (one short, one long) but also 2 pendants that were almost laying right on top of each other. I think there is no wrong way of doing it so don't be afraid to try! :-)

  11. Everything looks great except the last one... sorry. Embellished necklines are best with earrings or bold bracelets in my opinion.

  12. Kennedy, fashion could not be more subjective so the only fashion rule I believe in is that there are NO rules! I think what you might be describing are fashion "preferences" where we make rules for ourselves, but there's no reason the rest of us can't wear it if we like it that way! :-)

  13. This was a really timely post. I bought a necklace and just loved it but didn't know what to wear it with...this happens often because I don't have the gift of putting things together (I'm getting there thanks to your blog). I ended up wearing it with a cute black dress with an open neckline to let it stand out. I'm going to try it with a collared shirt next to see which I like better. Thanks for the examples!

  18. Hi J.  I've been following your blog for a couple months now and love all of your ideas.  I have a question - I notice sometimes you layer a couple of different necklaces.  Any tips for knowing when this works and when it doesn't?  I can't seem to get it right but I'm always trying!

  19. Thank you Leah, so glad you like the blog! I've been considering doing a post on layering necklaces. I usually just try until I find something that works but if I come up with some "rules" that can be passed along I will definitely post them! Just keep trying though, that's my best tip. :-)

  23. I love this post!  So helpful.  I always follow your tip #1 and #2 but I have never thought about #4.  I have a ruffled cardigan that I now can't wait to try with one of my statement necklaces.  In response to layering necklaces, I have a tip to pass along.  As a style advisor with Guy & Eva I offer style advice and tips on how to best style your jewelry.  One of the tips we share is that when layering pendants keep them separated by about 1.5 inches.  And when you wear a chunkier necklace or one that really stands out keep the biggest chains hanging the lowest.  Think of gradual layering to keep your necklaces looking put together but not "busy."

  24. necklaces are so pretty, but how do you wear them with earrings without looking too matchy-matchy or mismatched?  or do you go without earrings when wearing a statement necklace?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Carolyn, I don't usually wear earrings when I have on a necklace, and especially a statement necklace. It can be done though, and like with all things fashion I'm a big believer in trail and error and personal preference! :-)

  26. i just want to say that i wore a necklace for the first time in about 15 years because of you, and i felt so pretty and feminine all day :).  AND the necklace was from old navy for $10!  win win!
