Today's Everyday Fashion: Function vs. Fashion

Sometimes comfort wins. I had a super-cute outfit planned for Saturday night out in Austin. But after a 3-hour speaking engagement, a 3-hour shopping event and being on my feet all day... I just didn't have the energy left to wear the heels and cute skirt I had planned to wear. :-( Thankfully, nightlife in Austin is super-casual and my friends assured me I would be fine in this look, which is usually something I would wear for the mall or running errands NOT for a night out. I would have loved to have worn the other outfit, but like I said sometimes you just have to go with what's practical vs. what's fashionable. Tell me - have you ever been in this type of situation? Did you choose function or fashion?

  1. I don't think functional/practical and fashionable are mutually exclusive. I think this outfit is very fashionable, as well as functional. I wore a similar outfit out to dinner Saturday night (my top was gray with a ruffle down the front). I threw a black leather jacket over it because it was a little chilly. I got a lot of compliments.

  3. I'm loving the arm full of bracelets and watch.. one of my favorite ways to accessorize!

I am pretty much in a similar situation 5 days a week. I'm an office manager at a construction company so my office is beyond casual. I'm talking sneakers, dirty jeans, and t-shirts. Being the only girl there I tend to be overdressed. I often want to wear a cute dress or skirt with my high heels, but I tend to favor the dark jeans and flats for work. :(

@d695e07a6f7aabc350e57edc3501304c:disqus I totally agree! Sometimes you can be fashionable AND comfy. But in this instance I was away from my closet and had to make a choice whether I wanted to be one or the other. I didn't feel fashionable in this for a night out, but I decided that being comfy at that point was more important!! I guess I'm more talking about those situations - where you really WANT to wear something, but at the moment it's just not comfy enough and you have to choose something else that's not as cute.

  9. J you look fashionable to me. I don't think heels are a requirement to be fashionable. Love the white jeans (gotta get me a pair)!

It's style #9055 - Galaxy blouse in silk crepe, but I don't see how you can purchase it online. If you go to "Outlets" you can look up what boutiques carry them in your country and state.

  14. I love this outfit - the rose with the bright white jeans is fabulous and perfect for a night out. I have a toddler so comfort always wins. However comfort can still be stylish as you've perfectly demonstrated here. :)

  17. I have many days where I chose function over fashion. Especially when it comes to heels...as much as I LOVE them...I rather be comfortable.
I love this look on you :)

  20. Hi J- Been following your blog for some time. I am old enough to be your mom (grandmother???), but I love to see what you are wearing, and how I might style my outfits to be current, without looking juvenile (or silly!). Your color combinations were what caught my eye at first. You do have a good eye for creating an original look from the inspiration of others. Keep up the creativity! Ditto: rear views are helpful.

  22. Totally understand wanting to be comfortable! If I'm exhausted and had a long day like you, I would go with the comfortable choice! But you look so fresh in your white jeans and I love your top!

  23. That's dressed up for Austin! Did you feel like you fit in?

    ReplyDelete
  24. @9c979eba5ec9cf6db38f6f9ee71fb0a0 No, I still felt under-dressed. :-( I never wear flats even in the daytime so it was weird being out at night in flats. I didn't let it ruin my night though, had an awesome time on both ends of 6th street. :-)

  27. DId you get these jeans at Gap recently? I'm in search of white cropped jeans and the search is harder then I thought.

  28. @c22bc3e8b4a7407af0067be3cefcadf1 I've had these jeans for a couple years now, did you try looking at the Gap though? They usually have some that are similar.
