Today's Everyday Fashion: Orange Olivia

I looove Olivia Palermo's style so when I saw this photo on FabSugar, I know I had to re-create it! I don't have an orange blazer, so I switched things around and wore an orange shirt and brown cardigan. (Note: hard to tell from the photo, but my pants are also plaid.)

Why this works: One way to experiment with color is to stick to colors that are all from the same "family." This combo works because all of the colors in the outfit are similar shades of brown/orange/yellow, which live on the same side of the color wheel!

Occasion: Work
Photo left: FabSugar.com
Cardigan: Banana Republic, $30
Shirt: Limited, $30
Pants: Banana Republic outlet
Belt: Limited, $15
Shoes: Bandolino/TJ Maxx, $25
Watch: Michael Kors, Christmas present
Earrings: Banana Republic, $20

  5. ooooo, I LOVE this combo. I had never thought about putting orange and yellow together, but it really works when there is a little distance, and a good neutral between them.

My one thought is that the ruffles on the cardigan and the twist detail on the shirt compete a little bit, so in an ideal world, it would be nice to have one of them be a little simpler.

    Awesome look though.

  10. I love her style too! I like the idea of the orange under brown, it's really flattering and slimming (not that you need it, you're tiny!) because the first thing you see is that bright spot of color. A blood red nail polish would be a great accent also :-)

  12. J!! is that BR cardi new? I saw a video of someone wearing a similar one like this, but it was by JCrew (which isn't available here). I've been looking for one of these for ages! eee. Love how it's paired with that peachy orange. Pop-tastic.

  13. Thanks Nancy! I've had the cardi for 2-3 years, but JCrew and Banana always seem to stock similar ones so I would look there!

  15. I absolutely LOVE how you made Olivia's outfit your own! And I also love how your shoes are a different shade than the shirt, so it's not too matchy-matchy. Double thumbs up! :)

  19. Thank you! I've had the orange shirt for about a year and a half. Limited re-made this shirt recently, (maybe 6 months ago?) but in teal, black and silver.

This looks really sophisticated!! Unexpected color combination, but it looks amazing!

  23. I kind of love your look more than Olivia's- hers is sophisticated and trendy and all, but yours is wearable and incredibly chic. You look like a style magazine editor. I love the statement that a non-traditional color pairing can make.

  24. one of my favourite colour combo! also, i kinda think the ruffles on the cardi and the top are competing with each other, but i still adore this look!

99% of the time I like YOUR outfit better than the original. Also the text you include is really helpful, I can see how you think and put items together, love how you explain why things work or why they don't!
Thanks for the effort you put into your posts J, much appreciated!

  35. well done. i would have never thought about pairing the yellow with the orange, but it works. i appreciate the use of the orange shirt instead of orange jacket. the jacket is too much for me.
