Today's Everyday Fashion: The High-Low Skirt

Ladies, what do we think of this trend - the high-low skirt - is it still in style? I throw a couple items in the donate/sell pile every couple of months and I've been considering adding this skirt to that pile. I love the color and length, and overall I think this is a fun trend. I'm just not convinced this particular skirt works well on my body type, and I don't wear it often. Would you wear a high-low skirt?

  1. I've never been a fan of that skirt style, but I love the one you have on so much I would keep it and bring it to a tailor and have it cut down to the short length!

  2. I think it is adorable and looks great on you! I've been hunting for one myself. I think it works well with the white belt!

  3. I have a question. You buy new things every season, do you have some sort of rotation system going on? I can only imagine the amount of clothes you would accumulate if not? and especially if a lot of them are out of style (from a few seasons ago)

  7. Love love love high-lo skirts and dresses! Just bought one from a second-hand shop for less than 7 bucks! Love this outfit!! =)

  8. I have a hi-lo little black dress that I love! But in the skirt it looks a little bit frumpy. You look cool - but there are so many cuter options that I've never been tempted to try this trend :-D

  9. For some reason I just don't love this trend. I have 1 skirt that is mustard colored, but it is a stretch for me to wear it. I am also not a fan of the high-low shirts...

  10. You look gorge, but it's not for me I've tried many but they don't really seem to fit.

  11. I'm often not a fan of hi-low skirts, but this one is less exaggerated than some, and you look great in it. This is one of my favorite spring outfits so far, the top pairs with the skirt really well. I say keep it around for now.

  12. I agree that the color is great and the belt is awesome with this skirt. I cannot get into this trend, though. It just makes me feel like I should be going to a school dance. Listening to backstreet boys.

  13. Have you thought of having the back of the skirt tailored to be all the same length? It's a great color...at any rate, to answer your question, not sure how I feel about the hi-lo skirt, but I don't own any, so that might answer my question :)

  14. That one I would because it is not too low in the front! the look is very crisp!

  15. I've tried the mullet skirts too. They just don't look right on me. I always take them back. :/

  16. I don't have any hi-lo skirts and probably won't buy any but it looks really good on you. I think its a nice change up from the usual pencil skirts that you typically wear. And, come on- your body type can wear anything ;)

  18. what I like about your skirt is that it's only a few inches different between the front and the back. Forever 21 carries high-low skirts that are practically micro minnies in the front and then come clear to the floor in the back. I like your more subtle version!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have not jumped on board with the trend because I find that most of the hi-low skirts are a little exaggerated, but yours is very subtle. Keep it, at least for another year. :)

  20. I think your outfit looks really pretty - soft and light for spring - I'd hang onto the skirt if I were you!

I like the high-low trend but can't seem to pull off the longer skirts because I'm really short! I just made a high-low dress out of a thrift store skirt! (Here: http://sweetsomedaylove.blogspot.com/2013/03/skirt-to-dress-refashion.html) It's not perfect, but an inexpensive and fun way to jump into the trend!

  23. For taller people like my mom and me, 6' and 6'2", the high low skirt is WONDERFUL! Skirt and dress hems are always hitting the weirdest part of our legs (we both have a 38" inseem), so the high/low style makes it work!

  24. Love this skirt on you. I'm not a big fan of the mullet skirt but it looks great on you.

  25. I think this looks great on you! I'm not a huge fan of the look overall, and it doesn't suit my location, body type or lifestyle, but for someone who is tall, slim and lives in a beachy environ....I think it's really cute. This outfit is adorable on you. I love the colours and the fit.

  26. Megan, there is a link to a video of my closet in the right column of the blog if you want to see how much stuff I have! :-) I tend to get rid of a stack every year, things that are either worn out beyond repair, don't fit me, or I bought a replacement (aka I bought a new chambray shirt to replace one I didn't like as much). I tend to keep a lot of "out of style" items because they usually come back into style. This skirt has never been worn much though so I feel silly keeping it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have that same skirt and almost wore it today! I can't decide if it's still fun or too last spring! Either way, it looks great on you!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I LOVE the high-low trend, I think it's so feminine and beachy, which I love. It's funny you posted a high-low skirt because, I'm wearing a high-low dress in my post today and it's my favorite wardrobe item! I love your pink one, it looks great on you.. definitely a keeper!

  29. I think some girls can really make the high-low skirt look really good but, being as short as I am, I'm just not one of those people; they weren't meant for my my body/body type!! Shame because I think some of them are really cute :/

  32. I'm old. Old enough to be your mother. In fact, my daughter is about your age, but even though I can't or wouldn't wear most of the styles you show, I still enjoy your blog for the interesting color combo ideas I get from you. Absolutely love the colors of this top and skirt together but the hi-low skirt trend...no, no, no! Personally, I don't think this style skirt looks good on anybody. I predict this is one of those styles that people are going to look back on and say, "OMG, what the heck was I thinking wearing that?! It looks hideous!" (You know how people snicker when they see pictures of people with mullet hairstyles? Same principle here.) I vote to keep the skirt but have it hemmed so it's all one (more flattering) length.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think you pull this trend off really well. The key is that the difference in your high/low hem is not too great. I was at Forever 21 on Friday and almost every single skirt/dress was this style, but super short in front and super long in back! Definitely not wearable enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I personally like the high low skirt. I am also short but I like it because you can still show off your legs in front and it doesn't make you look stumpy like a maxi would. I definitely think it's still in style. I was on the forever 21 website and they had tons and also while shopping at the mall I saw quite a few. I think though that they won't stick around for long.

  36. I think it looks very nice on you!! Actually, whenever I see this trend, I liked it... except when I'm on the dressing room, wearing it... I've even think that I need to try it with full heels, hair and makeup, so I can get a better "picture"... but I haven't done it yet!
So.... I love how the high/low looks on everybody but me!

PS. The skirt color is gorg! If you're not sure about it, maybe you should get it tailored as HeidiG said! =)

  37. I think it looks really great on you. Usually these skirts are too high in the front for me to consider wearing and they seem a little to bohemian for my style too, but they're really cute when worn well!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm not a high-low girl. I think they look awkward, and my husband calls them mullet dresses (and does not approve). I really do love the color though!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love this trend and think it looks great on you! I think the sheer skirts with the short slips are hard to wear depending on your body type but even with heels, you wore it very well!

Hope you had a wonderful Easter! He is Risen!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think its just a fad that will last the summer and wont return. I would just hem up the skirt so it all falls at an even length once you are over hi-lo. Its such a shame to throw out such a pretty colored skirt that has so much promise!! :)

  41. I have one of these in black and it isn't chiffon at all, it is more solid and one color. I love wearing it with a floral top and a slouchy cardigan; it makes a cute outfit. It's also one of those outfits where you don't think it would work but all the pieces do! So maybe try pairing it with a different top or add a cardigan to it? I think you'd be surprised!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm not a fan of the hi-lo skirt...or any dramatic trend for that matter. It looks great on you though, and the color is great! Maybe you can get it tailored into a skirt that hits just above the knee?

  43. I haven't been able to find one that hits my legs at a flattering length, the high part tends to hit me too high on the the thigh. If I could find one that brushed my knees like yours does, I would buy one.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I was going to suggest tailoring as well. It shouldn't be any more expensive than just hemming it, and it looks like there is only one layer to do (the lining appears to be short all the way around.) If you like everything else about the skirt, it is a good solution.

I actually still like the hi-low look, however. It's never been ZOMG amazing to me, but I have a couple and will still wear them for at least another set of seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This is one of those trends that I would say PASS to. I kinda agree that it looks like mullet and even if it may be comfortable and beachy I think it will go the way of those jersey harem pants (you know the ones everyone was wearing 2 years ago that made it looked liked they poo-ed their pants).

BUT the coral color is very nice and brings out your Florida tan!

  46. I'm on the fence with the hi lo skirt in general, but you seem to be able to pull off anything. I like the skirt, but with your legs, I think it'd be better with a shorter hemline (and I don't often say that). I'd also pair it with a more tailored or body hugging shirt. Looking through the comments, the mullet skirt thing has me laughing. Love it!

  47. I absolutely love the hi-low skirt!! But I'm afraid I'll get too many and then trend will go away. But so cute for now!

  48. I think I like them better when the difference is a little more subtle. Sometimes it looks like someone got a little scissor happy!

  49. I've been seeing these in shop windows for the past couple months, but it's been way too cold in NYC (though today was nice!) to see how it plays out on the streets. It's one of those trends I associate with a very short shelf life. It looks fantastic on you! I don't know why you seem to think it doesn't work on your body type, though that's the same reason I'm on the fence about the mullet skirt as well- not sure it would flatter me. I'm petite and sorta curvy so I'm afraid it would swallow me even in heels. But maybe I could rock one with a shorter hem? I have a feeling these will be all over NYC when it warms up and I'll probably wind up buying one or two and pair 'em with t-strap heels or wedges.

    ReplyDelete
  50. For me it's absolutely a no-no. It never flatters the body. I find you fantastic, especially when wearing pencil skirts but this one, as I've just said, no, please. .Add it to the pile or make it the same length.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sorry but I'm just not a fan of this trend. I'm gonna go with a lot of the readers on this one and suggest whacking off the back and enjoying it as a mini. Love that color on you, though.

  57. Target sold an asymmetrical style skirt like this last year (2012), that looks like a hi-lo skirt. I turn my skirt about 90 degrees so one leg shows, and the other is a bit hidden. I'm only 5'4" and the shortest it goes is about knee-length and the longest is above the ankle so a bit more modest than some of the above. It looks pretty close to this, but they sold it jewel tones: http://www.target.com/p/merona-women-s-front-pocket-hi-lo-hem-maxi-skirt-assorted-colors/-/A-14295297#prodSlot=medium_1_2&term=hi+skirt

  58. well... i really LOVE this outfit on you. totally cute. i think it depends how you style it, sometimes if styled wrong they look TERRIBLE.. but when done well they're cute! I have a black one that I love. I also have a hi-lo dress from anthro that i get compliments on every time i wear it so it really just depends how its worn :)

  61. I love it! I just thing you could use a shirt that's tighter, so the whole look doesn't come off as floppy, or baggy, and it flatters your figure a little more. It also looks very good on you! B-) I also love the color combo, it's like downtoned patriotic, haha.

  62. J, just want to say I have no true fashion sense. I love your blog and this site. You are utterly amazing at putting together outfits. I'm going to begin putting my wardrobe together. Stating with one of your outfits. I will build on it using your advise on buying two pieces if the same color...never would have thought of that

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think they're adorable, if done correctly! And this is, it looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I do NOT like this trend. I think it is...well...stupid. That said, if I saw someone walking down the street wearing what you have on, I would look twice. The length is right and the color combo is spot on. You actually look quite fantastic. Keep the skirt. Wear it for church and brunch afterward.

  65. I have always questioned the high-low thing. Just can't get on board with it. Somehow, you make things work, but generally speaking, I'd pass!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm not a huge fan of the high-low trend, but I think it's a personal opinion. I can see that a few other people had the same idea I have, but I think you should take it a tailor and have them chop off the back to make it all one length. I love the color on you, so it would be worth it!

    ReplyDelete
  67. i love this skirt - the color is fabulous. also, you could always turn the skirt sideways and it is no longer a mullet skirt but an asymmetrical one. then it's never really out of style.

  69. I'm afraid that this is the first look with the high low skirt that I love!!! They really frustrate me because I have been on the search for the perfect maxi dress for quite a while now and every time I am somewhere and think I've found it, I pick it up and its a high low dress!!! This post is making me re-examine my hatred. One problem I have seen is that some of the skirts are wayyyyyy to high in the front. Why isn't it possible to be modest and cute at the same time?? Let me say more about your outfit though. LOVE LOVE LOVE! In love with the necklace! Love the colors together! Love the Retro shoe! Love anything Lauren Conrad... I think this skirt looks perfect on your body type! Keep!!!

  70. I like the color combination but as many posters, I'm not a big fan of the hi-lo trend. I agree with a poster that you could wear a paper bag and still make it work. Those shoes are fierce!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Not a huge fan of the hi low trend either! I don't think it is very flattering to anyone! I always feel like I have a super hero cape trailing behind me when I try one on. Lol! Love the idea of hemming it to one length tho! Such a pretty color! Love all your color ideas, btw!

  72. Not a fan of this trend at all! It always seems to look cheap and not at all classy.
