How To Layer Necklaces

Original post

I don't consider myself a necklace layering pro by any means. Figuring out how to wear three or more necklaces together has been challenging, so it made me really happy when I came up with this combo last summer using necklaces already in my closet (picture above). Here's my secret on how I overcame my mental roadblock + a couple other tips I've gathered to help you get inspired!

1. Hang them. Last summer I hung hooks just like the one below on my closet walls, for organizing my "delicate" necklaces. Seeing my necklaces on the wall was my lightbulb moment.  Instead of trying a bunch around my neck, I was able to see on the wall which ones would be the right length to layer together. You can easily do this with any nail, etc., and then pick lengths from there.

2. Get inspired. There is so much amazing necklace layering creativity on Pinterest. These are a few of my favorites; pictures like these challenge me to think outside the box!

3. Get technical. Use this chart to order the desired necklace lengths online - or measure your necklaces at home with a ruler - and create your own combo.

4. Use a formula. The recent Stella & Dot "layering school" email (some of which is pictured below) is what reminded me to do a post about layering necklaces. I love that you can cheat and order the combos they already came up with!

  3. I typically layer my "pearl" necklaces.  I found two different ones at the thrift store ($1 each!).  One was big white pearls and the other consisted of grey and blush colored pearls that were a little smaller.  I love when you can layer the actual necklace (mine are super long).  I love all the necklaces in this post!

  4. My husband made me a necklace holder for our anniversary and it was one of the best gifts ever.  I kind of have that "a-ha" moment once I started hanging all the necklaces and seeing how I could layer them.  My favorite ways to layer necklaces are using my delicate necklaces with my intitial and my two daughters initials and their birthstones with a longer heart necklace.  Heather

  5. I made my own jewellery holder a few years back.  It's not beautiful, but it works great - I upholstered a board with some shiny fabric/batting (used a staple gun).  Then I par-drilled holes and screwed in some hooks.  It's so handy, cost me about $10, and I find I wear my necklaces WAY more when I can see them all. here's a pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrbunsrocks/6620150675/

  10. I am glad you posted this. I tried to layer necklaces recently but they were not very compatible and I was terrified they were going to get tangled. It is a look a really like, though, so I think this tutorial was just what I needed.

  18. I love the look and have tried it - with limited success.  My problem is all the tangling!  All my chains get all bunched up and then it's just a mess.  What do you do?  Just untangle them every hour?

  24. I just have to thank you, J.!!    Earlier today, I read this post about layering necklaces, which I've never----(I don't know why!!)----done before.    With approximately 4 inches of *snow* on the ground here, for Valentine's Day Dinner out with my husband tonight, I wore my red suede, pointed-toe bow flats;  dress pants (black-and-white micro-houndstooth check);  a navy, short-sleeve, jersey-knit top with tiny, spread-out *rhinestones* on the upper chest/scoop-neckline area;  plus an open, semi-sheer, 3/4-sleeve black jacket over my short-sleeve top;  then my heavy, deep-burgundy sueded coat over all, (*pant-pant*, haha!!)

Anyway, with my (actually rather subdued) rhinestone top, I like to wear my "stars" necklace............ (i.e., lots of little dangling, 5-point, 1/4-inch-across, silvery stars, *packed* all along a single, 18-inch silvery chain)............ and the matching, 1 1/2 long, dangling silvery "stars" earrings.    I decided to TRY layering my red Venetian glass, puffed-5/8-inch-heart pendant~~on it's delicate silvery chain~~to hang below my "stars" necklace.    My dangling, SILVERY "stars" necklace, with my handblown glass, puffed RED heart pendant below it............ were just right together!!    Even my husband----(totally "unprompted," haha!!)----said my layering of 2 necklaces looked "real nice" together!!    Soooo, thank you so much, J. ............ FOR your very useful "How To Layer Necklaces" here!!

  31. I wear two 18" 10K gold necklaces together everyday. One has a circle pendant with a butterfly on it and the other has a tiny diamond. Even though they are the same length, it looks nice together because they are both delicate chains and the pendants are simple yet pretty :)

  32. Jenn I'm finding my desire to wear necklaces more of a challenge then I hoped. I'm 5'4" and a dd bra size. I can't seem to find the right balance. Any tips?

  33. Patricia, that's a great question! What kinds of necklaces/combos have you tried so far? I can see the shorter necklace combos - like the one with the white shirt in #2 - working since everything falls above the bust. Would something like that work?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jen the delicate necklaces are not a problem. Its the bubble necklaces like the one you wore with the citrus skirt and denim top. In general the bubble necklaces don't seem to work. Maybe with my height and chest size it's a bit too much?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Gotcha! How about the smaller bubble necklaces? Here is one example in today's post - the pink necklace I'm wearing with the purple dress has a similar look to the bubble necklaces but is smaller and placed higher on the chest: http://jseverydayfashion.com/home/2013/9/1/todays-everyday-fashion-real-life
