I wore the top outfit to a speaking engagement at a middle/high school a few weeks ago. I also tried it for fun with my neon sandals, a recent addition that I can't wait to wear this spring. This outfit got me thinking about geography. I grew up in Kansas, lived in Boston for four years, and now I'm in Orlando - and the dress codes in the Midwest, Northeast and Southern parts of the country could not be more different. I wouldn't have felt comfortable wearing this in Boston, but in Florida bright colors like these work year-round. Would you wear these bright colors in your hometown - if so, during which seasons?

What kind of speaking engagement? I am working on building myself as a brand and have loved your blog as some guidance on what works. Just wondering what you would speak to a High School about.

ReplyDeleteWe live in northern Italy right now, so if I wear anything but black/grey/neutrals, I stand out a bit too much for my taste. Originally from the South in the US though, so yes, I would gladly wear bright colors back home!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this look, but living in MI this is definitely a spring outfit. I would look ridiculous out in the bitter cold wearing that right now. For the next two months I'll be wearing sweaters and tall boots.

ReplyDeleteI live in Michigan, and right now, bright colors are hardly able to be found, so I wouldn't be able to pull this look off here! I'm not even sure I'd be brave enough to try it in the summer unless I was on vacation, ha. I love it on you though! :)

ReplyDeleteI live in SW FL and I wouldn't wear those colors right now. I see them on the tourists (and so so many white pants). I enjoy a break from the spring/summery clothes for a few months.

Lee, the teacher asked me to come in and share my personal career story as a motivator/encouragement to the kids, and the majority of the time was spent answering their questions about being an entrepreneur. I was one of the first (and the first on my mom's side) to go to college in my family. I was nervous that it didn't provide much value to the kids but I got the thank-you notes in the mail last week and it totally knocked my socks off how inspired the kids were!

ReplyDeleteI love the bright colors! They are very cheerful. I agree about how different the different parts of the country dress. I lived in Lawrence for a really long time. I think that style influence in you was one of the things that drew me to your blog. When I found your "Florida" blog, I thought I had finally broken out of my midwestern girl style mold but four months later when I learned you lived a long time in Kansas too, it hit home for me just how much Kansas style still influences me. I have also lived in Indianapolis and Annapolis but now I live in the rural south. All four places are VASTLY different. As a result, my wardrobe is pretty mixed up: style wise and clothing type wise. I have bright summer long sleeve sweaters for northern climates, sub zero winter gear for the midwest, and a variety of thin cotton sleeveless short things for muggy humid southern temps. I have more "simple" rural clothes and a little "fancier" city things. While I still need my negative twenty degree snow boots and parka occasionally for a snow storm, last week (in the south) I wore flip flops without a jacket or even a sweater. In the midwest, I wore snowboots, a parks, and lined wool pants with tights almost every day of December.

I really love bright colours. Toronto is your typical city where people dress according to the seasons - brighter during the late spring and summer months and darker during the fall until early spring. I try to push myself to wear colour throughout the seasons. In the cooler months I temper bright colours with darker tones (like navy and berry tones) and in the warmer months I typically go all out with brights.

I love this! I couldn't wear it during winter here (we got over 2 feet of snow in the last week), but would totally wear it in Spring/Summer. I like to use bright accents, but a fun outfit like that just isn't do-able for an Ottawa winter. :p
ReplyDeleteWe get 4 distinct seasons here, and the norm is to match your colours to the season. Pastels in spring, brights in summer, and so on. While I wouldn't wear this colour combo right away, I love it for spring. If my pregnant belly isn't too big by March/April, I will definitely be pairing my yellow pencil skirt and my mint blouse together.

ReplyDeleteI live in a town (in Pennsylvania) where the Historical Building Codes are *so strict* that (years ago) Pizza Hut was forced to "tone down" their traditional BRIGHT RED steel roof............ by replacing it with with a deep, OXBLOOD RED steel roof!! Another local Pizza Hut had later changed their traditional BRIGHT RED steel roof............ to a deep (almost black) CHARCOAL GRAY steel roof, (i.e., maybe to "play it safe"??) This general mindset is just the OPPOSITE of Norway/Sweden/Denmark/Iceland/Finland/Greenland - (which, as an understatement, are genuinely BEYOND-FRIGID in the Wintertime!!) - and where............ the use of *bright, g.l.o.r.i.o.u.s. color* in their Home and Business Construction; and in their Interior Design is often simply the NORM, (i.e., think IKEA)!!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't specifically have yellow jeans or a mint ("Cayman Blue") shirt like you have, I'd definitely (here in the snow!!) wear those two pieces now, J. ............ with a few modifications. I'd simply roll the (roll-tab) shirtsleeves down for warmth; and additionally wear a nude-colored knit camisole underneath. Because the shirt has two chest *patch pockets*, I'd wear............ an open Banana Republic deep SLATE-GRAY Neutral Cargo Vest (6/4/12), which has #2 sets of front *cargo pockets*............ plus a pair of Chinese Laundry "Grifter" COGNAC BROWN Neutral Knee Boots (12/15/11). I'd substitute the Ily Couture Yellow Bubble Statement Necklace *for* a Clock Necklace from the Westminster Abbey gift shop (11/22/11)............ then just top everything off with an MJR Sales "Via" mid-thigh-length NAVY Neutral Pea Coat (12/21/12)!!
Living in Chicago, I only do bright colors in the summer. Bright yellow will probably always be a no-go for me based on my skin tone. If I wear a bright color in the winter, it's something gem toned like cobalt blue or a vivid purple.

I live in Canada north and wear my yellow pants year round, swapping out sandles and light tops like your gorgeous blue for boots and sweaters. I don't think it's about where you live as much as about your personal style. I'm sure there would be people here who would say bright colours aren't suitable and would be the same people looking at me sideways! Style shouldn't be about blending into your community, but about what makes YOU feel confident and your heart smile! (IMHO!) And seeing different styles all around is inspiring - just one reason why the style blog community (including your great blog which I always love!) is so awesome!

I am in love with that mint color right now!! Love the outfit! I could rock it in Louisiana. We always have warm weather. I rarely bother to buy any type of heavy sweaters or coats. A time of year when people especially dress brightly is Mardi Gras. We wear lots of gaudy purple green and gold!

ReplyDeleteYear round over here in San Diego! I feel exactly the same as you do now that you live in Florida. Even in northern California, I wore a yellow top with a tweed blazer and black skinnies to tone it down and my mom said, "You are SO San Diego with that yellow!" Yeah, well!
