Today's Everyday Fashion: Camouflage

Inspiration via Real Beauty

I am unofficially naming camouflage as my favorite trend this year. I'm a little surprised at how much I love it, but this photo of Julianne Moore is what did me in. Camo skinnes have been on my shopping wishlist, but I haven't been able to find anything camouflage in stores. After my Black Friday shopping trip came up empty-handed I ordered the pair I'm wearing online from Zara. I don't generally "splurge" on trendy items (they were $60), however, the million times I plan to wear them should bring the cost per wear down to mere pennies. The fit couldn't be better and I love the rear flap pockets. I will be wearing outfit #2 today for the Macy's event - I needed something comfy enough to run around the store in - and it's a great mix of casual cool and glam. Are you a fan of the camouflage trend? Will you be wearing it?

Ahhh camo still makes me so nervous! All I can think of is how cool it was when I was in fifth grade, and how uncool it was when I finally started wearing it in sixth grade, haha! It was so ferociously uncool for so many years, it's hard to believe it's come back!
You've definitely worn it well though! I adore that second outfit. Maybe I'll pick up a camo scarf or tee here soon. Small beginnings, right? Ha!

  2. I am not sure how I feel about camo. Don't get me wrong- I love your outfit.  The color combo is so grown up and the shoes are gorgeous. Like the previous commenter I remember how cool it was in about middle school and how soon that drastically changed. That is why personally I would be a little more cautious. I admire your bravery though!

  3. I am SO sad these are sold out - I would have bought them immediately! I normally would not think of myself as a camo girl but I think these are adorable!

  4. I have the ones from the Gap. Wore them with hot pink heels and black sweater. Another time with nude heels and cream sweater. So versatile!

  5. I LOVE the color combo in outfit number two, and the gold cap heels look awesome witht he more masculine print of the pants! I never would have thought I would like camo either (it makes me think too much of my East Texas side of the family's hunting habits) but I really love this look on you! Definitely a breath of fresh air. :)

  9. I don't understand this trend....the pants look good on you but it's something I would probably never wear.

  10. I really like the way these pants fit you, plus the burgundy looks great and adds a more feminine touch, especially with the cap toe shoes!

  11. They look great on you, but I'm really not into this trend. This is one trend I'm gonna have to pass on. You pull it off nicely though!

  12. Did you tally up the suggestions from yesterday's post?  Which dress won?

  13. You look cute, but I'm gonna have to tap out on this one. I'll leave the camo for college boys and Duck Dynasty.

  14. Love camo! Now I have more options thanks :)

  15. And the shoes!!!! Wow. Love them!!!!

  16. I love the camouflage trend! I bought a jacket from Old Navy last year for $11, but I haven't worn it as yet because I didn't know how to style it. Thanks for the inspiration, J!

  17. I personally don't like the camouflage trend... I almost feel like it's disrespectful to our soldiers using the print as a fashion statement :/

  18. I love the Gap camo pants! I picked them up on Black Friday for $20-some! (A price I'm willing to spend on a trend.) I can't wait to see how else you style them!

I am concerned though that they are meant for a younger crowd (early 20s) rather than the mid and lates. What do you think? And where/for what occasion would you wear these?

  19. I haven't bitten the bullet yet, but these two looks convinced me that I like camo:
    1) http://atlantic-pacific.blogspot.com/2012/08/san-francisco-stopover.html (the one where she wears a jean jacket with it, scroll down a bit)2) http://www.wendyslookbook.com/2012/10/double-camo-abstract-print-olive-shades/ (I would buy this jacket in a SECOND if I could find it for what it originally sold for on Zara's site)My husband is in the Air Force, and I asked him about whether it's disrespectful or not.  He said he doesn't feel it is.  I'm sure there are others who will disagree, but there you go.  I almost think of it like this: since it's a pattern you'd see in nature, the military doesn't have ownership on that I guess! : )  The knees on your pair kinda bug me, but they are still cute.

  20. Love it, always have! Zara pants fit me great too. Lucky we have a store on Tampa. I don't know if it'll be appropriate for the office though. I definitely would wear it all the time for casual. I love it with a rusty orange or brown top.

  21. You look great , but I think because of the area of the country I'm from I will skip this look. Around camo is for hunters and the army. Not much of a fashion statement when old dudes with guns are wearing the same pants as you :)

  22. on the first picture that you posted of you wearing the trend with ankle boots.. how do you get them to stay in the boot like that? i have a pair of boots that i LOVE but my skinny jeans eventually bunch and look funny. any tips? thank u!

  23. The wedges with the army pants is a really good idea! I think it looks better because it really matches the brown based print more

  24. I really really like outfit number 2! It does look super comfy but so put together at the same time. Love those colors together too. I tend not to buy clothes online, but it seems like sometimes its just the best way to get exactly what you want.

Check out Venus. I just bought a pair there- I'm 5'10" and they fit wonderful! They are cargo skinnies.

  27. I really love that camouflage jacket from Topshop - I'm considering buying it for a while now. It looks pretty versatile and I have lots of ideas about how to wear it)

  28. As someone who grew up in SE Oklahoma, where people wear camouflage every day...I have to say nope. I associate it with deer hunting lol.  I like your look since the grey tones it down. :)

  29. Ashley, I've worn these ankle boots with several pairs of skinnies and it just depends on the material and fit of the pant. This camo pair has zip ankles, so they are very fitted around the ankle and don't budge. My skinny jeans are looser and bunch up throughout the day though.

  30. Nyx, it had never crossed my mind that camouflage might be disrespectful! I've never heard that before. I usually associate it with hunting, and there are SO many things in fashion that are influenced by the armed forces. If you own a pea coat, anything with brass buttons, a green army jacket, the list goes on... all of it comes from the armed forces.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Great questions. I like to use Jennifer Aniston as my example. I think she can rock them no problem, so I'm definitely good (I'm 29). Also, these pants will be my staple, replacing jeans for running errands, casual occasions. I would also wear a pair of strappy shoes and a sequin tank for a night out though!

  32. Interesting... it had never crossed my mind that camouflage might be disrespectful! I've never heard that before. I usually associate it with hunting, and there are SO many things in fashion that are influenced by the armed forces. If you own a pea coat, anything with brass buttons, a green army jacket, the list goes on... all of it comes from the armed forces!! Also, is wearing the American flag disrespectful? Never thought about that before either, but I'm thinking that is along the same lines?

  33. Too funny!! I don't think I've ever worn or owned anything camo until now!

  34. It's such a close race. I have things I don't love about both - I agree w. several commenters that the empire waist of the pleated one is too juniors, and the other one is  just too big I think. I'm think I'm going to keep hunting and will let you guys know!

  35. Camo + gray + deep red is such a great combo! I just ordered a pair of military-green cargo skinnies and I can't wait to use these two looks for inspiration. I can't quite commit to that much camo. Maybe in a layered tank someday. :)

  36. I have the same problem! Clever straps like these would be useful in those situations (not spam, I just searched for them): http://www.etsy.com/listing/96346479/black-elastic-pants-clips-boot-straps?ref=v1_other_2

  47. My husband and I are  b.o.t.h.  Military Veterans of the United States Air Force ourselves, J.;  and neither one of us feels----(and this is only our individual opinions)----that wearing a camouflage print, in non-military-issued clothing, is disrespectful to soldiers ........................ e.g., as our friends who are hunters are doing, right now during Deer Hunting Season in Pennsylvania;  as some of our friends have done, playing Paintball out in the woods;  as we've even seen very little girls wearing cute *pink* camouflage denim flounce-skirts;  and as some current military parents are now buying camouflage sheet sets and comforters~~(green, blue, or pink!!)~~for their own kids' bedrooms this Christmas, simply so their kids "can feel closer to" the one military parent~~(Dad or Mom)~~who is away on Military Assignment.    However, in most states it's now illegal for non-military persons to wear (authentic or reproduced) Official Military rank, insignia, medals, or patches............ i.e., if you are not a soldier, it's now illegal in most states to impersonate a soldier, using those Official Military "designations";  but a camouflage print is not an Official Military "designation," though.

Anyway, others are most certainly............ (i.e., *MOST certainly*, because this is a free country!!)............ *entitled to their opinions*, of course;  but this is just a very individual opinion from two USAF Military Veterans here, J.:  we don't find your wearing ZARA's "Camouflage Skinny Trousers" disrespectful or offensive to us personally.    And that's just our 2-cents' worth for you!!

  48. My husband is a veteran of the Marines, and I love him in his camouflage!

Oh, you meant will I be wearing it?  ;-)  I DO like the look, although I haven't tried it and probably won't soon - I have other things I'm on the hunt for to add to my wardrobe this season.  I love the little zipper pocket on your pants!  Super cute!

  50. I love the camouflage trend, though I haven't yet made an investment in it. I like your outfit above even more so than Julianne Moore's, though I really love how she combined the camouflage and cheetah patterns. They work so well together!

  51. I come from a military family. My mom and dad were both active duty, I am a veteran as well as my sister and my brother is still serving. I am married to a man serving in the military. I don't see how wearing camo is offensive. Clearly you aren't expecting anyone to think you are doing a job you aren't. If you decided to wear a full on uniform with rank etc. that would be a different story. That being said, I don't understand the trend. I would never wear it as a fashion statement. LOL It feels kind of silly to me. But to each their own :)

  52. Hi J: I left a comment on your newest post kind of explaining why I felt the way I do.  It really is just a personal thing and I think it differs for me from pea coats and whatnot because it's SUCH a standout print/statement, you know? I suppose I've just taken too many psychology courses/studied with patients of PTSD and whatnot to an extent where I know how deep relations/associations can run and so I try to be really careful with those types of things; even the littlest triggers can set people with a mental illness off! Even addicts. So, like said, it's just personal opinion and I don't take it out on the women that choose to wear camo, I just think it's something to think about :) I hope you know your outfit didn't offend me!! Like said, I just wanted to bring up some food for thought :)
