Maybe it's because I live in Florida, but I crave bright/fun color combos constantly, even in the winter. This inspiration photo caught my eye because I love that her wool coal is turquoise, and her cable knit sweater is bright purple. What fun winter clothes! I decided to give the same color combo a spin with my own clothes, resulting in a fall version of her outfit. What season(s) would you feel comfortable wearing this color combo?

This is such a fun look! JCrew is a great place for inspiration and different color combos. I am all for wearing brights all year long. It brings a little bit of liveliness wearing colors to cold and dark winter days. Heather
ReplyDeleteYou know, I was having a conversation about this with my sister the other day. She is going to school for fashion design, and told me that bright colors are for summer and I need to put away all my hot pink and bright yellow stuff for the winter and get some more dark colors/jewel tones. But almost all my clothes — summer OR winter — are bright colors because I love them and feel good in them! So I'm torn: on the one hand, I LOVE this combo, but I would probably pair it with jeans instead of the yellow pants to tone it down just a tad. :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I was confident enough to wear that out of the house...I'm sort of a scaredy cat when it comes to bold colors. :) Speaking of being scared, I was wondering if you had any tips/inspiration pics for wearing black and white polka dot pants...I bought them from LOFT and might return them if I can't figure it out/muster up the courage. The dots are small-scale, but I still wonder if they might be too "trendy" and I'll wear them this year and never again. Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteWhat a gutsy outfit! If I were to wear that look, I'd probably go with a neutral (black) cardigan.
ReplyDeleteI would never think to put these colors together but you look fantastic!!

I would never wear those colors, even though I love brights (hate calling brights "neon" because usually they're not actually neon). I think the inspiration photo works because of proportions. Your cardigan is too small for a relatively close fitting blouse and tight jeans. Add a larger jacket or sweater and it might work.
ReplyDeleteomg - I hate this color so much :)))) I don't why but it gives me this feeling of something industrial and greasy....

I agree that a turquoise coat would've worked a lot better in this look (and made it more "winter") - if only I had one! :-) The cardigan and jeans are slim fitting, the shirt is oversized.
ReplyDeleteThe print sounds classic and will go with lots of things -from a white striped shirt, to more polka dots to layered solid colors. You can definitely get some use out of them this year if you wear them a lot, whether they will still be in style next year is a tough call. I say go with your gut - if you are in love with them, then go for it! If not, then pass.
ReplyDeleteAllie, I think it totally depends where you live. If I lived in NYC I wouldn't wear this outfit - I would switch out one of the colors for a neutral. In the Midwest, I would add a neutral coat like camel or navy to tone it down - but in Florida, it's a whole different world and bright colors are always in! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love mixing colors and prints like this! It's so much more fun when you think outside the box with fashion....and I LOVE the shoes with it! Super cute, J!
ReplyDeleteI think you look great, like always. i've been more adventurous in my clothes this year, so I would definately wear this. very cute!
ReplyDeletelove it! I have always been scared of yellow/mustard pants because of my size but you sure do make it look good

Emily, I use Dryel for these types of shirts! Gentler and cheaper (and easier) than traditional dry cleaning.
ReplyDeleteI love it! It's bright, but not crazy, and it's totally cute :)
ReplyDeleteL-O-V-E this. You make it look so wearable!
ReplyDeleteLove your take on this inspiration outfit. I think I would more wear this colour combo during spring or fall, but I love how J Crew pushes the boundaries with wearing vibrant colour in winter. It makes sense given how dreary winter can be, especially here in Toronto.

I am so excited that you posted this today! I bought the mustard jeans from Kohl's and I hate them on me. :( They just don't fit right, so I've been on a hunt (with not much luck) for the right mustard jean. Thanks for posting some options! I'll be ordering a couple of these in search for "Mustard Right". ;)
ReplyDelete"Mustard right" - I literally lol'ed haha! Thanks Kammi!
ReplyDeleteI love your outfit! Where did you get your necklace? Love your blog and the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kim! Just added the details for the necklace to the post!
ReplyDeleteI just *love* wearing bright colors *anytime*; and if the fabrics are heavier and/or thicker for the Wintertime, that's really "do-able," too, (e.g., as in your Inspiration Photo)!! I personally think it's also even "do-able" by simply LAYERING lighter-weight pieces, too----(i.e., as you've done here)----because you *still* can achieve the warmth that you need!!
ReplyDeleteIn the Wintertime here in Pennsylvania, wearing bright colors is particularly important because doing so helps with the comprehensive treatment of S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder); and doing so also............ helps the Rescue Squad to FIND YOU............ when you're often buried up-to-your-NECK in *s.n.o.w.*, (haha)!!
Great outfit idea! Love how you mix up the prints with the colors. I have a similar belt and the same shoes and am always at a loss about how to mix them up. Thanks for the ideas!!!
ReplyDeleteI love wearing bright colors year-round, but three brights is just too much in one outfit. I'd replace the purple with something muted.
ReplyDeleteAwesome color outfit! you can also find a great collection of
ReplyDeletehooded fleece jackets in different colors!
Very precise ! nicely done J :)
ReplyDeleteThe color combo reminds me of my bedroom in the early 90s! Hehe! Love it.
ReplyDeleteLOVE all the bright colors! :) Especially for Fall/Winter!
ReplyDelete[nat in love]
I hear you on the "winter" since I'm here in FL too :)
