I like hers better |
How I wore it |
Top photo: I like the inspiration outfit better than my recreation, but this photo answers two questions I've been hearing a lot lately. The first is can you wear cropped pants in the winter? I don't have boots that come up high enough to illustrate, but I think her outfit is a good example of how to do this. To cover the gap between the pants and the top of the boots, I would add a thick cable knit sock. The other question is how to not look "bigger" when wearing thick sweaters? While you can never look completely slim in a thick sweater and coat, you can wear something slim on the bottom to counteract the puffiness up top - either leggings (if your sweater covers your bum), cropped pants, or skinny jeans.
Bottom photo: When it's chilly, it's tempting to just throw on a hooded sweatshirt and jeans and be done with it! I opted for a knit sweater and slip on booties instead. Just as cozy, but packs way more style punch.

Love the chunky sweater! Perfect pairing with the cropped pants too.
ReplyDeleteDid you try pairing your printed crops with your booties? I have been considering doing something like this. I would have liked to see you put the two together!
ReplyDeleteThank you for saying this: "either leggings (if your sweater covers your bum)". I see women's bums in leggings way too often. Not a good look!
ReplyDeleteKate, I tried with a couple different booties in my closet but none of them worked. There was a huge gap between the boots and pants - my pants being shorter than hers was a definite factor in it not working for me!
ReplyDeletethose sweaters look so cozy

I've been trying to get my hands on those H&M pants to no avail. Luckily I got The Limited ones for cheap money and they are a great stand-in.
ReplyDeletei love that sweater! what size are you wearing?
ReplyDeleteThanks Meghan! It's a size Small.
ReplyDeleteJ, what are your thoughts on sequined cardigans?
ReplyDeleteI don't own one, but I would totally be game! They could be used for textured pattern mixing like with more sequins or lace.
ReplyDeletei love your oxblood comfy sweater!!! i need to just purchase the darn thing already. As for cropped pants in the fall/winter, i rocked that look today. :) I always seem to roll my jeans when I wear my ankle booties, and I don't think it looks weird at all. I obviously wouldn't wear them when it's pouring rain, but i think it's perfectly fine. :)

It is really hard to make a huge sweater look good. My boyfriend hates my chunky sweaters because they hide my figure (go figure, a boy would say that... Ha!). I usually use a belt to even it out, gathering in my waist some. Otherwise I can look really Rolly-Polly!
ReplyDeleteI love the color of your sweater. I've been seeing a lot of that lately :)
ReplyDeletelove the inspiration photo as well, I might try to recreate this as well!

Love the inspiration photo too! I have those some cropped pants from H&M, I will have to use your photo for inspiration on what to pair with them :)

Everything but Ordinary
I love the printed cropped pants. However, I bought a pair from limited, and several of my students asked me if I was wearing pajamas! They were lot loose or baggy, either! Even my husband said they looked like pajama pants. Now I don't want to wear them any more.
ReplyDeleteAfter living in New England my whole life, I think it's really hard to pull off the bulky cardigan. I guess it's a "look", but there are other silhouettes for warm sweaters. The jeans w/booties in the inspiration pic. is very current/elliot. I've learned you have to do it w/out socks, which doesn't always make sense in the winter, right? Anyway, it does look cuter a little shorter with some ankle showing. Target has some great dupes and they are pretty good quality (printed denim).
ReplyDeleteLove your end-result look. So chic and comfy.

thanks for the idea! i just ordered one from the Limited. I initially tried to stay away from them because I sort of thought it was something an older woman would try to wear to look young (okay not the best reasoning) but I loved how it was styled on the victoria's secret website
ReplyDeleteI love chunky sweaters! Great for winter! I like your take on the style.
ReplyDeleteLove the big chunky sweater!

Love both yours and the inspiration's sweater! :)

I actually bought those Gap pants in the inspiration photo as a stand-in for the JCrew polka dot cafe capris (almost $100 cheaper). I really love the Gap ones! Love your pants too! Our only H&M store is all the way on the other side of town - I wish they'd let you order online.
ReplyDeleteJ, I love your blog! You're my personal style consultant :) - Just wondering, is there a link to the inspiration photo, i have to have that sweater!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mimi! I got the inspiration photo this summer, before the clothes were in stores (retailers "leak" photos like those sometimes, months in advance). A store associate might be able to tell you if you show them the picture - I know the pants are on right sale now, so chances are the sweater is in stores too!
ReplyDeletei know i am late to the party on this post, but i am all for the idea of cropped pants/jeans with booties in the winter! i have a few pairs i didn't retire for the season (i live in new england) based on color and how they look with winter items such as sweaters and jackets. i think the color/print is more important than the length to make them feel season appropriate. my neon yellow and white cropped skinny jeans are retired until spring, but the turquoise and tie dye are in it for the long haul because the rest of my wardrobe made it easy to "winterize" them.
