Guys, I might be in a bit of a style rut. I think fashion is fun and usually I enjoy it but lately it's frustrating me! I'm hoping to break the streak soon; in the meantime here are two looks with my favorite baby blue shirt. I wore the top outfit for a lunch meeting and to the CFL Lady Bloggers Meetup yesterday. I don't necessarily love this outfit (although I really like the blue + burgundy color combo) and don't get me started on how not perfect the photography is (I used natural lighting as always, but the sun is only shining on the middle for some reason). The bottom outfit I photographed awhile ago, and would be really cute with nude pumps. Have you ever been in a style rut? How did you break it?

I've absolutely been in a style rut before! Usually I go 2-3 days wearing "blah" outfits, spend some time on Pinterest or reading fashion magazines and then get excited to style some new outfits - OR head to the mall (but that can be dangerous).

Your site has inspired me OUT of a fashion rut and I always look to you for how to pair things. I do have a question: how do you know when to pair black or brown accessories (shoes, belt, purse, etc.) with your outfit? I pair black heels with everything from work to play and I've noticed many girls wear brown instead with colors I thought you could only wear black with. I'm going out on a limb here, but if you're in a rut right now and aren't wild about outfit posts, maybe you could do a post explaining how to pair colors and accessories? Like, wear brown heels with this set of colors and black with this set? And throw a wild card color in? Thanks for all you do!

ReplyDeleteI have heard a lot of great things about 31, would love the chance to get to try it out! About every other week I feel like I am in a style rut and I typically sift through pinterest and look for styles with items that I have. I look for "lace skirt" and find all different kind of outfits that I never thought of, if that doesn't help inspire me I try and look around the city and see what new trends are coming around.

ReplyDeleteOk, so I've been in a fashion rut lately too, but last night my brain was just exploding with ideas! My advice is to just give yourself an hour (maybe put on some holiday music) and go shopping in your own closet. Last night I just tried on a bunch of outfits and hung them up 'ready to wear' in my closet. I tried to pair things together I've never worn in the same outfit before.

The thing that usually snaps me out of it is doing something different that will stimulte my brain, like going to an art museum, trying a new recipie, or even just people-watching. I love your lavender, blue, and cream combination!

ReplyDeleteI love this suggestion! I tend to tire of patterns after only one or two wears, but I did recently pick up some more polka dots and stripes, which are patterns I don't tire of as quickly. Now to figure out what in the world to wear them with... :-)

ReplyDeleteEven though it doesn't look like you're in a rut, I can believe that it feels like it. When I am in a rut, I will go back to basics, and just wear what I know and am comfortable with -- with no creativity involved (for me, blue jeans and a sweater, e.g.). This gives me a chance to recharge my batteries. If that doesn't work, you could also try challenging yourself to wear things you haven't worn in a long time, or build an outfit around one piece (e.g., a scarf). Best wishes!

Although I don't have to "dress" for work everyday, (i.e., I have an in-home office), I sometimes feel like I'm in a real style RUT, too!! Since I love *Nature*~~(and often use flower photos, always giving source credit, in online correspondence with my faraway family members/longtime friends)~~I'll occasionally Google something like, say, "BURGUNDY AND BLUE flower images." It's interesting to then see how many not only "Real Flowers" are there; but also how much "Outfit Inspiration," too, (i.e., and often more uniquely-different outfits/accessories THAN from simply Searching for a specific piece/style of clothing or accessories)!! Googling "Blue and Burgundy flower images" will result in totally d.i.f.f.e.r.e.n.t. images; but it's just fun/creative/inspiring to *choose* any two colors............ and do a "flower images" Search............ i.e., EVEN FOR Outfit Inspiration, J.!!

ReplyDeleteFashion ruts are the worst! My recommendation would be to try to shake up your sillhouettes a little bit. I love skinny jeans, but I think it's super cool to mix in a wide-leg trouser or classic bootcut every now and then to shake it up. Keep up the good work - your clothes are adorable!

That's when I usually end up changing my hair, playing around more with makeup, or going out of my normal fashion comfort zone (which you are very good at facilitating!). I'll also pop into different stores than I normally shop at to see if maybe there are things I've been missing out on. Watching "What Not to Wear" is helpful too. :)

It maybe time to travel to an undiscovered state or country and walk around the different areas. Sometimes I scan the fashion websites and go to some repeated areas, but when i get the opportunity or create an opportunity to escape to unfamiliar territory, it does your mind and body good...like milk:)

Normally when I'm in a style rut I go online and start looking through all sorts of fashion blogs-especially yours!- and find new outfits that I love. I try to find an outfit that excites me and then try to match the attitude of it as best I can. Sometimes buying one new piece, like a sweater or pants, can inspire new outfit ideas too!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE that pastel pinspired outfit! That is one of my favorite outfits that you've posted in a while. You could try wearing something really girly with lace and bows to get you out of your rut. You mostly wear a lot of colored denim lately I think, not as many girly (non-pencil) skirts.
