Today's Everyday Fashion: The Chambray Shirt

I felt like Goldilocks looking for the perfect chambray shirt this year. "This one is too dark, this one is too light, this one is too expensive"... and then I spotted this one walking down the aisle at Kohl's. It was exactly what I was looking for! I didn't really shop at Kohl's prior to winning a gift card last spring, and I've used most of it on supplies for Africa and household items, but the occasional fashion item has caught my eye such as this top, and the mustard jeans I'm wearing. I love both and can already tell they will be staples this fall, because I've worn this outfit twice and we are barely into chilly weather. What is your ideal chambray shirt?

Shirt: Mudd c/o Kohl's, $20
Jeans: Unionbay c/o Kohl's, $23
Necklace: My Stella & Dot website, $98
Purse: Karen Millen, $235 (similar, vegan)

Take a close look...this one is polka dot!! I bought it in a M (the only size in my store) and had to return it since it was too big. I also bought another chambray shirt from that brand that has a crochet back!  Adorable and comfy!

  3. I believe a denim/chambray shirt has been the most versatile piece in my closet.  I have remixed it so many ways from casual to dressy.  The best part was I found it at Walmart several years ago for a whopping $3!  Who knew it would become a favorite.

I love you shirt paired with the mustard skinnies!  Heather

  11. I have those EXACT same jeans and LOVE them! They aren't too dark and aren't too bright----just right. :) And I have also been looking for an inexpensive denim shirt. I bought one a couple of years ago at Walmart for $3 (Miley Cyrus brand) and actually it's held up well. But I'd rather have a better quality one. I will have to check out the one at Kohl's. BTW, LOVE, love, love your necklace! It's on my Christmas wishlist.

  13. I recently purchased a polka-dot chambray from Old Navy and I'm loving it! It's chambray with a little extra and looks super cute under other polka dot or striped sweaters. I got some inspiration from J. Crew and wore it with a black pencil skit and got lots of compliments. Link to shirt below:

  14. I bought 2 chambray's from JCREW FACTORY online - I got a darker and a faded one - SUPER - great prices on both too!

  15. Agree with Rachel. JCREW Factory chambray camp shirts are good quality and reasonably priced.

  16. Agree with Kimberly's post as well. Walmart made one a few years back from Miley Cyrus. Bought it for $9 and it looks more expensive than it is. I just cut the tag out! :)

  19. Love your blog! I put together the exact same look on a recent vacation!

  20. I have had nothing but trouble finding the right one. I prefer a little darker than the one you chose, though the style is pretty close to what I am on the hunt for. I want it long enough to tuck into jeans and to cover my butt and crotch in leggings, but I don't want it to look like a men's shirt. I thought I found it yesterday, but the top of the sleeves were so tight that I felt like the Hulk and worried I would burst out at any moment, which is funny cause I am rather small on the top half.

    Ah, the quest continues...

  23. I love chambray shirts now, before I would not be caught in one. But something about me changed, I can honestly say it probably was because I enjoy country music and they look great with leggings, skirts or jeans! I have a light one but I wouldn't mind a darker wash! I like how you paired it with the mustard pants!

  25. I have the same experience! I feel like I'm an expert now, as I have 3 denim shirts in my closet. (i'm obsessed, but hey- they go with EVERYTHING). I bought my first one at Target, and they are bringing them back this season as well in different styles. I also bought a longer/lighter one at Off 5th (Saks). And of course I fell in love with the ombre look so I found that at BCBG. I think it's good to have one in a lighter and darker shade, depending on the bottom's you wear. I love the Quicksilver one you posted above. Shoot.... do I really need another? :D

  26. I'm in love with those jeans! I tried on a similar pair at Marshall's but they just weren't it. Maybe I'll take a kohls pit stop after work!

  27. I really like the ombre-type of look your shirt has. And I'm amazed that it came from Kohls. They've really upped their game recently, haven't they? Also, I'm a big fan of the Urban Outfitters one you've linked to.

  28.  same here! I saw all the cute shoes J bought on there so I wanted to check it out. They said it's "under construction". Fingers crossed!

  31. My favorite chambray shirt is from the JCrew outlet. It is perfect, comfy, soft.. everything. I think I only got it for $40 or less.

  32. J, I'm newer to visiting your site, but I saw these in store at Charlotte Russe the other day and the quality is surprisingly impressive for a $3.50 belt http://www.charlotterusse.com/product/Accessories/Belts/entity/pc/2116/c/0/sc/2589/212965.uts?colorCode=301324542_837.  I was about to buy them, however the sizing is unfortunate. They only come in S/M and M/L. I'm typically a size 8 or 29 and could barely fit the M/L belt around my hips at the last notch, so I had to pass on it.  Just thought I'd share the awesome deal. The belt also comes in mint.

  33. I've had the same problem! I bought a chambray shirt, but I haven't worn it much b/c it's too dark. I like the one you've found!

  34. I must be learning something from your blog!! I tried this outfit actually a few wks ago but with cords that color and tan boots! HAHAHA!

  35. I actually prefer denim shirts to chambray... why wear an imitation when you can have the real thing, right? :) Plus, denim is much thicker and warmer for these chilly days we're finally getting!

  37. Any recommendations for a slightly longer version?  Would love one long enough to tuck in with jeans, but also cover me up when wearing leggings and tall boots...

    ReplyDelete
  38. I got my chambray at old navy and it's the best thing I own (ok that's a little bit of an exaggeration but I do love it). I find many chambray shirts are too short, so I ordered it in a tall and it fits perfectly. I also have the pink/red version :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Stephanie, I love the idea from a commenter above to order it in a "tall" size so that it fits longer. Chambray would look great with leggings and boots!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Cassie, I have the opposite problem! This shirt was nice and thin ensuring I will get plenty of use out of it in Florida. :-)

  41. Thanks for the tip Emily and welcome to the blog! :-)

  42. If you wear it a lot I'm all for having a couple different versions! :-)

  43. Thanks Gizelle! MJR Sales should hopefully be back soon! They have so much merchandise, I can imagine it would take awhile to move all of it (they moved to a new warehouse).

  46. What is it about chambray shirts? I pinned an outfit last fall with a chambray shirt, leggings and boots and just found the perfect shirt last week at Winners ( the Canadian TJMAXX) I think part of the problem is so many of us want a classic chambray and many are embellished or made short to suit todays "look" but it's def not my look! So glad we're all getting what we want and your site is invaluable for sourcing! Thanks for all the great posts:)

  51. I love how you paired chambray and mustard.  My ideal chambray is usually one that is mid-tone in colour similar to you last photo, and feels light like an oxford shirt rather than a true denim.  This is so that I can dress it up or down with ease.  Here is a picture of mine: http://coverupchic.blogspot.ca/2012/09/fall-suiting-canadian-tuxedo-la-j-crew.html
