Today's Everyday Fashion: Rocker Chic

Today, I present you with two versions of the same outfit. The first is a little number I styled with my new black leather jacket. The second is a toned-down version with a blazer and conservative shoes. I like the first one better, but sometimes life calls for a more conservative shoes so I wanted to show you both. Also, I can't believe I'm typing this but I really did drop $299 on a leather jacket at H&M while I was in NYC. I never splurge like that, and I also questioned whether H&M was really the place to invest (what swayed me is that their clothes are cut small, so the fit is amazing). I got nervous and ordered this similar version from Victoria's Secret (with a $75 off coupon), so I could compare. I'm definitely keeping one of them, I will keep you posted. Which version of this outfit would you rock?

Shirt: H&M, $17 (similar, similar)
Skirt: c/o Style by Marina, $39 (see how else I wore this skirt here and here)
Top leather jacket: H&M, $299 (also bought this one to compare)
Bottom blazer: Express, old (similar)
Top shoes: Colin Stuart c/o MJR Sales, $27 (similar, similar)
Bottom shoes: Calvin Klein/Filene's Basement, $75 (similar)
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift
Ring: My Stella & Dot website $69
Bracelets: My Stella & Dot website $59 and $32 and $39 and $79

  5. I could wear the latter to work and then head out in it. Maybe a blazer with the shoes from the top outfit? :)
I vote the H&M jacket over the VS one!

Thanks for this post.  I actually wore a very similar skirt yesterday and you have given my some ideas!

  12. Love love love. They both look great - the top one for going out or even for my job at an ad agency; the bottom for work or something more conservative. This is one of my favorite looks you've presented. I can't wait to steal it.

  13. I love both looks!  Animal print is going to be big for Fall - never thought to get a pencil skirt in an animal print.

  16. Wow, that leather jacket is awesome!  I love H&M and the first outfit is definitely my favorite!  It is refreshing to see you in that style jacket and splurging on a leather jacket is necessary sometimes.  As long as the leather is nice and has that butter soft feel, it doesn't matter where you buy the jacket either.  Great looks though and the second is very wearable for work still.

  19. It IS pricey, but pieces like that last forever, so you really get your money's worth in the end I think! and I love gold accents! KEEP IT, J! :)

  27. Hi J! OMG loving this outfit, both of them!  I like the first one because of the leather jacket and the heels, I have the same ones! I think i prefer the H&M jacket, but they are both so similar. I like the second outfit too, great choice for a meeting with flare!

  28. I loooove this outfit. In fact, I'm tempted to buy the skirt but we all know how patterns and my butt go together. They don't. I could be mistaken for wild game and shot in a corn field. But it might be worth it to die that stylish and cute!

    ReplyDelete
  29. The leather jacket looks great now but are gold accents going to look dated in a couple of years? It's a lot to spend for something that might only be in style this year.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love the first one, but could wear the second to work more easily, so thanks for showing both.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love what you've been doing lately with the same outfit as a side by side for two different looks. Please keep this up! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Augh, I love this skirt.  And this look!  I always love when you do rocker chic looks.  Also, I never even knew there was an H&M item that existed that cost that much!  New York thing, maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Love the Jacket!!! Every once in a while a girl just has to splurge!! Looks great!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love both outfits! One for a night on the town and one for work. Thanks for showing! I would keep the jacket from H&M. I'm so jealous you went to an H&M in New York. They always have great pieces than smaller cities.

Please post both jackets once the one from Victoria's Secret arrives. I bet the one from H&M still looks and feels better. Plus it has gold hardware! Usually leather motorcycle jackets are with silver hardware.

  35. I love your short! I was going to get that but sweaters caught my attention at the store. Haha

  37. I love these looks! I am new to your blog and a big fan! I am just curious to how the splurge on the jacket affects your monthly budget for clothes shopping? My favorite thing about your blog is that it really is "everyday fashion" for those of us that can't afford a ton of big name items. I love the idea of a splurge once and a while though, when you love something so much!

  38. I love that first motorcycle jacket, it matches nearly everything!

  39. Lurve that first outfit!  And I'd love to hear your thoughts on the VS jacket, specifically the sleeve length.  I hate buying stuff from them and having to pay shipping back for items that don't fit (why they can't accept items in-store, I don't know), and my monkey arms are so tough to fit!

  40. Ow wow- that skirt is amazing! Loving everything leopard right now!

  41. The first outfit for me.  Love the ensemble and it is definitely inspiring to try that look.  I know what you mean about the leather jacket.  Sometimes you find the right item in the most unlikely store.  I had been searching for years to finally find a leather jacket that fit, felt and looked the way I imagined.  I found mine at Zara and this is what it looks like (plus the tale of finding the perfect one): http://coverupchic.blogspot.ca/2012/09/fall-attire-leather-and-blue.html

  42. I love the H&M leather jacket and totally agree w/you regarding the tighter/more tailored fit they offer. However, I also think $299 is steep for H&M...but it does look nice. I guess it's one of those purchases where you have to consider how much it means to you. http://prettytallchronicles.blogspot.com/

  43. Jen, the jacket just got here tonight and the XS fits me like a dream. I sometimes have trouble with sleeve length but these were perfect!

  44. Thank you Autumn and welcome to the blog! I haven't decided for sure yet, but I think I'm going to deduct $50-100 from my monthly budget for the next 3 months to cover the cost! I will be sure to share my final decision in my budget post for September. :-)

  45. The gold hardware is also what sold me! (great minds think alike) All my purses and jackets have gold hardware. The VS jacket has gold too!

  46. Thanks Audrey! Definitely a NYC thing. They had an entire section of $60 shirts, $150 dresses and this jacket. Gorgeous stuff, I was drooling!!

  47. The first outfit is definitely my favourite, love the more edgy look, but I really like the skirt and would find multiple ways to wear it just like you have here.

fine! it is pleasant to me as you connected this skirt to a T-shirt!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I like both! You could wear the more conservative one to work and have a day-to-night look by switching out the jacket and the shoes to the other.

  51. Looking at some stuff at VS this week also. Was the coupon something you got in the mail or something you found online? Trying to save some cash on some boots since MJR is down for reno. Thanks J!

  52. The coupon was on the VS website, along the top of it. I would also check Retail Me Not!

  53. Adorable outfit.  I always love an edgy tee with something more polished.  I have a hard time finding tee shirts that are v neck or low neck.  Do you have the same problem?  Any suggestions are appreciated.  The two links to tee shirts are still too high neck for me...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yes Taylor I agree! I like F21 (try online for more selection/easier to browse), Gap and American Eagle for t-shirts.

  55. I'll do that.  I've been on the hunt for a while.  Thanks for the fast reply.

  56. I have been wanting a jacket like that for over 4 years now...love the outfit

  57. I hope you don't take offense to this but I was wondering what your height/weight is.  I'm considering the VS jacket too and don't know if I should go for the XS or S.  I'm 5'0" and about 115 lbs.  Thanks for any advice!!

    ReplyDelete
  58.  That's awesome - thanks for the update!  I may have to seriously consider that jacket, especially since you mentioned how nice the leather is as well.

    ReplyDelete
  59. No prob Shaina! I don't own a scale but at the Dr. in August I was 122 and 5'7" - and of course we can't forget that I have absolutely nothing "up top" so that is also why the XS fits. ;-)

  60. I am wearing my leopard print skirt and tshirt with black heeled sandals today!
