Today's Everyday Fashion: Options

Same outfit with no belt (left) and untucked for different body types (right)

Today's inspiration photo sparked my imagination to put together this monochromatic purple work look. I love the end result, and decided to show a couple variations of the same outfit - one without the belt, and one with the shirt untucked, which would work well for concealing your midsection and/or a curvy body type. A little multiple choice for you to pick which outfit would work best for you! How would you wear it?

  1. Seriously, LOVE this outfit.  Love the monochrome look, love the pop of pattern under the cardigan, love the neutral pumps.  My favorite is the first (tucked with a belt under the cardigan).  Wonderful!

  2. Amazing combo, love the colours!! ♥

  3. With out belt loops I could never get that belt to stay put right at the top of the skirt.  So I would opt for tucked in no belt or untucked with belt over the caridan so its ok if the belt slides up or down just a bit.

  4. Love those colors!

  5. Great color combo!  I think i'd do the tucked in option without the belt - I have a hard time keeping belt in place without beltloops - lol!

  6. I don't care for the shirt untucked, and agree with the previous comment of a belt not staying in place w/o belt loops. Any ideas?  So I am left with the no belt option.  I love how you pair together everything and the color combos are great.

  7. Just discovered your blog last week and I am obsessed!!!    Wish you could come shopping with me and help me overhaul my closet!   Love this outfit.....I'm a tab obsessed with purple as well!! :)   Love that you have affordable clothe - looks that are attainable for the majority of women!  Thanks!

  8. These colors are so pretty! I wouldn't have thought those two pieces would go, but the print top really ties them both together--I love it!

  9. It really struck me that the fourth one really shortens the leg length, although very nice looking.  I think I would like it it better with pants than a skirt.  Love your ideas.

  10. Love these berry tones together! I think I like it tucked it with the belt the best.

  11. Thanks Julie! That look takes a little bit of imagination - I'm not the best model for it, but if you picture it on someone who is top heavy, they would fill out the shirt much more than I do, making the shirt shorter than it is on me! :-)

  13. Here ya go Lynn! This is a link to my video that explains my belting method and how I get it to stay in place with not loops and without punching any new holes. Hope this helps! http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2010/11/video-how-to-belt-cardigan_12.html

  15. Love the purples. I think I'd do the tucked in version, but I'm on a tucking kick these days!

  16. Hadn't thought about that which is why you're the stylist and I'm not.  (smile and wink.)  And you don't look anything but amazing in anything you've shown.  Truly.

  17. Love!  I actually just bought a very similar skirt from Target for $11 on the clearance rack.  I was stoked when they had my size!  I paired it with a navy silk blouse (with the purple color and mustards) and a mustard cardigan.

I like the tucked in version w/ the belt the most.  It looks the most finished and put together for me for sure.

  18. I love all of them! Your version translated so well from your inspiration photo!!!

  19. When I worked in an office, I always switched up my outfits by tucking my blouse into my skirt or leaving my blouse untucked with a belted cardigan. Both are classic looks. I just love how you're not using boring black like I did!

  20. I love the colors, I really do; and I would wear the last one with the shirt untucked and the belt up higher but for my personal taste I would have a different colored cardigan I think. I think to have black to tie together my outfits so i would pair a black cardigan with it. I love all of your clothes!!

  21. I love this look! The colors are really pretty. I like both looks, for a more business look the tucked in one looks great.

  24. Love the colors! Just enough spring tones to squeeze our last few drops out of summer, but still so "third day of Autumn" appropriate :) You're site is so great, so glad I cam across it.

  27. Either the second or third look is my favorite, but I would probably wear it the third way :)

  28. For me, the hands-down winner is the first (tucked with belt).  I like the third look (untucked, belted) least.  I think the proportions are a bit off on that look.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thank you! The third look definitely doesn't work for my body type, but I wanted to share it to help people with other body types with another option! :-)

  31. I would wear the first look. But I really like how you tried different options for different body types, always thinking!

  32. Love the outfit and lovin the wavy hair! looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, that's exactly what's off about it.  It doesn't give you curves, it actually does the opposite.  But on a curvier figure it would look really good.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Both ways are very stylish! I really appreciate how you don't always take the photo literally and truly use it many times just for inspiration. I need to brush up on that technique. Anywho...great post and see you at Macy's!

  36. I love the choice of taupe shoes against the magenta purple.  Such a beautiful and cheerful work look.

I think all ways suit you.  Realistically, for my body type, I find the look with no belt would work best on me.  I love the look of belting over button-up cardigans, and I have tried it but it does not work for my body shape. coverupchic.blogspot.ca

  37. Hello, central Florida! wish I could join you @ Macy's to 'see you work' :)  Love this OOTD because of the deep, swirly blues and my favorite color, purple :)  I would personally wear it untucked without a belt because that gives me body pain issues - yeahhh, I've tried the belted look but it just doesn't work with my disabilities.

  38. It's so helpful seeing how you interpret your inspiration photos - I now understand how you can use a look for ideas instead of just cloning it :)
I prefer the top tucked with the belt, but as you said that's partly because that suits your figure the best and partly because it's how I would wear it best too.

  39. Hi J, sorry if this has already been asked but I was wondering if you know what is going on with MJR Sales? I was so sad to see just now it is closed. I know you work closely with them so hopefully you can give us some insight? Do you have recommendations for similar sites? Thanks!

  40. I love the choice of shoes with the outfit.  Beautiful colours!

  41. I love the first version, it's so pulled together.

I'm curious, you have so many rescources, how long do you usually keep clothing, do you have a " one in one out rule" and how do you keep track of what's in your closet?

If I accumulate too much I get overwhelmed and fine it even harder to put outfits together?

Love your blog and look forward to it every morning.

  44. Hi Melissa! Thankfully it's not closed, they are just moving to a new warehouse, and with as much inventory they have to sort, it's taking a little while! Should be back up soon. I don't know of any similar websites but would love to find some if there are!

  46. Thanks Johanne! I have tons of pieces from 6-7 years ago that I still wear and love. I haven't changed clothing sizes since college so everything still fits, which adds up to a lot of clothes! I have a huge closet currently and am only using half the hanging space, but I do go through every other month or so to get rid of some items. I have a photographic memory and could name everything in my closet right now if you asked me! ;-) I like to hold onto as much as possible (more options = more outfits) but I also agree that having too much stuff is BAD. I shot an episode of my makeover show on this subject that will be coming out soon. Claudia had so much stuff that she couldn't find anything and was missing all the adorable outfits that were already hanging in her closet. Hope this helps! :-)

  47. This is the type of outfit where............ if the person wearing it were, say, at a professional conference (or something similar) "presenting" to the attendees............ I'd feel inspired not only from listening to the content of her PRESENTATION............ but also from just lookin' at her truly  *l.o.v.e.l.y.*  OUTFIT, too!!

This is such a pretty use of very vibrant and glowing  c.o.l.o.r.s. ............ (yet somehow they're very calming and peaceful, too)............ in an outfit, J.!!

  49. Hey there! Love your blog and routinely use it for inspiration. Quick question. When a skirt does not have belt loops, how do you keep the belt where it is "supposed" to be? like in the first look? Mine always end up sitting higher, closer to my natural waist. Thanks!!

  50. Thanks Bri! Check out this video I did on belting techniques for keeping a belt in place without punching extra holes and no belt loops. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions after watching! http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2010/11/video-how-to-belt-cardigan_12.html
