Today's Everyday Fashion: Military Summer

Hope you guys had a great holiday weekend! I took full advantage of the perfect weather here in Orlando and spent the whole thing at the lake and pool. This outfit is the one time I got dressed, for a casual hang out on Sunday night. I wanted to wear the military trend, but a summer version to beat the heat. I originally tried my new Colin Stuart heels (pictured below) but they were a tad too dressy and didn't match the casual vibe I had going with my purse, so I switched to brown wedges instead (the heels would've looked great with a black clutch for a dressier occasion though). What shoes would you wear with this outfit?

ps. Catch me on national TV show Life Love Shopping talking about fall trends tomorrow morning on WE tv at  9:30 a.m. EST/8:30 CST/7:30 MST/6:30 PST.

Tank: J.Crew, $7
Shorts: Forever 21, old (similar)
Necklace: My Stella & Dot website, $138
Shoes above: Guess/DSW, $30 (similar, similar)
Shoes below: Colin Stuart/MJR Sales, $29 (similar, similar)
Purse: c/o Karen Millen, $235
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift
Rings: My Stella & Dot website $69 and $39
Bracelets: My Stella & Dot website $59 and $59 and $39 and $32
I would switch to a black clutch with these shoes.
1. NC2 shirt, $30
2. 6pm shirt, $16.99
3. Urban Outfitters shirt, $39
4. Forever 21 shirt, $4.80

  2. Totally off topic -- wondering if you selected the give-away winners for Conversation Pieces?

(& I absolutely love summer military!)  I have these olive green linen shorts, that I wear with a leather belt and bright colored tops (neon pink or hot lavender), gold sandals. Love, love!

  7. Wow, the Urban Outfitters Shirt is amazing! Anyway, I like the military trend and I appreciate the way you styled it for a hot summer night. It's cute and very comfy. I own a few military inspired tops that I wear with cropped destroyed jeans and cognac accessories.

  10. You look amazing!  The colour so works on your tanned skin tone.   How did you score such a gorgeous tank from J Crew for only $7?  What a deal.

I love the military trend and I have sported it mainly with army green bottoms this summer here: http://coverupchic.blogspot.ca/2012/09/summer-attire-dots-and-khakis.html

After seeing how you styled this top , Ithink I will be on the look out for one :)

  13. Love this look! I would wear it with flat sandals - but something cute like metallics with an ankle strap like these Sam Edelmans:

  15. Lucky in Florida! I live in Utah and pulled some of my fall clothes out this weekend to start assessing the situation. Excited to watch you transition some of these pieces to colder weather (do you have colder weather in FL?) and excited to wear my military jacket in a few weeks.

  17. Maura, it usually starts to get cold here in November. I have some trips planned up north this winter though and I also try to do some cold weather looks just for you guys up north, so stay tuned! ;-)

  19. Hi J! Huge fan of your blog, you've changed my entire outlook on clothing. :) Congratulations on all the upcoming opportunities! I have a question about this outfit, and I'm hoping you'll reply! I would not wear the top tank with the detailed pocket + the statement necklace. Am I wrong in saying no to this? Too critical/ OCD? Share your insight! O:)

  20. Hi J,

Why is it that the majority of your outfits are styled with very short shorts or very tight pencil skirts?  You must understand that the majority of the population are not a size 2, and therefore can't pull off these looks as easily.

  21. I'm a flat shoe person, so I'd probably wear my tan Converse with this. Cute outfit!

  22. Well she still has to dress to fit her body...besides, I've seen tons of outfits in the archive that have jeans or long pants or looser fitting skirts. She does live in Florida and it's summer...so shorts and skirts will probably be high on her list. This blog isn't meant for people to exactly replicate her outfits...you can take color schemes or mixing prints or fabrics. I'm a size 10 and I still love her blog for inspos for styling...recently bought an outfit that resembles an old one, but swapped out the pencil skirt for an A-line. It's not impossible to get inspiration from this blog if you don't have her body type.

    1. Well said. I'm not a 2 rather a 6/8 and I find all kinds of inspiration! Love this blog! It's my new obsession.

  23. Hi J! I just found your blog a week ago through Audrey at PuttingMeTogether.com. I have a quick question. Since we are approaching/in football season and a bunch of my family (my hubby especially) are sports fans is there a creative, fashionable way to wear sports attire/colors? Really appreciate your blog and would love your input. Thanks!

  24. Feeling your summer look and wishing I could be that casual today. Had to go to work instead :( Love the wedges with this look.

  25. Hi Cailean! I don't think this is OCD at all! :-) I actually wished the sequins weren't on the pocket both when I bought the shirt, and when I first put this outfit on. (I thought about cutting them off but I think there would be little holes all over the pocket.)

The beautiful thing about fashion is that there are never really any wrong answers. If you are happy and comfy with what you are wearing, then I think that is always a "win." I totally agree with you that the sequins look busy. But I also think they add a little element of surprise and make it more dressy. In other words, I think it works both ways and not wrong in the slightest if you wanted to go for a plain shirt! Hope this helps. :-)

  26. Hi Jessica! You have touched on my least favorite thing about this website - I'm my only model. If you check out my About, my ultimate goal is to have a fashion magazine/website, that is full of women of every size, shape, color and age. That's why I do the episodes of my makeover show and I'm actively working to make that magazine a reality right now. In the meantime, you are stuck with just me! :-) And that means lots of shorts (because I live in Florida, it is hot!) and pencil skirts (because that is my go-to work attire). (Pencil skirts work really well on curvy women too though!)

The spirt of this website is definitely to take what you see and make it your own, just like I do with inspiration photos. And just like Emily said below - I have lots of clients and friends who take the color combos and use them to create outfits that work for their bodies. Today's outfit would work just as well with an A-line black skirt, a full skirt, black jeans, etc. Feel free to sub in pieces that work best for you!

  29. #1)   Although I'm personally not a real die-hard football fan, per
se----(but I do like baseball, though!!)----your posts and guest blogger
    Lauren's post about
Gameday Outfits are just  *e.x.c.e.l.l.e.n.t.*, J.!!    I was wondering if
you think your readers might actually appreciate having............ in
your Table of Contents, under "How-to Style"............ a category
entitled, "Gameday-Inspired Outfits," (or something like that)??!!

    I
have two sisters and one niece in Education who (in the Fall) always
wear Gameday Outfits to their three schools, respectively;  and I know
they'd find having a "designated category" like that very useful!!

    #2)
By the way, I love the green sequins on your tank!!    (Green, in all
shades, is my fa-vor-ite color!!)    I honestly could maybe
see............ that Tiny Little Patch Of Sequins............ as being
the *impetus* TO............ go on the  H.U.N.T.  for olive-green
patent-leather heels!!    Or for an olive-green polished-cotton (or
satin) pencil skirt!!    Or for a metallic-olive-green leather
clutch!!    (One, or more, of these olive-green items would also look
great with your J. Crew sequin-pocket tank, too;  but probably *none* of these
olive-green items could............ EVER be FOUND, shopping-wise, though,
    haha!!)
