Today's Everyday Fashion: Boot Poll

Kate Bosworth looks hot! I didn't copy her look exactly (although, how cute is her dress?! shop similar here and here), but I dig the idea of wearing a loose-fitting dress with ankle boots, so I decided to give it a try. My outfit was originally intended for use in NYC, but I didn't wind up wearing it, despite being a fan of the hard and soft combo of silk dress + leather boots. Ankle boots are not everyone's cup of tea, so vote in the poll and tell me how you would wear it! :-)

  3. You look great! I just ordered a pair of ankle boots and I can't wait to style them!

  4. Ankle boots are awesome and you totally pulled them off!

Here is how I wore mine: http://www.beautyandbows.com/polka-dot-dress-grey-booties/

  5. My thing with ankle boots with dresses is that while they always look sort of hip I never find them to be very flattering and always end up sort of wishing they were a different more flattering shoe.  You've got the legs to pull it off, so I think that looks pretty darn good on you but would probably prefer the dress with something else.

  6. I wear my ankle boots with bare legs often - I think it really depends on the boots - they can cut off at a strange point making your legs look short but tan/natural colours work well as leg lengtheners - if they're black I think they must be sky high!

  7. I would totally wear ankle boots, if and only if, I had YOUR legs! I think you need some serious length to wear them, otherwise, they arent very flattering. They look like they were made for u and u look great!

  8. I just bought my first pair of booties and love them.  My legs?  Not so much.  So I am slowly working into it. Booties with tights for now.  Maybe by next year, bare legs.  A year ago I wouldn't wear a skirt so there is hope!

  9. Oh my... I love the boots, but this look is a total mess here of mixing 60's mod style dress, with 80's style boots and a blazer.?  I would only wear these boots with long flowy dresses, or denim vests over a floral dress, or denim shorts with a flowy boho top.  I am not a fan of this look at all J, but I give you props for trying!

  11. Thanks Nik! I totally respect your opinion, but I think this dress doesn't necessary have to be "mod" - it is all what you wear it with. To me it looks very boho paired with 70's inspired pieces like the boots and boho necklace! :-)

  13. I love booties but feel like they cut off your (and Kate's) gorgeous gams.

  14.  I don't feel as strongly about it as Nik, but I agree that the look is just a tad off. I think the dress has a sophistication that doesn't quite mesh with the boots.

  17. For some reason I'm really obsessed with the ankle boot trend (it just looks so cool!).  I'd LOVE some more outfits with ankle boots :D

  18. I think it's all about pairing ankle boots with an outfit that helps lengthen your legs, because sometimes I feel that ankle boots can make people look a bit "choppy". I am pretty short with muscular legs... dresses are harder for me to wear ankle boots with, but I rocked them with some short denim shorts last week (similar to your disney world outfit)!

  20. I just bought a pair from Fergie's line and I love them. They are so versatile. They have made me love Fall, because I get to wear them. I like how you styled it with the skirt and the color block top.

  21. I bought a pair (Candie's c/o Kohl's) about a month ago, but still have yet to wear them. I'm not sure what's stopping me. I just need to bite the bullet and do it. Maybe tomorrow!

  23. Actually, I think the boots give the dress an awkward, out of place look, like wearing tennis shoes with a skirt.  I do own ankle boots, but they aren't leather, so they seem less "abrasive" than these.  I also agree with the commenter below that it makes the look seem choppy.  I am only learning about fashion, so I might be WAY off in my assessment.  =)

  24. I like the ankle boots on you but I am not sure if I could this look off.

  27. I really love your boots! I'll be waiting for the weather where I live to get a little colder before I bring out my ankle boots so I can pair them with tights and dresses because I don't like the way my outfits look with bare legs and ankle boots. No clue why!

Oh and you're jacket was my inspiration for the mustard colored jacket I bought at Forever21 over the weekend! I always love your outfits. (:

  30. I love this outfit. I have a question about Friday too. Where in the Macy's is your event? It's a huge Macy's and I do not want to miss it! Thanks!

  31. Overall, I don't wear ankle boots routinely.  Living in Chicago, I opt for tall boots and/or change into shoes once into work.  I realize that question may be more about style than warmth/snow protection, so I think that is why they are not in my closet.  However, I am tempted by something like this: http://www.target.com/p/women-s-merona-kalama-shootie-wedge-assorted-colors/-/A-14068812

  32. That necklace is stunning, and is the perfect collar detail for that outfit!  I'm so short that I generally avoid ankle boots.

  33. I think that's the beauty of fashion JoEllen, there is never really a right or wrong! :-) Tennis shoes with a skirt sounds adorable to me! (and I'm definitely not a stylist either!)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yay! I'm going to be wearing this blazer tons this fall/winter!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Gizelle, that is an excellent question. I'm not sure where the event will take place (I'm thinking upstairs in the women's section), but I do know there will be a runway and Robbie and I will be co-commentating on outfits, much like on Fashion Police, so it should be pretty loud and easy to find!

  37. I love wedge booties! I got a brown pair last year that I will be rocking hard-core again this year. Short boots are way more practical in Florida, as it is often way too warm for tall boots, even in the winter, which is a bummer! :-(

  38. I love ankle boots, especially with fun tights now that fall has rolled around :)

  43. I'm confused so your not a stylist but your hire me section implies otherwise...?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I was curious and wondered if I had missed something, so I went and checked - the word "stylist" doesn't appear anywhere in my Hire Me section! :-) I am a journalist/content creator, and I have some great shopping and budgeting strategies that I share through many platforms. But I definitely don't ever call myself at stylist. Or think I'm any good at creating outfits for that matter!! That's my whole strategy - it's nice to hear tips from someone who is just like you and has the same struggles. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  45. you're not a stylist, but you offer styling services? I'm confused...

  46. Jacqueline, see response below! Thanks for asking! :-)

  47. I didn't use the word "stylist" as it pertains to you, but you offer "style" help. Call it a play on words if you'd like.

  48. A poll was a fab idea. It's nice to see other people feel similarly to me!

  49. Style help doesn't necessarily meaning creating outfits! The kind of help I provide is tips on shopping, finding good deals, deciding which items are most versatile. I teach women everything I can when I shop with them. I'm not looking to have personal shopping clients or people who want me to dress them! :-)

  50. speaking of boots, i believe you live in a pretty warm climate year-round, but for the rest of us who will soon be dealing with chilly feet, what do you suggest to wear to keep warm and stylish other than boots in the cooler months?  i have so many flats, but my feet freeze if i go barefoot and the outfit looks strange with socks.  any suggestions for warm, boot alternatives?  or just to have a variety of boot types?

  51. Carolyn, I totally feel your pain on this. I lived in Boston for 4 years and socks were definitely not optional a lot of the time. One of the trends in high-fashion this year that I'm curious to see if it will become more mainstream are high-top sneakers like these: http://www.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=359378850&pid=uid2641-1460879-79&utm_medium=widget&utm_source=Product+Widget Could be a fun trend to try!

  52. wow.. You looks exactly fabulous. I just love your leather boots.

  53. I like the wedge sneaker idea.  That pair looks good.  You would still have a heal, but it would be comfortable and warm.  Great with jeans and be able to pull it off with dress pants too.  Thanks J.

  54. I think you are awesome at what you do, wording or not.  Words don't define us, they simply help others understand.  I also see you as more of a writer/editor/fashion commenter who writes a blog to help women understand how to dress better.  Folks really shouldn't get themselves hung up on titles, it's how incorrect stereotypes are created.

  55. Thanks JoEllen! Great way to look at it, and even situations outside of this one.

  56. I'm so glad you did this post! I've been toying with the idea of getting ankle boots but I am a little conservative when it comes to fashion and usually get on the trends once they've been around for a while. Like the other Carolyn, ballet flats are not an option for me (cold feet, and flat feet make them extremely uncomfortable for me) but I thought ankle boots might be a good alternative when I don't want to wear tall boots... like for skinny jeans and some skirts. I think this confirmed that I should go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I live in a cold climate and am also a fan of flats! Try pairing your flats with skin-tone dress socks. It blends in if you're wearing pants, though this trick doesn't work with skirts and can be questionable with cropped pants.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I voted cute on other people, but I wouldn't wear them only because I don't know how to wear them! In fact I own a pair and have only been brave enough to wear them once, with jeans. I would love to see more outfits.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Love the whole outfit and the color combo! Those booties from Chinese Laundry are my absolute favorite pair! I wear mine all year long!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm so glad you posted these boots because I've been considering a pair to wear with dresses/skirts and tights this winter. I like them on you because of the heel. I'd be skeptical about a pair with no heel on myself because I'm afraid it would make me look stumpy. But just a slight, chunky heel looks just right. I think it's a look I'm gonna have to try!

  61. I am wearing my boots with a black and camel color block dress today for work.  I added my leather camel blazer because it is a little chilly in fl today.
