August Shopping!

Target online order

My shopping advice usually goes something like this:
  • Browse online before you shop, to get an idea of what is in stores and to prioritize your shopping trip.
  • Prices are generally way cheaper in retail stores than they are online though, so head to the mall and purchase things in person. (95% of what I buy is from the mall.)
Nowhere in my shopping advice do I say you should order a bunch of stuff online so you can try it on, and then return half of it. But that is what I did this weekend (*hangs head in shame*). Shipping was free, and I can easily return to both stores (Target and Old Navy). But I already know that I will return half the order, because the quality at both stores can be iffy and I anticipate feeling differently in person about some of the items. Not the best way to shop, but I'm baring my shopping soul today. Here's what I ordered:

Target Online Order
1. Mossimo woven shell, $14.99 - dying over the color!
2. The Webster ruffle tank, $12.48 - on clearance, and why I originally placed an order.
3. Merona pencil skirt, $22.99 - very cautious about the quality, interested to see it in person. I need a replacement for my H&M pencil skirt that is now a hot mess after one wash.
4. Merona striped skirt, $22.99 - love and plan to scope it out in the store (didn't buy it yet).
5. The Webster ruffle skirt, $14.98 - obsessed with the print, wanted to try both pieces.
6. Mossimo platform shoe, $10.49 - on clearance, and slightly out there but I love the color.

My grand total with a $5 coupon was $75.53.

Old Navy online order

Moving on to Old Navy. I received a 25% off coupon via email that expired that same night, I went to the website to browse, and wound up placing an order.

Old Navy Online Order
1. Orange shirt, $22.45 - love the color, but I'm already thinking of splurging for this silk version.
2. Striped shorts, $13.12 - I just died and went to stripes heaven.
3. Plaid shirt, $18.70 - I wear my blue version of this shirt to death, and plaid is a big trend for fall.
4-5. Striped dress, $14.95 - really hoping these dresses are as amazing in person, both would look great with sandals or with boots for fall.

My grand total was $90.03.

August wish list

After breaking down and cutting up my credit cards (j/k! I'm still within my budget), I also found these beauties online that I'm hoping to check out in person soon.

On My Wish List
1. Express shirtdress, $69.90 - a white dress has eluded me thus far and the belt comes off this version.
2. Limited striped shirt, $24.90 - oh just check me into stripes rehab and get it over with.
3. Express sequin shirt, $39.90 - love the art deco thing Express has going on, also love this dress.
4. Gap trousers, $49.50 - planning to add some cropped trousers to my closet this fall.
5. American Eagle skinny jeans, $29.99 - a dark pair of destroyed denim is on my wish list.
6. American Eagle tie-dye, $39.99 - get out of town with your crazy tie-dye self! dying to try these on.
7. Target cords, $20 - I love the yellow color these come in, too.

So there you have it. What do you love, hate, and already wish I would return? What is on your wish list this month?

Update 8/30/12
Target
I was disappointed with the colors of the Target items! The two skirts (blue + stripes) and the mint skinnies (last photo) were totally different colors than I expected them to be. The seafoam tank was gorgeous but an odd fit (XS was too small in the bust), and I loved the color of the shoes but they were showing too much toe (opening was too wide). I'm keeping the pink ruffle tank top but that is it! Two picks I loved in store (and bought) are these burgundy skinny jeans and yellow cords.

Old Navy
I wanted to love the striped dresses soooo bad! The blue + red color (see it here) was actually my favorite, but the fit was not good. XS was way too short, and S was baggy in the stomach area (not cute). The striped shorts are okay, a little more stretchy than I anticipated and summer is ending so I passed. Plaid shirt and orange shirt didn't knock my socks off so I will pass on those as well. Some items I loved in store (bought, not sure if I'm keeping) are this camel polka dot sweatertan striped top and denim jacket.

Wish List
The white dress is no longer in stores. I bought the Limited striped shirt. The Express sequin top was different in person. See here for my review of the Gap cropped pants. I passed on both of these American Eagle options, and bought these skinny jeans instead and love them!

  1. I am loving that orange Old Navy shirt. I might have to get one! But, I will leave you to the horizontally stripped shorts. I do not need to put my butt through that trauma. :-)

J, the striped pencil from Target is great (I have it!). I aloso just bought the stripped blouse from Limited and the cords from Target! All great too!

Love the tie dye denim, so fun!

  3. And my Target has the striped skirt on Clearance for $12.48!!

  4. I actually do the big online order/return half (or more) method pretty frequently! It works as long as your have a retail store where you can make returns. I tend to do this when I want an item that is available only online. Sometimes, I'll even add extra items to my order just to get the free shipping, knowing those items will go right back to the store the second my order arrives. But beware -- this method works ONLY if you're committed to making timely returns!

Ahhhhh now my wish list has grown like crazy ;) I love the Target cords on your wish list. I think I'm going to hit up target tonight and try them on. Skinny cords are hard for me to find the right fit!

  6. Good news... you will be thrilled with the quality of the Mossimo pencil skirts.  I have bought several of them in the store and I always check for new colors every time I go.  The colors are awesome, they fit great, and they don't wrinkle like crazy from sitting all day at your desk.  A++

  7. I bought the same Old Navy striped dress but in a navy blue and red combination.  They should be arriving soon, I will keep you posted!!! :) I pictured myself wearing it with my pair of cognac boots in the fall and same in the winter but with stockings and a sweater on top.  I did order the dress in tall (I'm 6'1") but it might turn out to be too long...fingers crossed!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I have the Merona Striped Skirt and get compliments on it ALL THE TIME! No one can believe it's from Target!!

I also bought the black & white striped ON dress! I am 5'8" and bought it in tall because their stuff always shrinks or the sleeves are too short!

  9. LOVE your target picks, especially the colorful striped skirt and sapphire sandals!  Target has some amazing stuff... I can't wait to see more of their designer collaborations =) As for your Old Navy order, I wish I could wear stripes.. They make me look flat and large =( Maybe you could do a post on how to look slimmer while sporting the pattern =)

  11. I've heard good things about the pencil skirts from Target so hopefully you'll like yours!  I don't own one...yet.

Also, I have a similar striped dress I bought last year on clearance from Express.  Glad to know I was ahead of the style curve on that one!

Oh, a thought.  In regard to your post yesterday you mentioned that if you are saving a lot of inspiration photos with the same color scheme or items that's how you decide what to buy.  Maybe you could show us some of the inspiration photos that led you to purchase (or wish for) these items?

  12. i have that EXACT striped pencil skirt from target and i LOVE it. the quality is amazing and it seriously is so awesome. i love it. i get compliments on it all the time.

  13. Hi, new fan of your blog. I love all your great ideas.

I just got that Old Navy silky camp blouse in the purple/pink in the store last night! The colors are great, the weight is good enough that you don't have to wear something underneath it. It's not silk of course but it looks like it will wash and wear well. However, it is fairly long, especially since I usually have to get ON petites. I'm trying to figure out how you do the artful partial shirt tuck that doesn't look like you work in a bank or something if I don't always want to wear it out.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I own the stripped target pencil skirt. I was pretty impressed with the quality (target can definitely have a range in quality) and I absolutely love the colors. I hope you like it too!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Definitely bought two pairs of the Target cords yesterday... I really hope they fit!  (I, too, did lots of online shopping knowing I will have to return half of it... I blame you and your dang cute outfits!)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have the striped shirt from The Limited and it's amazing!! I've worn it with teal skinny jeans and a black blazer with black pumps. In plan on layering it underneath cardigans/sweaters for fall

  17. Cute stuff!

Does Target put out new items a certin day of the week?  I always here people talking about, "Target Tuesdays".  Do you happen to know anything about that?

  18. love this blog about August shopping. I find it sometimes can be a hard month, because its still very hot outside but you can't resist all the warm, cozy clothes for the fall. Speaking of stripped dresses, I had a 30% coupon for the Gap and I got a beautiful stripped dress. ITs black and white. I can't wait to belt it and wear it with my new fergalicious motorcycle boots. Happy Blogging.

  19. Love your Old Navy order, so tempted to go today and check what they have. I tried the Target cords at the store last week and did not like the fit, but I am too skinny and weird, the only jeans/pants that fit me well are from Hollister and they have to be made in Guatemala (the tag has to say made in Guatemala,) otherwise they don't fit me well (very frustrating!) The colors are ok, but very different from the online pictures, I have to say that the yellows are my favorite ;)

  20. Brooke, I can't tell you the last time I bought clothing at Target (I don't think the quality is high enough). I pinned this little gem awhile back though. No idea if it is legit tough: http://pinterest.com/pin/227150374925930688/

  21. Thanks for the heads up on the camp blouse, and welcome to the blog! :-)

  22. Thank you Kimberly! One trick for wearing a striped dress or top is to wear a dark cardigan over it, and button one button, making an hour glass shape or "cut-outs" over the stripes. Stripes can actually be very flattering on all sizes!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yay! That is hard to believe at only $22 a pop, but I couldn't pass up trying out that color. Thank you for the heads up.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree Nikki - you've got to be diligent about making returns if you use that method, and some other downsides are that it takes up a lot of space on your credit card, and I personally feel guilty if I don't keep at least one thing from the order, so it can lead to not-so-great purchasing decisions. It certainly is an easy way to shop though, since you don't have to physically hunt down the items and you can try them on in the comfort of your own home. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Who, me?? Haha. I never encourage shopping ladies, just browsing. ;-)

  26. Erin, I had to think for a minute because other than the tie-dye jeans (inspiration here - http://pinterest.com/pin/227150374925672445/) I couldn't think of any particular inspiration photos that inspired these purchases. I have more than 1,500 photos saved and a 80% photographic memory, so I usually just wind up buying stuff and realizing later what inspired me. I also don't like to share too many of my inspiration photos up front, so that the content is new to you guys. Check out my Pinterest outfit inspiration board though - I spy a few look-alikes like the striped skirt, striped shirt (Solange Knowles) and the tie-dye jeans I linked to above! http://pinterest.com/jseverydayfash/outfit-inspiration/

  31. I love the Target striped pencil skirt!  I'm going to have to go try that on today.  ;)  I did try on the Target skinny cords when they first came out and they did not fit right.  I'm not sure if it is the way they are made or what...I'm hoping that Old Navy comes out with some colored skinny cords.  I have few pair from the last few seasons that I love.

    Thanks for sharing!!

  32. I have the striped Merona skirt and love it! It's pretty good quality although I'd recommend NOT cutting the pockets open. I liked the way it lay better when they were still sewed shut.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm looking forward to seeing how you style the platforms from Target. I have them and I love them but they make me super tall (I'm 5'8"). I am determined to wear them before the summer is up. :)

  34. Love the Old Navy striped dresses! I wish I could do 95% of my shopping at the mall too, but my mall doesn't even have a Gap. So if I don't want to look like a walking billboard for New York & Co (the store I shop at the most that my mall DOES have... oh, yes, I have often worn outfits that are head to toe NY&Co.) then I must succumb to online shopping. The next nearest mall is a good 45 minutes away, and that doesn't work too well with 2 little kids at home. I just have to be smart about the online shopping: take advantage of free shipping deals, and pay close attention to sizing and how things fit. After a few trial and error online shopping experiences, I've become much better at knowing what size I wear from what store. And that has reduced the amount of returns I have to pay to ship back significantly!

  35. I'm interested to know what you think of the quality of the target pencil skirt - I've been eyeing it for its bright colours (and great price) but am wary of buying target for work clothes! For me, I want a nice thick fabric that holds its shape well - no wrinkles from sitting all day, and not too much stretch/jerseyness. Do you think the skirt is worth trying out?

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's so funny that you posted this, because I literally just did the exact same thing at Old Navy last week--I even ordered the same black striped dress and bright yellow version of that plaid shirt (you know what they say about great minds... :) Can't wait to see how you style the tie dye pants (if you get them)--I love them but have a hard time picturing them working in my closet! Oh and I have that Merona pencil skirt in black, love it, wear it constantly, have washed it a bunch and it's still great!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have that Merona striped skirt and it is in heavy rotation in my wardrobe. I agree with SydneyFitz about leaving the pockets sewn closed.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have the sequin art deco shirt from Express and I love it! You can try it with white shorts. It looks great!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. funny- i just placed an old navy order too! I'm on a mustard yellow kick and got a cardigan in mustard from Old navy. I saw the yellow cords at Target too and they are definitely a possibility for me too!
If you get the colored cords in mint or yellow what would go with these? Would a burnt orange be too much with mustard? I guess I'm being a little tentative with color!

  51. I have to say it really depends where you live.  If you live in a city like Chicago where sales tax is really high, shopping online is usually cheaper.  Especially if you know when stores are offering friends & family discount, free shipping, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I believe that sales tax should be exactly the same online? Unless you are buying from eBay, and in that case you are supposed to report it on your taxes and pay your city's usual sales tax that way.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Absolutely! Planning to update this post as soon as I get the packages!

  56. Lauren, if I get mint jeans or cords I plan to pair the same things that I've been wearing with my mint shorts (tons of outfits posted so far!). They even look good with fall colors like camel and olive. As for mustard, same idea - I have yellow shorts and a yellow skirt that I love, but would love some pants for really cold days when I travel this winter. Mustard goes great with neutrals like camel, leopard, a blue and white striped shirt, turquoise, and pretty much any shade of blue!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Very true, I thought about this when I wrote the post. I know not everyone has access to the mall and in that case you gotta work your post office instead. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I answered this but it looks like my comment disappeared so I apologize if you wind up getting this twice! You can pair this skirt with any color from the skirt - an orange, brown, navy or ivory top. I also wanted to do a white/ivory top with a navy blazer and brown boots for fall!

  61. Being deployed I've been limited to ONLY ordering online. I like your idea of researching online first and then going to scope it out. I can't wait to get home and try on all of my online purchases... it's like a mini christmas for myself!

    ReplyDelete
  62. How are you so organised with shopping?? I sometimes do the check online first then get really annoyed when they don't have the item I want in the shop so end up buying it online anyway.

I tend to go with a general shopping list i.e green jeans/trousers, do a bit of research of a few shops online (to see if they have the style of clothes I'm after) then go mad trying stuff on in the shops I've picked.

    I want those turquoise shoes!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I would & have done the same thing...total impulse shopper :( (zappos is a especially dangerous place for me, name brands and free shipping all year round, What?!)  Looks like you got a lot of cute pieces, but girl....tie dyed jeans? Don't do it!!

  64. thanks so much for replying J! i did just get a leopard shirt to go with some mustard pieces but I am definitely going to try it more with blue now and try some more color! I think I am going to check out that striped skirt from Target!

  67. I'm notorious for shopping online and heck even in the stores and then returning half of it. I just hate trying on things at the mall. This is why I tend to stay towards brands that I know my sizing and can then purchase base on color/style.

I do agree with the questionable Old Navy quality! I've seen so many bloggers include pieces from ON in their wardrobe so I broke down and bought a few things (great prices but returned all but one thing). Sigh.

Thanks for all the great advice and humble slip ups in following your own pillars. It feels nice to be in good company!

  69. I tried on the ON stripped cotton dress today and loved it! So comfortable! I am broad shouldered and the top was a little wide around the neck/shoulders, just FYI . I also have the Merona stripped skirt. Nice fit, better than usual quality for Target (and on clearance!) If you get the skirt, I'll be interested to see how you style it.

  70. J- The Limited striped shirt is boxy.. I am returning mine! :(

    ReplyDelete
  71. I wish I could have gotten the striped Merona skirt.  Loved it, but Target doesn't make sizes small enough for small petites.  I also have the ON shorts, which are decent quality, and the striped dresses arrived today.  Kind of on the fence -- the quality isn't bad for the price, but I ordered them along with striped dresses from Gap and BR (way more expensive), and they pale in comparison.  I know I'll wear the Gap ones for years, so overall, it's worth a higher price.  Even though I buy ON clothes, I pretty much figure I can't more than a season or two out of them.

  76. update on the Target striped skirt- I went looking for it and it was on sale for $16.08! But the quality was there but it was still a little large on me and wasn't a fitted pencil skirt like I was hoping for and a little bit longer. I am straight through my hips and was a little disappointed it didn't work :(

    ReplyDelete
  77. I just got that Limited striped blouse in the mail...it's really cute but the color is more off white than I thought it would be. These are great choices!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I bought the Target striped skirt -- love the colors! But, I took it to my fall closet to find outfits and it seems too bright and summery. I have a thin sweater in the rust color but it looked heavy against the skirt fabric. And, the blue stripe is more royal than navy. Maybe I'll have to save this for next summer.
Please post pics if you decide to buy the skirt. I know you'll know what to do!

  87. I am with you on all accounts! I did find a AMAZING striped dress at Target. It's this dress but striped with a contrast zipper on the back, the zipper is only like 3 inches long I am not even sure it really works, just for looks. It isn't online anymore and I know why, it is hella cool. I size way up because I didn't want it to be fitted. I think it is supposed to be a body con dress. anyways, go look around the junior area.http://www.target.com/p/xhilaration-juniors-boatneck-dress-assorted-colors/-/A-14100370#?lnk=sc_qi_detaillink
