Today's Everyday Fashion: Aviators

I re-created this (gorgeous) blush and green outfit all the way to down to the aviators (even though I feel a tad silly wearing sunglasses in a blog post!). I also wanted to ask the same question I posed on Twitter - where do you shop for sunglasses and how much do you spend per pair? I have two pair - these were $50 from Banana, and I have a $5 pair from H&M. I want to up my sunglasses game and am not sure where to start, so I'm looking forward to your comments. Also, a heads up that Stella & Dot just released the new fall line which means tons of stuff on sale (woo hoo!). See below for my favorite deals.

Raybans are always a classic staple in my sunglass collection! I love the wayfarers but they have tons of great styles!  Great recreation of the outfit, Love it! Youre such an inspiration!

  3. LOVE this colour mix!  And the shape of the blouse is so great too.  I own a few different pairs of sunglasses and love my aviators which were £4 from H&M - most of my glasses were about £5 from cheap places but I have one pair of Ralph Lauren which I bought duty free and I completely love them.  I do think it's good to have at least one really nicely made, quality pair - duty free would be my tip or TK Maxx :)

  5. Great outfit!  I saw your question on Twitter yesterday.  I just can't spend lots of money on Sunnies - I lose them or break them.  So I watch for sales at H&M, F21 or other discount places. I'd rather spend my money on shoes!

As far as sunglasses go, mine are prescription so I can't help much.

Wow this look is almost identical! I never spend any $$$ on sunglasses since I don't take care of them. I never keep them in the case and they end up sitting in the car or in my purse. I've seen some bloggers find great deals at Marshall's or TJ Maxx.

Good luck hunting for a new pair of sunnies!

you did such a great job with this inspiration photo! I would have never thought of pairing those colors together!

    http://allthingsprettyandlittle.blogspot.com/

    ReplyDelete
  12. Love those two colours together! I usually go for cheap sunnies from forever 21 or H&M, it is inevitable that I will break at least one pair a season!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Love the color combo. The way I look at it, expensive sunglasses are really an investment to protect your eyes, especially living in Florida.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The most I have ever paid for a pair of sunglasses is $12 (target), but most of mine cost around $5. I find great pairs at Claire's, Rue 21, Forever 21, and Charlotte Russe. I always buy the cheap ones because I am terrible I keeping my sunglasses in one piece. They always end up getting crushed in my purse, smashed from being sat on, or broken by one of the dogs, so I refuse to splurge on an expensive pair because I know they will get destroyed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. this recreation is PERFECT! i love it! and i don't think you look silly in the aviators... i think you look fab!! :)

  16. IMO, the expensive sunglasses just aren't worth it. (This coming from someone who will save up for a $400 handbag. Ok I only have one of those, but still.) I bought an expensive pair one time, and they got scratched, so what could I do? Also, the styles change pretty frequently. So I ususally buy two $20 pairs per year, treat them a little roughly, and replace them when they break. This has been great for me! :0)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Whoa! You're recreation is so spot-on I had to do a double take!

As for sunglasses, I usually buy mine at Target.  I don't like to spend more than $20 per pair just in case I lose them or they get scratched up.

  18. Hi J! It's a while I am thinking about buying the serpent bangle, so I am so excited to see it on sale. I have seen you wearing it almost all the time. I was just wondering about the care it needs, should I avoid water, keep it in a plastic bag and so on? Thanks so much.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Great job recreating this look. I like your sunnies. Until like two years ago, I always wore no-name sunnies, because I just didn't care about the brand. Then I fell in love with ray ban and I own two ray ban sunglasses (aviator and wayfarer) since then. Each cost me about $110 and I love them. I got my last pair in NYC in a random store, can't remember the name. But I take good care of them and I think it's worth investing in a really nice and timeless pair of sunnies.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ray-bans are the best! I own a pair of the new wayfarers and classic avaitors. the new wayfarers are smaller and flater a womans face better than the classic wayfarers. I bought mine for about 125$ and if you take care of them they will last forever.

    ReplyDelete
  21. This post cracks me up because I have those same aviators from Banana and I also have a second H&M pair that were $5 that I wear to the beach or when I think there is a chance they could get scratched.  I think $50 is plenty to spend on sunglasses since what's it style changes all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So so so so cute! I love this :) I usually buy my sunglasses at TJ Maxx, I like aviators and Steve Madden styles and don't usually spend more than $10. I would spend more but I always lose or break them so it isn't worth it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I understand your sunglass dilemma!  I hate spending too much cause I always accidentally lose them or break them.  I would recommend Nordstorm's Rack.  I found a pair of Michael Kors sunnies there last August for $25 and they came with a nice sunglass case (to help reduce the possibility of me accidentally breaking them :) ).  You never know what treasures you will find at The Rack!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Does anyone remember La Femme Nikita, where she had a large selection of sunglasses hanging from a string near her door?  I always thought that was a nice little addition of some quirky personality.

I like to have a selection of inexpensive sunglasses on hand, but I keep them in small bucket.  I get mine from Target, NY&Co, Kohls, or anywhere I find a pair that looks right.  I am having a hard time with that right now because the trendy over-sized glasses swamp my small face.  Whenever I find a reasonably-sized pair that looks good, I buy them.  I stick with plastic, because the metal glasses have a nosepiece that grabs and pulls on my hair when I wear them on top of my head.  So your aviators would be right out for me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Smith makes some cute ladies sunglasses, and the quality of the lenses is amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I shop for sunglasses at Sunglass hut. I use to have 10+ pairs of cheaper sunglasses in all different shapes and sizes. Then I discovered Polarized sunglasses. I highly recommend getting a pair. There is no glare and makes everything so much easier to see. Plus Sunglass hut always has great sales, especially when you can catch a buy 1 get 1 free sale. It pays off in the end to invest in a nice pair of quality sunglasses. Or ask for some as a gift, thats how i scored my Ray bans.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ray Bans are the absolute best! I've had a pair of classic aviators for 5 years and I own a new polorized pair. The new pair was around $200 but I adore them. I also have a large pair of Prada glasses that are fun. Sunglasses are one of the things I will spend good money on since I wear them so often. You did a perfect job recreating this look!

  28. i have a pair of ralph lauren aviators that I live in! They have gold accents that go great with my blonde highlights :) I find that when I buy more expensive sunglasses I am much more careful with them and take better care of them so they last awhile...I got mine from Solstice which has a great return policy (90 days) and they will fix a scratched lens for free!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm decently careful with my sunglasses, and considering that I wear them every day, I don't mind splurging for a pair. My current two are Rayban New Wayfarers and a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs tortoise shell sunglasses.

I find that they really are made with much better quality materials, which makes them last longer in both look and feel and durability.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Solstice and Sunglass Hut have awesome glasses, mostly designer, and all relatively expensive. Michael Kors has great glasses for women, and so does Gucci. Happy shopping!

  37. I would say Sun Glass hut honestly, They have a good sale section and always have deals. But if you want a better deal try checking out on the of outlet stores at the Prime Outlets or Premium Outlets. My fiance and I got a pair of Ray Bans for buy one get on free! And they were a regular selling item :) Mine were there aviators with purple frames!  Best deal I have ever had!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I lost two polarized Raybans in the last 5 years, I absolutely used to love those but I do not think I can afford to lose another $300 pair glass. So now I just pick anything under $20 - atleast I do not have to worry about losing it. Ofcourse the quality is bad but the style is fab!

    ReplyDelete
  39. ray ban wayfarers & classic aviators are my go-tos forever & always. you can't beat the price & quality, & they'll never go out of style!

    ReplyDelete
  40. My current pair of sunglasses are from Bulgari. Living in So Cal, I wear my sunglasses all year, almost every day, so paying over $300 for sunglasses doesn't seem over the top.

    ReplyDelete
  41. FIRST: I can't believe that you and I both did a pink/green post today! Great minds think alike!

Regarding the sunglasses, I once "invested" $25 in a pair (reg. price $50, but were on sale + coupon), and despite how I tried to take really good care of them, they still managed to get scuffed up. I couldn't dream of spending more than that. I had a really nice pair from Kohl's for $15 which were the best pair I've ever had... until they went missing. Sorry that I can't be more helpful than that! Good luck though!

  43. I have a few pairs of sunglasses and honestly, most of them are from Target!  The only nice pair of sunglasses I've ever owned are a pair of Ray Bans and I got them through a deal site- I believe it was groupon but may have been living social.  I refuse to spend hundreds of dollars on sunglasses!  I can't take care of them well enough to drop big bucks...

J, a question about Stella and Dot.  I'm thinking about signing up to become a stylist...when you signed up, did you just do the $199 package and get $350 worth of free product?  They have those three different packages now, and I am not sure which one is the best deal...plus it says you can earn free jewelry once you become a stylist (how do you do this?) and that you can get items for 50% off...I guess I'm just trying to figure out the best way to do it when signing up to get the biggest bang for my buck.
Also, have you had a good return so far in your business?  How many parties do you have a month etc?
Thanks so much for any of the help you can provide me!

  46. Hey J,
You look great. I visit your site every day to see what fantastic outfit you've put together for us!
As for sunglasses... I coveted a beautiful pair of Cole Haan sunnies (100$) for a year before I finally saw them for 20$ at Ross. Then I saw them on overstock for 20$ each and bought 2 more pair. I love a bargain!
Good luck with the sunglass hunt.

  47. Loving the blush and green combination!!! Gorgeous. I love aviators, too, but they just don't fit my face shape. :-( Maybe I haven't found just the right size/proportions yet. I am, however, totally in LOVE with a pair of sunglasses from Tiffany & Co..

  50. Vintage shops have great sunglasses. I have one pair from a vintage store that I got for $5. I also got a pair of sunglasses from ASOS for $10. I refuse to pay more than $20 for shades because if I do, I will inevitably sit, step, squash or otherwise destroy them.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love Coach shades. Sometimes I get them at my eye doctor (!) and sometimes at Coach and lastly at Nordstrom Rack!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I used to only buy junk sunglasses from Loft or Gap because I didn't take care of them in college or grad school. Then I found out that since I am a teacher, my health insurance would cover eye wear. I don't wear contacts or glasses, so I could apply my benefit to sunglasses, so I got 2 pairs of designer shades. Sadly, insurance no longer covers that benefit, and left me in love with high quallity sunglasses. So now I shop Marshall's for Kate Spade and Ray Bans. On Black Friday, Kate Spade outlet has great sunglasses deals too.

  55. I have an obsession with sunglasses, I have a few good pairs that I spent more on (or got as gifts) and then I have like 10+ that i spent anywhere from $5-10 on (I tend to break/drop things a lot). My favorite place is bleudame.com; its awesome they have a ton of in style sunglasses and they're super cheap. I've stopped shopping at forever21 cause they always come crooked or broken. But my all time favorite pair that I wear daily was $10 from Nordstrom BP- I just had to replace the last pair that I got a crack in after 4 years and they had a pair really similar, I hope I get another 4 years!! Good Luck J!

  56. You did a great job recreating this look! I buy sunglasses anywhere that I find a pair I like as long as they're cheap. $20 is a lot for me on a pair of sunglasses. I tend to break mine a lot or drop them and scratch them or sit on them so I don't like to spend too much money on them.

My son usually breaks them or I get careless with them so its not worth investing and I still get lots of compliments since they're just as cute as expensive ones! Question: do you always shop in outfits or do you shop by individual pieces?

    ReplyDelete
  64. jseverydayfashionJuly 9, 2012 at 9:52 PM

Not sure I've ever bought a matching top and bottom on the same day, is that what you mean? This shirt is 2 years old and the jeans are recent - so I would say I definitely shop in pieces. I always have a running wish list - things like green jeans, mustard skirt, etc. - that are often on there because I'll save 20 pictures of yellow skirts, get the hint, and add it to my shopping list. Hope this answers your question! :-)

  75. I also own a pair of Michael Kors sunglasses (TJ Maxx $22) and love them. I'm not very gentle with my sunglasses so I don't like to spend too much for them. The Michael Kors glasses look quite expensive but were not. I think you could find pretty nice sunglasses for a decent price a TJ Maxx/Marshall's. If you are ever in NYC my favorite store is Century 21 (a TJ Maxx/Marshall's times four), you can find high end brands at good prices there.

  76. I LOVE aviators.  I typically won't spend more than $20 for a pair of sunglasses.  I buy them at Target, or Charming Charlie's typically anywhere between $10-$16.  I recently bought these tortoise glasses: http://www.target.com/p/mossimo-round-sunglasses-tortoise/-/A-14075553 from Target, and I also have a great pair of big black ones from Charming Charlie that I love (I can't find them on the website though) here's something similar: http://charmingcharlie.com/cc/product/productDetails.jsp?pId=3000329966&sId=11398000010&pgName=searchResult&pdpTrail=

  83. I tend to spend $20 or less. Any more and I'm constantly afraid I'll lose them. I have a $5 pair.  I recently found a $150 pair and they are very very similar to ones I just bought (I found the pair in a box of baking sheets while unpacking. I'm very confused how they got there.)   I have recently discovered I have a wider head than most because many sunglasses squeeze my head while my friends try on the same pairs and they don't hurt their heads at all.  Do you have any weird things like that when trying on sunglasses?  My mom said they never squeeze her head but the stems are never long enough for her. I said the stems are always an inch too long on ones I try on.  Weird.

I did spend $50 on sunglasses 2 days before I found the $150 pair.  I'm afraid to leave the house in them. I like my $5 pair because who cares if I lose them. (I have not lost a pair of sunglasses ever so I don't know why I worry.)

  84. OAKLEY!!! If you have an Oakley Vault near you it's even better because it's like an outlet! They have a pretty good variety of styles and prices. Plus, the glasses are high quality and last a long time if you take care of them.

  85. I spent $150 on my Oakley's and don't regret it.  They are wonderful sunglasses and protect my eyes a hell of a lot better than the cheapy ones.  I've learned that there are some items worth paying extra for and sunglasses are one of them.  I love my Oakley's so much that when I found out I needed prescription glasses, I spent $220 on lenses for the frames I have.
