Today's Everyday Fashion: Prints

I tire of prints quickly. Stripes and polka dots have more staying power, as do printed bottoms - but after wearing a printed top a few times, I am usually... bored. I avoided that feeling with this floral top by pairing it with lavender jeans after being inspired by the photo. I threw on the same yellow cardigan and shoes I wore the first time, so I also tried a blue cardigan to switch things up. I think the end result is a great work look for a casual office, and this feels just new enough to wear the top again. Do you tire of prints quickly? How do you make them feel new?

  1. My favorite of this outfit has to be the pants!  I am loving colored pants/jeans at the moment!

I completely agree, I tend to stay away from floral prints.  I tend to lean towards more of strips and dots as I feel like they can act as more neutrals.

  4. I love this look. A print top and cardigan is one of my go to combos. I get bored with prints too because they are so distinct that it's hard to make them feel different, but your idea of switching to a different color of cardigan helps. These are certainly looks I'd wear.

  5. I meant to ask, what size is your ON tank in this photo? I think we wear similar sizes, and I'm thinking of buying one. The ON website has mixed reviews about the sizing (some say it runs large, some say it runs small).

  7. I do get tired of prints quickly too (and I'm pretty picky about them in the first place), so I usually try to look to inspiration photos from mags and other bloggers to get fresh ideas on how to style them. For example, I have this same floral tank, and now I have work great new ideas how to wear it thanks to this post! :)

  8. Are there any great sales now? You've mentioned before that the best times to shop are the day after Christmas and the end of June because stores get new shipments in. Any idea if this is true for JCrew or Ann Taylor?

  9. I too get tired of prints very easily and usually they just sit it my closet till it's time to clean it out and donate it! I tend get my print fix from scarves they seem easier to mix for me.   You did a great job mixing and matching those colors together!   I do like it with the yellow cardigan the most.  I'm a new follower and been looking back at your posts and you really have a great eye for putting colors together!

When I get tired of a print on top, but want to get my wear out of it, I tuck it into a high-waisted pencil skirt and throw a different jacket/sweater over top (much like you did with the blue), because then it just peeks out and a little of some prints can go a long way.  Or if you went with something bold paired the first time (like the blue sweater and lavendar pants), next time try it with all neutrals like tan pants, white jewelry and change the shape of the top by adding a chunky belt.

  12. I don't own a lot of prints but the ones I do I just style in different ways, layered over or under other pieces - makes them feel new again like you say.  Love these jeans!

  15. I was just having this debate about prints! I love them of other people and have a minimal amount myself, but never find myself wearing them. I am a stripes/leopard or polka dot girl all day, but get bored with prints and then stop wearing them all together. Why is this??

  16. I love the yellow pumps!! I don't really tire of printed tops I guess as much as I just simply don't find my self buying them much. I will buy anything that's striped though!

  18. I really like the shirt and pants together, but I'm not a big fan of the yellow shoes, though. I also don't like the yellow jacket. The blue one is prettier to me. But overall, I'd probably add a simple white or light grey blazer to go with the rest of the look. And I think your nude-brown wedges would go with this look as well.
I also don't tire of prints quickly because I feel there are endless options on what to wear with prints. I always add different blazers, jackets or different types of jeans and style it up or down.

  19. I think a great way to make a print feel new is to really take a cue from the colors in the print itself. It can look incredibly different to pull out the blue in the top like you did with the cardigan, than if you say paired it with a pink blazer or something. And of course tucking or untucking a top can make a big difference as well!

    Love this post!

  22. I'm a total print lover. In fact, I'm wearing a floral print dress from Dillard's right now! It's a similar print to yours but much much bigger blooms.

  24. I have been looking all over at ONs near me for that shirt, I love it! Your post today finally convinced me to go ahead and buy it online, since it's on sale. I love that the print has so many colors you could bring out by pairing it with different pieces. I've had my eye on that orange sweater from H&M, too...I might have to pick it up next time I'm there!

Thanks for always sharing such fun combinations--I can't tell you how many compliments I've gotten since I've started using your blog as inspiration :)

Thanks Mara! My mustard cardigan is actually a couple years old. I think I know which sweater you are talking about at H&M right now and it's definitely not the same color, but the beauty of this floral tank is that it will go with just about any color in the rainbow! :-)

I have that top and absolutely love the color combos!  I've mainly worn mine with my turquoise jeans, but I really like how it looks with the lavender!

  27. I love both the colour combos! I dont tend to find myself getting over prints too easy as I have a lot of clothes in circulation (weak throwing-out skills), but it definitely depends on the print!

The floral print is cute! We like to change up the color of cardigan as well, to help refresh prints.
