Today's Everyday Fashion: Big Bang Theory

I'm wearing my new shirt and skirt at my retail consulting gig today! I was immediately obsessed with this top - its reminds me of Sheldon's fun shirts on Big Bang Theory (love that show!). The top is only available online so placing an order was a must, even though I prefer to shop in person. The skirt was on my June wish list so that was an immediate yes, and this printed yellow top on sale rounded out the order and got me to free shipping. I had a 30% off coupon so the total was $93 (I will add this to my budget post at the end of the month). Are you a Big Bang Theory fan? Would you wear this geometric look?

  6. Hi J! I love this outfit and BBT!  I might need to go look for that skirt too,
it's awesome!  Question about how you list your prices..You put down $39 for the
skirt (the price it is showing on the website), so you didn't include your 30%
off coupon in your price? And how do you deal with BOGO or $15 off of a certain
amount, etc? I guess for a monthly budget, it doesn't matter, because it's all
clothes.  Just curious how you break that out when you price it.  Love your blog
so much! I have to check it every morning!

  7. Now this is a top I like. I looks nice with the skirt. I'd love to see it with some colorful jeans as well. It might even be fun with plain old black. It's certainly a versatile top.

  8. Yes- and I think you mean, geometric. :)

  11. Big Bang is the only sitcom that I record to ensure I don't miss an episode. I love the outfit - especially the skirt.

  12. Hey J!  I work at The Limited so it's always so fun to see our pieces on your blog!  This outfit looks fantastic!  These are two pieces that I've loved individually but even seeing them all the time, would never have thought to put them together!  Thanks for some inspiration!

  13. As usual.. love the shoes. But I don't think the top really goes with the skirt. I would have tried a cool pair of skinnies instead I think. But the geometric print is really cool.

  15. Love that colorblocked pencil skirt - it's been on my wish list for a while and now that it's 30% off, I will be buying it! :)

  16. Hi J-- I'm a new reader, so I apologize if this has already been covered! I have a job interview for a full-time staff job in University Admissions.. should I follow that old rule about wearing nylons and no open-toed shoes? I would have to BUY nude nylons and I doubt I would ever wear them again. It's not exactly a "corporate" environment (and I have tan little half marathoner legs, if that matters!) ;) Thanks for any advice.

That top is so fun and cute on you! And, I'm adding that skirt to my "to buy" list this weekend with the sale at Limited.com.

  19. Hi J,  You look great everyday!  Yay...I had purchased the yellow ruffle blouse last week so now that you have it I'm super excited to see what you do with it.
And, btw, today I'm wearing and exact replica of your "blue monochrome outfit"!
Thanks for getting dressed for work everyday so much easier!!!

  20. Wow, J, you look great! These are two pieces I would have never thought of putting together! One question: online, the reviewers state that this top is boxy and short. Would you agree? Did you have a hard time keeping the top tucked in, or did you just hike your skirt to keep it in?

  21. Hello,

I LOVE this outfit and a huge fan of that show (and you!).  My question is this: I read reviews on the shirt and a few mentioned it was really short. It looks great tucked into your skirt but wanted to know if you felt comfy all day or were you needing to adjust it a lot? Thanks in advance!

  23. I love Big Bang Theory, although I don't know if I would ever say I got fashion inspiration from it. haha. I've thought about dressing up as Amy Farrah Fowler for Halloween. Does that count? haha

  24. I'm not J, but I work at a University, so I figured I'd give my opinion in case it'll help.  I would consider a person less professional if they came to an interview with open-toed shoes.  Universities are a bit more casual, so if you get the job you can probably get away with wearing them to work, but you should be a little more formal for the interview.  And there are plenty of cute closed-toe shoes, so it won't be a huge sacrifice to go close-toe!  :)

  25. What a great combination!  I haven't gone to Limited in years, but I'll have to check it out now.

That's a great Halloween costume. I hate Howard's clothes on that show, but I think Sheldon's shirts are fun. They appeal to the nerd in me, I guess.

Thanks Stacey! I think if I had been sitting at a desk today, the shirt would've stayed tucked in. But I was really active - reaching up on shelves, dressing people, etc. and the back popped out of my skirt a lot (it is shorter in the back than the front). Definitely planning to sloppy tuck it with some shorts though, and in that case it should work fine!

Thanks Kate! I wouldn't say it's any boxier than most shirts usually are, but the back is kind of short. I  think if I had been sitting at a desk today, it would've stayed tucked in. Hi Steph, welcome to the blog! :-) I second Rose below that close-toe shoes are a must. I would also wear either a collared shirt or a blazer, but you don't have to do both. And then either dress pants or a skirt that reaches your knees on the bottom. I don't think you need nylons though. I think that requirement has come and gone, so no worries there. Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

Thanks so much Lauren! I list the price I paid. They must've changed the price on the website this morning, because when I bought the skirt it was full price and I used a 30% off coupon code. When something is BOGO, on the receipt they usually do the math for you, so I use that number. Hope this helps! :-)

  35. May I ask what size you bought in the skirt? I have thought about getting your skirt in magenta and black, but I don't have a Limited near me so I have to order online. I'm about your height/size/weight, and I didn't know whether to get a 2 or 4. Thanks!

  36.  Steph, I know J already gave you tips (which were great!), but I thought I would put in my two cents :) I worked at UCF in admissions and I wore a skirt with a blazer for the interview. Admission offices tend to be more laid back, but I was really happy I wore the skirt suit for the interview because after I got the job I noticed that my boss and the other Deans in the office usually dress pretty professional (pant suits, skirts/blazers, etc). Also, definitely wear closed toe shoes and no nylons. Once I got the job though I started dressing more laid back and wore open toe shoes. Good luck!

Thanks Jamie! I like shopping in person because fabric is so important and it's hard to tell online what something is really going to look like! It's also cheaper 95% of the time.

  43. I am a careers instructor at a technical college in Wisconsin. Most resources state to dress a step above what you would wear on the job. Most admissions specialists at our college dress professionally. I would suggest to definitely wear a dark colored suit (grey, black, or navy) if possible. Closed-toed shoes are a must...as mentioned my many of the posts!

J, I would love it if you devoted a blog topic to interview outfits!

  50. Online shopping is fun but in most cases what you see - online - is not what you get.  I bought some super cute shoes off a trusted website and when I got them the plat-form was way higher than practical and the heel really slippery.  They've never been worn out of the house.  Also for months I was stalking these heels online, I was walking past the shop the other day and stopped in to try them on, not good.  They were (again) way too platformy and I almost fell off them.  Who is making these divinely impractical monstrosities!?

  51. I used to work at the Limited.  It depends on the fabric.  The cotton ones tend to run a little larger than the "plain weave" which is their pant fabric.  On the other side the specialty fabric skirts tend to run a little smaller.

  52. I love how the different shapes of your clothes perfectly match together! And i love watching Big Bang Theory (Sheldon singing with Leonard's mother is the best moment in that show ;))

  59. this shirt would sell much better if the limited paired it with the skirt like you have versus their image with a pair of jeans....
mmm here is an idea, what bottoms would you wear with the shirt?  for dinner or work

  60.  what would you pair with this color block skirt... I got from the limited

    would florals work?!

  61. I agree that the jeans are not a cute look with this shirt! I have tons more ideas for how to wear this shirt though so stay tuned! I showed it for work here, but I want to wear it casually and for a night out, too. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I would do anything geometric - polka dots, stripes, and any color-blocked tops. Florals could work, but I love the idea of playing off the rectangle shapes below with some shapes like circles or more "boxes" up top! :-)

  63. so elegant! you put together seems so effortless and true to herself.
