Today's Everyday Fashion: Soft Neons

This is what I wore yesterday! I spent the afternoon at my retail consulting gig - putting together outfits from the new arrivals to use in an employee lookbook. (It was way more fun taking outfit photos and using the employees as models. Being the model is not my favorite!) Unlike many of my pre-planned outfits, I threw together this look right before I left. The soft neon colors blend well together, and I'm afraid the photograph isn't doing it justice because these colors look great in person! That said, I love this outfit, but I know neon isn't for everyone, so tell me - would you wear this look?

  3. I love this look!!!  I have red hair however, and the pink is not a good color on me.  Can you suggest another color to wear with this skirt?

  4. LOVE it - you always look so put together! I need that skirt :-)  Question, you say you got it for $25 but online it looks more...did you have a coupon?

  6. I love the necklace and top together, but the yellow skirt is too much for me personally...it reminds me of pink lemonade and lemonade together (I much prefer pink lemonade!). I just clicked over to the Etsy store where you bought that neckace though, and I love their stuff!

Sarah, I got this skirt a couple months ago and it as on clearance - it hasn't been available online for awhile now. No coupon tough, just found it in the store for $25. (prices in the stores are usually way better than online!)

This is my 4th look with this skirt, and I have many more coming up! Here is one with a blue shirt. I honestly think pink looks great on redheads though! :-) https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=438346576191084&set=a.324855397540203.100240.120030604689351&type=3&theater

  11. I'm wearing neon, but casually.  I have a neon orange tech t-shirt I got from Target that I wear to the gym, and a straw & neon bag.  I haven't worked neon into my professional wardrobe yet, but I'd probably stick to small doses.  I don't want to spend my entire day discussing my clothing with my coworkers, and they already love to comment when I wear something bright.  It gets old after the third identical "wow! your shoes are teal" comment.

Speaking of the gym, I'd love to see what you wear to workout some time.

  12. Speaking of neon, my sister had a pair of neon-print shorts from the 80s which she finally stopped wearing a few years ago when her boyfriend complained.  I just sent her a neon tech t-shirt and matching sport bra from Target, with a note that the items have an expiration date and I will take them back from her at some point so she can't wear them for the next 20 years.

  15. I love the neon colors, but I'm a bit skiddish about putting two together in the same outfit. I think I'm too pale to pull it off. I love your outfit, especially the blouse.

  16. First I love love love that outfit.  I wouldn't have thought to wear nude shoes with it before seeing it on you.  I will now.  I tried that top on a couple of months ago, but didn't get it and have been regretting it ever since.  Thanks for link because the last time I checked they were out of it in my size, but today it was there so I ordered it!

  17. Separately, those are fun pieces! Put them all together and BAM! Awesome outfit! I'm particularly fond of that necklace.. might have to bite the bullet on that one ;)

  18. I have a similar skirt from jcrew that I love wearing, but I can't wear neon by my face.

  19. You wear this look so well!   The pink is bright but not necessarily neon .... its a super flattering color on you!  pippa

  20. I would totally wear this color combination for non-work stuff, but for my workplace it's too much.  One bright piece is all I can get away with, and that already makes me more bold than my colleagues!

I love how you use necklaces to pull together multiple colors.  I'm going to have to do some accessories shopping.  Any tips on finding nice belts?  I swear I've been looking for a yellow skinny belt for 5 years and still no luck.

  21. I have to admit ... the title "soft neons" made me laugh because I though, "is that even possible?" But yes ... yes it is, and these colors are lovely!  I would definitely try out this outfit, but because I'm a redhead might switch the top out for one in the blue/aqua range.

  22. I LOVE this top and am considering ordering it online....may I ask what size you bought?I am curious how the sizing runs as they don't have many sizes left.Thank you so much!Love your blog!

  23. I know you're asking J, but I wanted to chime in b/c I bought a great yellow skinny belt off of amazon $13 as well as several other colors.  I've been looking in stores for years with no luck so I was super excited about my yellow. Several had free return shipping if it didn't work.

  24. Andi - that's a great tip!  Can you share more info?  Which did you get, and what was the sizing like?  (I hate the S/M/L sizing for belts - I wish they would just say the inch range!)  Thanks!  (J - I hope you don't mind our mini-belt-conversation in your comments! It's inspired by all your great skinny belts!  :) )

  27. I have the same question. I was wondering if your top is an XS or an S. I'm about your height, weight, and size, J, and I typically wear an XS in Limited tops. Common complaints on thelimited.com are that the shirt is 1) extremely see-through, and 2) huge. So I thought I'd seek out your input before making a decision on this top. Thanks, ladies!

  28. I bought this one in honey yellow  http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Beautiful-Elegant-Leather-Milidee/dp/B006I92XTS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1336592746&sr=8-3

I bought size medium and from end-to-end the belt measures 38” with the tightest hole hitting at 30” and the last hole hitting at 34” (so there is a 4” overhang).  I also bought some of these http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Adjustable-Skinny-Shipping-Medium/dp/B0052T0TS2/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1336592822&sr=1-1
in medium (although my seller is listed as “direct premium buys LLC”) in medium and they are maybe ½ inch larger than the honey yellow one.

FYI: I got them to fit exactly, not to do the neat loop around J does. Not sure how they would work with that, but you’d have to go bigger for that. I’m pregnant and wanted to belt a couple of dresses just under my bust and above my baby bump so I thought it would look best if fit rather than looped. I have Prime membership with amazon. NOt sure if that makes a difference, but they were all free return shipping.

  32. I would totally wear this!  I LOVE pink and green, it's so spring/summer and fun!  The nude shoes and purse totally balance the brightness of the garments.

I settled for a size S and it's huge! I normally wear a XXS/size 0 on top, and never tried on any other sizes so unfortunately I'm not really sure how it fits. :-/ Sorry I can't be more help!

As for being see-through - I can see what they mean - it kind of has a sheer look - but the top is so "loose", and has so many folds, you def can't see anything underneath.

I bought my patent yellow belt from Forever 21 for $5. Looks exactly like Banana Republic's same belt for $40-50. Exact-ly!!! I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the items at Forever 21, but belts are one thing I love there. My exact belt is sold-out, but right now Ann Taylor has tons of bright colors, so I would check there. And Gap is my other favorite place for belts!

Also, here are links to 150+ yellow belts online: http://www.shopstyle.com/browse/belts?fts=belts&fl=c4

I wear neon non-stop when I'm casual! :-) A hot pink or yellow t-shirt and jean shorts is my uniform in the summer. I also wear neon a lot to work out. I'll consider doing a post sometime, thanks for the idea!

  46. The soft neon colors of your absolutely  *l.o.v.e.l.y.*  cotton candy pink and lime green outfit just seem *so close* to a............ SONIC® CHERRY LIMEADE............ that, (while I'm reading your Blogpost and Reader Comments), I'd simply love to have a Cherry Limeade to sip *right now*, (haha)!!

  47. Love it!  I am having trouble finding a good "bat wing" top or dress (or whatever that style is called  :D   I've seen a lot I love in adds and in your pictures but every one I've found in a store looks like they just sowed some extra fabric down the side.  Maybe I'm just being overly critical when I look at them in person.  Maybe I'll see if they have your Limited version in store to check out.

  48. I love the neon look, but I've been hesitant to wear it yet because I'm not sure if I can pull it off with my skin tone. But if I do, I think I'm gonna bite your style and balance the look with neutral heels and a neutral handbag. You always do a good job of visually balancing the color in your looks. Great outfit!!
