Today's Everyday Fashion: Change of a Dress

I tend to get bored more easily with dresses, because they can be harder (although not impossible) to wear in "new" ways. That's why I got excited about this inspiration photo from Harper's Bazaar. It inspired me to pair my old orange-red dress with a bright blue cardigan, and the unique color combo made it feel new again. It's a simple change, but when I wore it for church and errands yesterday, it certainly didn't feel like the same old frock. To see two more tips for getting creative with a dress go here, and tell me - what are some ways you make an old dress feel new again?

  1. Very cute! I have an orange dress I got from Old Navy but it's more of a sun dress, longer and made of cotton. Wondering if I can spruce it up. I love the sandals, too!

  3. It's so funny reading yesterday's post then todays - your hair is so different (I think I love it most the way you have it now)!  I love wearing dresses with shirts tied over, with shirts layered under, tucked into jeans, tied up shorter or, like I did in my post today, worn low as a maxi!  I think there are so many options with dresses, it's just a case of finding out what they are!

  4. I like dresses so much because they are so easy, so I don't worry about trying to make them "different".  If I'm going to work, I generally throw a cardigan or blazer over them.  I love the color combo on your outfit.  I'm going to have to try it with my own stuff.

Thank you Fifi! :-) I love all of your ideas for wearing a dress. And I agree my hair looks much better this way (I'm natural now, no more blonde highlights!).

  16. I rarely buy dresses for that reason (although they are great for summer travel), but I do try different cardigans and shoes in unexpected colors to change it up.  You had a great winter poast with a green dress that encouraged me to wear some winter dresses differently, too. I think that's when I learned I HEART J's blog.  Very cute, today.

I missed your big anniversary.  I hope you ate cake!  You deserve it!  I think it would be very difficult to come up with near daily outfits so different from one another, but you pull it off.  Great job and I hope you have many more.

  18. I'm a sucker for a pretty dress, but I often find myself wearing it the same way over and over again. I usually try to switch up the belt, cardigan, accessories or shoes though! Great post. Always love seeing what great outfits you come up with everyday!

  20. Ok, I've been checking out your site for awhile, & never commented but I feel like I need to now :) I love your style & your blog! As a mom and fellow believer I like that your looks are cute, conservative (& never frumpy), on trend and budget conscious. I like that I can check your site out without feeling like your looks are unattainable or that they wouldn't work for a "real" person. I love your use of accessories and I have been applying them to my everyday outfits. I can't imagine how much work and effort you have put into your site, but please know that it has been a blessing and a great resource.

  24. I wore one of my dresses today different from how I normally do.  I wore tights (it's winter here) and a chiffon scarf with it and it looked like a different outfit!

  25. I agree! (although for me it's my future husband who knows that I will be taking care of our budgeting ;) Thanks, J, for showing all of us how to be creative and try new things outside of the box without breaking the bank. I can't wait for the fall (my favorite time of year) when I will be teaching Pre-K and Kindergarten- I've created Pinterest boards just for that, but also one that includes my favorite outfits from your blog. Thanks so much!

  26. Love this post. I have an orange dress from Old Navy that I bought for $7.50 but have yet to wear. With your inspiration for how to wear belts and flats with dress' I just put together a really cute outfit to wear today.  I am in my 40's and love your blog, and the dress you wear. But I am more interested in outfits with longer hemlines and flats.

  28. Just wanted you to know I replicated this look today to run errands around town. I purchased the Old Navy red dress in your post and they had a cute little aqua cardigan on sale, too. I paired it with turquoise sandals and jewelry, though. I'll go for my brown wedges the next time. Love, love, love this color combo!
