My May Budget

1. Gap cobalt shorts, $28
2. Gap tribal shorts, $30
3. Limited pink jeans, $40
4. Love 21 silk dress, $33 (similarsimilar)
5. Forever 21 orange top, $12
6. H&M swimsuit, $20 (similarsimilar)
7. Nine West leather sandals, $60
8. Ann Taylor leather clutch, $30 (same pursesimilarsimilar)
9. H&M neon necklace, $4 (similar)
10. H&M leather belt, $18 (similar)
11. Forever 21 pink belt, $2 (similar)

Grand Total = $252*

I didn't actually go shopping this month. I did, however, manage to not make it out of the mall without buying something for myself! Between four trips to the mall for work (three personal shopping clients and a day of retail consulting), I scored all of these deals. The goals I set this month were pink jeans, colorful shorts and flat sandals, and I successfully crossed all three off my list!

1. I shared my secret of buying multiples in this post. I love my cobalt pencil skirt so much, I decided cobalt shorts were also a smart addition to my closet.
2. This print is bright neon in person, and I'm like a moth to a flame when it comes to neon. Gap also made these same exact shorts last summer and I have them in white and a navy print. I love the fit and fabric so much, I wanted more pairs this year!
3. So excited to finally have pink jeans. I originally wanted blush pink, but after getting lavender jeans, I went for a bright, neon pink (blush felt too similar to lavender). I used a coupon to get 50% off the full price in the store.
4. I've been buying tons of bright colors lately and this neutral dress felt like a welcome addition. It's also 100% silk, so for $33 it's a steal.
5. I have a similar blue top from F21 (it's the one I'm wearing in my profile pic) and love it, and this orange version is a glowing neon color in person... so I couldn't resist. ;-)
6. I have a H&M tribal bikini from 4 summers ago that is my absolute favorite. It's made it through three cruises, countless snorkeling and water sports, and is finally starting to show its age. This one is a very close replacement so I snapped it up!
7. My favorite brown sandals are dying. I can't wear them in public without feeling embarrassed, so I purchased these. I think they were worth the investment since I will be walking in them tons and wanted something with high-quality leather that provides plenty of comfort.
8. I put this on my wish list two months ago (per this post) and just happened to see it in the store on Wednesday, marked at 70% off. $30 for a beautiful leather clutch? Yes, please!
9. A neon beaded necklace to layer with other necklaces.
10. My favorite leather belt is almost 5 years old and it's marked up pretty bad. This one is really similar, and for real leather $18 is a great deal.
11. I've had my eye on a neon pink belt at Gap for ages but didn't want to spend that much. This one at F21 was a dead ringer and only $2, so I went for it.

Did you score any amazing deals this month? Anything on your wish list I can help you find?

*The total is $277, minus a $25 credit I had from returning this dress to Forever 21, which equals $252.

  1. Great finds!  I love all the colors and especially the neons :-)  I took advantage of the J Crew deals this month :-)

  2. I have been DYING for some cobalt jeans!!! Searching and searching. I will find a pair here or there but they all fit like a second skin. And it seems most of the skinnies they sell now fit better on smaller sizes. Especially the ones from Target are REALLY tight. I found a pair at Kohl's by Rock and Republic that I liked - but I couldn't bring myself to spend $80 on a pair of pants that I don't know how long they'll stay in style. (I'm a cheapskate when it comes to shopping haha!) So yeah, my hunt continues. :) :) i love the deals you grabbed this month!!

  3. That Love21 dress is so cute - wondering about the length though...their dresses are usually so short on me!

  4. I really love that color block dress from F21! I feel like I never score good stuff from there!

  6. I'm going to Vegas for memorial day weekend and I'm looking for some cute / sexy dresses for the weekend. I've never been to Vegas (not sure if you have either) but I'd love any advice you have / ideas on what to get!

  7. $2 belt?!?! Those sort of finds make my day! That is, if I hadn't already bought it a month ago at full price lol. Which just happened to me at Old Navy. ($30 shirt I bought my bf is now $1.47- uggh) I love that orange top- great summer color- and would actually go with any of those bottoms? Versatility= score! Have a good day!

  11. The dress is pretty short. Nothing crazy like my lol-worthy aqua dress I had to return, and Love21 tends to be a little longer than the F21, but it's still pretty short. Since I don't work in an office, I will still be able to use it for "work" though - a fashion or styling event. :-)

  12. Two years ago when I worked in corporate marketing it was $250, for awhile after I lost my job it was $100. The past couple months I haven't set an amount, but instead kept a ballpark based on my income that month and also if there was anything I "needed." Almost half my budget this month was spent on replacing things I wear to death, so I see those as more of a "need" rather than just buying to buying (which I never recommending doing, anyway). I've done a budget post every month for the past year, so you can see alllll the details if you want. :-) They are archived in my Table of Contents under "Budget":

  14. I totally agree! $80 for "trendy" jeans sounds like too much. ($80 for classic jeans, I would go for though.) Have you tried Urban Outfitters? (get 10% off with code SPRINGIT) http://www.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=265450045&pid=uid2641-1460879

Delia's also seems to have great colors, but I tried some on last fall and they seemed to be pretty stretchy (if I can see the shape of my knee caps, I won't buy the jeans). You could also try American Eagle - I got mine there, and I think they still have them in the stores. They are pretty thick, although I wish they were a slightly more vibrant blue. Good luck! :-)

  15. I recently bought a pair of (blush pink & yellow) skinnys from F21 with the zipper down the ankle, I love it!! :) I also have the same orange top, it also comes in 3 different colors and I got them all! Love 21 at F21 is my favorite collection and that dress is really cute. Cute bathing suit i'm having diffculty finding the ones I want at H&M :( But I love all your May choices! :)

  16. I love those sandals! And I love the way you plan your shopping trips for the month, thinking about what you need in comparison to what's in your closet. I need to be more strategic with my shopping1

  17. Love it! I never seem to have good luck with jeans at F21. And I had to work at finding the swimsuit at H&M. My first trip they only had about 8 pieces left total, so I wound up with the bottom and no matching top. I went back later and they randomly had a top in my size, score! :-)

  18. I think I need those cobalt shorts!!!! I love that color so much and already own a pencil skirt and skinnies, and I love your idea of getting different pieces in the same color so the outfits are easy to put together, so I clearly need the shorts too :)

  19. Ugh - I NEED to set a budget and really stick to it ... self-discipline isn't my strong suit, and I have such a hard time saying "no", especially when I fall in love with something.  Most of my shopping falls into the bargain shopping category so it doesn't get too crazy, but still.  I didn't score any super deals necessarily, but did find a couple items that I had been desperate to find at a not-designer price ... specifically a mint pleated skirt, and a nautical-inspired skirt. Thanks for sharing your finds!

  20. I just found your blog and it is totally inspiring me to rethink the way I buy clothes! I feel like I'm always buying a piece here and a piece there that I think are cute without thinking about mixing and matching--it never goes with anything and I end up wearing it once! I LOVE your idea of planning purchases for the month and creating similar outfits using different pieces (like the red pants vs. red shorts).

I also love the way you embrace trends without buying all super-trendy pieces so you can rewear things for multiple seasons. I am always frustrated at not being able to afford the designer versions of very trendy items, but I never really thought about buying simple pieces from inexpensive stores and putting them together in creative ways. I just made my own wishlist from some of your ideas...it might have to include those cobalt shorts too, love those! This is a little gushy, haha, but I just wanted to say thanks! :)

  21. I LOVE these pink jeans-think I am going to go and pick them up today!  And I know exactly which brown sandals you are talking about that are dying because I have the same ones and am going to have to replace them this summer too.  Cute stuff, as always, J!

  22. Ohh you got some great things this month!! I need to pick up some shorts- those cobalt ones are so cute!! And I've been wanting neon belts- I can't believe Forever has them for only $2!! Making a trip there soon! I got the best deal ever in April-- an adorable mint mini skirt from LOFT that because of a huge sale they were having ended up costing me $11!!

  23. Thanks Abby! Let me know what you think of the pink jeans. I love, love the color - the fit was just a tiny bit off up top ,but I'm thinking running them through the dryer to shrink them might help. ;-)

  27. Love the pink jeans. I tried on a pair last week but they looked horrible on me because they were too pale and I almost looked like I wasn't wearing pants.

  30. FYI - Express has buy one get one 50% on colored denim through the weekend.  I've been eyeing some colored skinnies, too, but haven't decided if I will get enough wear out of them.

Hilary, thanks for the tip! I'm in love with the powdered blue color at Express, just waiting for the right price! :-) Can you wear them to work? I think that would make the difference for me, in how much I wanted to invest in that trend.

  33. I can wear jeans to work (major perk!), so perhaps I should just get creative and go for it (and keep coming to your site for ideas)!

  34. Yes, I would definitely recommend giving them a try in that case! They can look really polished for work actually, like w. some nice pumps or a blazer. I would just get one pair and see how you like them first. You might wind up like me, wanting them in every color! :-)

  38. I just bought those cobalt blue shorts today! :) I was wondering, do you have suggestions on what to wear on top with colored shorts/pants (like the blue shorts)? I feel like I'm wearing the same white/black plain tanks with all of my bright colored bottoms! I need to switch it up!
