Today's Everyday Fashion: My Giant Clutch

That's one giant clutch you have there.

Sometimes fashion is silly. I've been on the hunt for the perfect turquoise clutch since last summer and stumbled upon this one at ASOS for only $35. Thinking it was "the one," I excitedly placed my order. But when it arrived I was surprised by it's massive size. (Okay, now I can see that it was a tad big in the photo online, but I was excited okay?!) I love the color combo in today's outfit and think it's a fun way to dress up a plain t-shirt, but sadly the clutch is going back in hopes of finding a similar purse, only smaller. If you have a clutch this size then I not only give you mad props for being able to pull it off, but I also offer up some exciting tips for alternate uses below. Or maybe just to put a smile on your face. ;-)

Giant clutch: ASOS, $35
Shirt: Gap, $5 (similar)
Necklace: Aldo, $15
Plum jeans: c/o Ross, $13 (similar)
Shoes: Michael Antonio, $48
Rings: LOFT pink ring $11, My Stella & Dot website $49
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift
Bracelets: Banana Republic $10, My Stella & Dot website $49

Alternate uses: 1. cover your bum if you wet your pants. 2. shield your face from incoming debris.

Is it bad that I want all 6 of these?

1. Zappos turquoise clutch, $64.95
2. Macy's turquoise purse, $60.99
3. Amazon turquoise clutch, $74.99
4. Ann Taylor blue clutch, $98
5. 6pm turquoise clutch, $55.99
6. Lori's shoes turquoise clutch, $68.95

Update: I just ordered #2 (fingers crossed it's the right size), and I'm also hoping to find #4 on sale soon!

  1. It's a grown up trapper keeper!!!....That can also double as a stadium seat cushion at a sporting event.  Love the color though!

  2. Haha - this is so cute!  I bought a pink clutch from ASOS a while back and it was enormous when it arrived too...so I returned it.  But, my fave turquoise suede clutch from them is just the perfect size! :)

  3. I LOVE your plum pants...I'm skeptical of wearing skinny jeans sometimes because they tend to always be stretchy and cling in the wrong places. Any brand you suggest?

  4. Very cute and love the color, but you're right, it's too big! Kinda defeats the whole purpose of a clutch. Although, this would be a cute bag to hold my folder that goes home with me everyday from work.

  5. Hahaha, I bought the SAME clutch and returned it due to its massive size!

  6. At some point I think people need to stop calling them clutches and start calling them slim file protectors!

  7. hahaha i love it. that's awesome. hilarious story! i had a similar thing happen to me once when i thought i had ordered a necklace that was larger than it actually was - it came in the mail and was TEEEEEEEEEEENY tiny!

  9. It seems I am a weirdo - I like the giant size! Ordering now, or you can just ship me yours! LOL

  10. I love it Meghan! As I said, mad props to you. And if they sell out before I ship mine back, I'm happy to send you mine. :-)

  11. Oh yes! I've been a victim of teeny tiny jewelry syndrome before. I think the internet should come with an "items are not the size they appear" warning sometimes! :-)

  12. File protector = another excellent use for this bag. :-)

  13. Great minds... make the same shopping mistakes? Lol.

  14. Love that idea Kelly. It could be a great laptop cover, too!

  15. I love these suggestions haha! Stadium seat cushion... that's great. :-)

  16. Nikki, it's not so much a brand that I look for, as a certain type of material. I stay away from the really stretchy jeans and look for a skinny jean in thick, mostly cotton feeling material. Also - if I can see the shape of my knee-caps through the jeans (happens ALL the time), then I won't buy them. The thicker material is usually good about that though, and in general is going to give you that slim silhouette without showing every lump and bump on your body! Hope this helps!

  17. Ha! Being excited can do that sometimes. Lol. Love the colors together, though. :)

  18. Good gracious that bag is huge! I have ordered their clutches before and I got one that is quite a bit smaller than yours in a mint color.

  20. you could always use it as a table and like...eat your lunch on it

  21. Haha, nice.  Sometimes it is definitely different than it appears online! I actually love the massive size and I think you are completely pulling it off!... Plus I always live the motto "Go Big or Go Home" ... haha ;) The color combo is great!

  22. Your alternate suggestions cracked me up! I think an ipad cover and portfolio holder are good ideas- that immediately came to my mind. :)  Even though it's large, I still think you pull it off well!

  23. Nice post and I love the envelope clutch!  It is a great color for you and I love how it looks with your necklace!  I so need an envelope clutch in my wardrobe too!!!  Have a great day!  xx

  24. You know, I've been looking for a pants-wetting clutch! Sometimes it's just too much of a bother to get up and go to the restroom. :-)

  25. Hey J! I just love your watch and was hoping to order one. Is this the same one you have? The Amazon one you post is much more gold.

  27. Annie, I would go by style # - mine is the exact one I link to, it's the MK8077. I didn't see a # on the Nordstrom website though? You have to be careful because the exact same watch comes in two different sizes, and it's impossible to tell online unless they include the style # (the price are the same for both). Mine is technically a men's watch!

  35. That combination of colors is so eye-catching! Just beautiful.  And I think you totally pull that clutch off, but understand wanting a smaller one.  And a quick question about clutches ... when you carry one, what do you put in it?  My normal wallet, makeup bag, etc. would make huge bulges ... do you just take credit cards, and tiny makeup basics?

  36. Even though the clutch is huge...I love it and I love all of the color you are wearing too ;)

  38. Too funny! I hope you find the perfect clutch because the colors in this outfit are wonderful.

  39. Yep, I just switch to the basics. My phone, keys, sunglasses (if it's day), lipstick, eyeliner, my license and credit card. It's kind of nice traveling light sometimes. :-)

  43. This is one of my favorite outfits on you! I must say you're looking a lot thinner these days.
Have you changed your fitness/diet regime?

I am in love with your outfit. I was surprised how so many color pieces could all be incorporated into one outfit and still go together. Looks awesome !

  47. Hey, this is the one I have, it is smaller but also a bit more smoky turquoise.

  48. I love your blog, you have motivated me to go beyond my normal jeans and tshirt and look for hidden pairings in my closet.. thank you! Question- are you wearing a V-neck tshirt here (like the one you linked from the Gap?). If so, what do you do to turn it into a tank?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thanks Shaunna, I'm so glad you like the blog! My shirt came like this, but I love the shirt I linked to and think it could be easily worn in this outfit as well!

  51. J! Today on Hautelook Urban Expressions has bags and clutches in multiple colors, including many different types of turquoise, for only $22-45! They looked so much like what you wanted that I had to leave a comment to let you know.

  52. I love your color combos!  What brand are those jeans?  I'm having the hardest time finding colored skinny jeans that aren't jeggings. (I will keep your non-stretch/less-stretch tip in mind next time I go looking, but I haven't found any like that yet!)

  53. Thanks Rose! I just checked the tag and it says U-51. (I've personally never heard of that brand, but I'm guessing it's a juniors brand.)

  54. Ha ha! All fashion items should have alternate uses from here on.

  55. I ended up getting the medium size - i thought the bigger one looked much better on you than me - the medium is still pretty big! Thanks again!!
