Today's Everyday Fashion: Crazy Stripes
I wanted the look of a striped dress without actually owning a striped dress, so I got creative in my closet and put together this top and skirt. They don't exactly match - the skirt is navy and ivory and the shirt is black and ivory - so those are some crazy stripes! This outfit is a little more rock-n-roll than my usual style but I have to say I dig it for a concert or a night out. Would you wear mixed stripes?
A note on the jacket: it has unfinished hems, which I love the look of, but yesterday I noticed it's unraveling in one place (some sequins are coming off). I never want to mislead anyone in their purchase so please beware of this little factoid if you are considering buying it! :-) I still recommend it ($15 is a steal), and I plan to keep wearing it after trimming off the loose sequins.

I'm not a huge fan of the mixed stripes, but I do think your outfit is really cute, especially for a night out like you said. Love those shoes!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that skirt. Is it currently in stores?

Jeanette, what is your strategy for MJR sales? I've been there several times since reading about it here, but there is nothing cool in my size (8 or 10 or Med). How often do you check it? Do they add new things every day? I love the things you show that your bought there, but it's always a big nothing when I look. Thanks for a tip!
ReplyDeleteThis is one stylish ensemble..I like!

i LOVE it! Ahhhh so fun! and i feel like you could also switch the jacket out with a jean jacket and make it a little more casual for day and then go back to the sequins for night.
ReplyDeleteSo cute and so edgy! I LOVE this look and oh my goodness, I love these shoes so much! I can't believe how much you got them for! Wish I had them in my closet! Looking amazing as always!
ReplyDeleteI never would of thought of doing that! This is Brilliant!! I love the mix of both:) You look ready for a classy yet rocky concert:P haha:)
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I'm doing a similar look on Friday with a dress I just got at Old Navy. I have blue shoes like in your inspiration photo that I didn't even think of using for that dress. So thank you!

If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have never noticed your "dress" wasn't actually a dress! Cute outfit!
ReplyDeleteI would have never known this was two separate pieces - bravo!! Love this look!

I can't believe you're not wearing a dress! The color difference it the top and skirt is so minimal. What an amazing re-creation of that look!
ReplyDeleteLove it! so fun for a night out
ReplyDeleteThanks Aubrey! Here is a link to a tour of my old closet. Hoping to get around to showing you my new closet soon - it's much bigger but half empty. ;-) http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/06/peek-inside-my-closet.html
ReplyDeleteI love this idea and totally agree! A jean jacket and flat sandals would be great for a daytime event - switch to sequins and heels and you are ready to go for night!
ReplyDeleteJane, here is my post about MJR Sales. I stick to the "New Arrivals" section, since the best stuff sells out right away. I generally check the website 2-3 times over the course of several weeks before placing an order. I believe they get new stuff 2-3 times a week (thousands of items usually). It's definitely a treasure hunt! I prefer doing it online rather than in a store though. ;-) http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/03/todays-everyday-fashion-my-new.html
ReplyDeleteLOVE the way you styled this look!! Do you know of any shoes similar to the blue ones in the Intermix photo??
ReplyDeleteHey J, what size is your jacket? Im thinking of ordering one, but the S is sold out. I don't know if I should go for the XS or the M. I am a size 4 Im thinking M.
ReplyDeleteI got an XS! I'm usually a 0 or 2 in blazers.
ReplyDeleteThe shoes she is wearing are Jimmy Choo - here's a link! I looked and didn't find any affordable options. My Chinese Laundry Luck Strike shoes are really similar but they don't come in blue. http://www.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=310187558&pid=uid2641-1460879-79
ReplyDeleteSuper cute for a fun night out! Just looked on MJR Sales, nothing, I guess it's hit or miss!

ReplyDeleteyou can't even tell that's not a dress! love it!!

Thanks, Im worried the M may be too big. Don't know how cute it will be if its not fitted....grr.
ReplyDeleteThanks!! So out of my price range, but definitely going to look for something similar.
ReplyDeleteI was actually in Marshall's yesterday and was so excited to stumble upon a striped dress, but I didn't get it because I thought it was too much on me. Kind of dizzying to look at since they were vertical stripes on top and horizontal on the bottom. Any suggestions on how to make it work?
I seriously keep looking at this I can't believe how much I love this! And yes the shoes are pretty amazing too. "They're kind of a big deal" :)
ReplyDeletelove the shoes!
ReplyDelete10 points for the Anchorman reference! Haha, love it! :-)
ReplyDeleteLori, definitely hit or miss! I often look and don't find anything, and then a week later I'm overwhelmed b/c there are so many amazing things I want to buy!
ReplyDeleteI think with a dress like that fit is going to be hugely important so if that was off it may just not work altogether. To minimize stripes like that though, I recommend putting a dark (navy or black) cardigan or blazer over it. If you button one button on your cardigan, it can even create a point on your waist and pulls in the eyes, making you appear thinner. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteCrazy stripes...I always can not resist stripe dress.
ReplyDeleteAm I crazy? haaa

Love the mixed stripes! My instinct would have been to put it with a colored blazer or shoes!
