Today's Everyday Fashion: Comfort Wins

Sometimes, what looks best in an outfit is not always the most practical. This week I needed an outfit for my consulting gig. I'll be on my feet for hours doing employee trainings, creating lookbooks, and taking photographs so comfy shoes were of the utmost importance. Sky-high shoes may look pretty but they don't always cut it in the real world. Both of these shoes are fairly comfy, but the wedges will probably win this round, based on comfort alone! Do you usually choose comfort over style or vice versa?

  1. Thankfully, both these shoes look great with the outfit - and you've given me another idea for how to wear my polka dot pencil skirt...thanks! :)

  3. Love the skirt. Nice to know the younger gals find the higher heels a bit of a challenge!! Sometimes practical, but stylish, has to win out.

  4. Love this outfit!  I think both shoes look great, so the comfiest is the best choice.  I always choose comfort for work...I figure if I'm teeter-tottering around the office that kind of negates the sexier heel, haha

  5. I LOVE the polka dot skirt! Thanks for the links.

  6. How do you belt your skirts without them bunching up? I'm not sure if I made my belt too tight and that's why it bunched. If I made it looser then it doesn't stay in place.

  7. Love how you styled the polka dot skirt today! I wish I could pull off yellow as well as you, it's the one color that looks absolutely dreadful on me

  8. I like to choose comfort over style.  But my comfort look is usually  very stylish!

  9. I think that shoes must always be comfortable. Jack Rogers are very comfortable!

  11. Lol Elizabeth, I agree! Not being able to walk in your sky-high heels unfortunately kind of defeats the purpose! :-)

  12. I try to find fashion that is comfortable! Depending on the event and outfit, sometimes comfort slides down the importance scale. But for day-to-day work/out&about outfits, definitely comfort!

  13. The comfort factor depends on the plan for the day. If I'll be largely sitting at my desk, I worry less about comfort. But if I'll be running around it is comfort all the way!

FYI I like your version better!

  14. Love the wedges. If I knew I'd be on my feet all day, I'd go for comfy too.

  15. I have a heel height threshold. No more than 3.25". It's just not worth the pain. I'm most comfortable in 3" or lower heels.

  16.  J--I must ask: why are you such a heels fan? You are already very tall!! hahaha

  17. I am dying for a polka dot pencil skirt!  All your outfits with it look adorable no matter what shoes you wear :-)

I have to walk from my house to a train and then from a train to my office so I usually keep all my heels under my desk and wear flats on the commute.

  18. Just about every time I've chosen style over comfort, I've paid for it dearly!  I'm on my feet and am constantly running around campus, so at least for work comfort always wins.  For a night out, my priorities change, however. ;)  You look great, and best of luck with the consulting this week!

  19. I love this look with the slightly untucked sweater!! Super cute! And I choose my shoes on looks alone-- I can always be seen trekking around SF in 5 inch heels!

  20. LOVE the outfit.  The belt over the skirt is super cute.  I usually opt for comfort unless I know I won't be doing a lot of walking or standing around!  Uncomfortable shoes are just the worst!!

  22. J, glad you are bringing up this issue. I feel like it's my biggest style challenge right now. I wish there were some better-looking comfortable shoes out there. Maybe a follow-up post could give us some options :)

  24. I've decided that shoes that hurt just aren't worth it, so I'm on a mission to find shoes that are cute and comfortable.  I don't want to give up style, but I don't want my feet to hurt.  I like both of your outfits, but I'd go with the wedges as well.

  25. Love this outfit! I may need to go get a polka dot pencil skirt now.

Comfort usually wins for me (unless I'm going out). I'm totally that girl that always has a pair of back-up flats in my purse or in my car.

  28. Love the combo of brights with polka dots...one of my faves! As much as I love heels, I usually choose comfort or at least take an emergency flat just in case.

  29. Jc, well... on the blog I'm a fan of heels because they generally photograph better. (I think this is why most websites/magazines show heels, to be honest.) It just so happens that I am also a heels fan in my daily life, though. I love being almost 6 foot - no idea why, I just do. :-) I do wear flat sandals quite often though, and I try to post with them from time to time. (see Saturday's post!) :-)

  30. Becky, the wedges in today's post are awesome!! I wore them for 8 hours straight today. Zero foot pain. Wedges are amazing like that!

  32. Although your *gorgeous* polka dot skirt has a dark NAVY background, I remember in the olden days when Fashion Advisors used to say, "Never wear bright yellow, (or neon yellow), with BLACK because it'll make you look too much like a bumblebee," (haha)!!    In the many years since I first heard that funny admonition, I've come to really love bumblebees because they're simply............ soooo *cute*............ very compact, (i.e., they look like little yellow-and-black striped fireplugs!!)............ just INCREDIBLY industrious, flying from flower-to-flower, gathering pollen............ and they DON'T sting ya............ i.e., like yellow jackets & black hornets can sure sting you, (haha)!!

What I meant to say is that NOWADAYS............ even *if* I had a white-polka-dotted skirt which had a BLACK background............ (i.e., instead of with a dark NAVY background like yours, Above, does, J.!!)............ I'd just go-right-ahead and wear something *yellow* with my skirt anyway............ just to  *h.o..n.o.r.*  the brief lives of Hardworking Little Bumblebees Everywhere, (haha)!!

  33. I'm a day late replying, but I think this is a great topic!  A lot of time I'm getting dressed just to go run errands.  I love heels, for the office or out at night especially.  But somehow heels don't seem quite right if I'm just going to drop the baby off at daycare or go to the grocery store.  What do you wear when you're going to run errands? Both regarding comfort, and errand-appropriate style?

    ReplyDelete
  34. What types of shoes do you wear to run errands?  That's always the tough one for me!  I love wearing heels to work and out at night, but I never know what to wear when I'm going to the grocery store!  :)

  35. Rose, I usually wear flat, leather gladiator type sandals to the grocery store. You won't ever see me in flip flops unless I'm walking the dog or on the beach. And if I'm running errands at the mall, then I usually wear wedges!

  37. Just curious...are you still anti-sweaters in most of your wardrobe?

    ReplyDelete
  38.   I agree heels just look better than flats and even at 5'7" I  feel better in heels, although in my old age, I cannot wear sky high ones.  It is a dilemma what to wear on errands, in the winter low heeled boots or low heeled shooties.  Summer, low heeled sandels or Ked oxfords.  As usual, your outfit outdoes the inspiration photo.  Going to vote...

  39. Not sure what you mean (did I say this another post?). I have tons of sweaters (such as this one) - I wear them all the time.

  41. heyyyy, that's a super cute outfit! I have a polka dot skirt and yellow cardi... you just gave me a great way to style them together!  (yes, I'd wear it to work!)

  42.  I LOVE this outfit! Love the polka dots, love the neon mustardness (not sure what to call that color- but its great lol) If I had a job where I didn't have to wear boring frumpy scrubs, this skirt would be on my "to purchase" list! I have too many pieces in my closest with the price tag still attached :( I seriously want a career change just so I can wear all this cute stuff! maybe someday!
