Today's Everyday Fashion: Quotes

Tonight I'm speaking at UCF and this is what I'm planning to wear! The meeting is for UCF's PR club, Quotes, and I'll be covering a number of topics including how to effectively pitch a blogger and an overview of social media tactics. (See flyer below for details/if you want to come!) I recently put together this look with my new bright blue pencil skirt and it was love at first sight. I love a good green/blue/yellow combo, and the mix of tighter skirt with a much looser top, and overall I think it's professional but still fun enough for a college crowd. Would you wear this look?

Sweater: c/o LOFT, $20
Skirt: H&M, $18
Necklace: JcPenney, $9
Clutch: c/o LOFT, $28 (recent)
Shoes: Bandolino from TJ Maxx, $22 (similar)
Rings: LOFT pink ring $11, My Stella & Dot website $49
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift
Bracelets: Banana Republic $10, My Stella & Dot website $49

1. Piperlime blue pencil skirt, $59
2. Nordstrom blue pencil skirt, $68

  3. Super cute!  I'd wear it if it looked like that on me!  I really struggle with skirts on my middle heavy frame and always feel a little dumpy in them.  Good luck tonight!

  4. I love the color combo! I would totally wear it!

  5. Yes, I'd definitely wear that, you look great! One question- any tips for the "half-tucked in top" look? I tried to do that recently, but I feel like it sloppy/silly on me. It probably only works with a top that's not too long or too poofy. You're definitely pulling it off in this look and I've seen you do it before!

  9. I love bright colors, but I have pale skin so they don't always look good. I tend to go with more of the pale or pastel version of a bright color.

  10. So pretty! You always have the best color combinations!

  11. Flirty and fun with just the right amount of class!

  14. I am definitely a fan of the sloppy tuck - a lot of times shirts/sweaters are too thick to tuck in the full way around, and if you are wearing a belt, the sloppy tuck will show off your belt buckle. That said, it definitely won't work for every single shirt. This sweater is borderline too thick for it, and I just played with it until it looked "right." Not necessarily any formula to follow, just try it, see if it works, and play with it until you are satisfied! I hope that incredibly un-scientific answer helps. :-)

  20. Jess, you totally made my day because I have been completely slacking on working out for about 6 months now and I feel really gross! :-( Have you seen this past post though where I talk about my fitness story? Some good tips to follow, and I'm hoping to get back on the fitness train soon! :-) http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2010/09/my-fitness-story.html

  26. I love the color blocking!

  27. I love that the blue and yellow complement the flyer, hooray for subtle branding!

  28. Love the whole outfit and color combo.  Gorgeous.  I don't care for the way the skirt is pulling and bunching on the hips/upper leg area, but it is still a beautiful look.

  29. Yay I love - good luck at college.x

  30. If I were anywhere near UCF I'd be there in a second!  Hope it goes great! Do you get nervous in front of crowds at all?  I've been terrified of public speaking my entire life, although now that I teach at a university it's getting a little better. Love the outfit and would definitely wear it. :)

  31. What a great colour combination on you. Bet you keep your audience interested and energized. Wish we got speakers who made as much visual impact as you. Looking interesting is equally as important as have interesting things to say.

  32. This may be my favorite outfit I've seen on your blog!  Looks great :)

  33. Love the outfit!!!

  34. Love green, blue and mustard together!! That is a great opportunity, hope you enjoyed!

  35. Thank you! :-) I love public speaking! I used to hate it in high school, but fell in love with it in college. The only thing that made me slightly nervous were all the tweets people were sending in anticipation (I was worried I would be a let-down, compared to their level of excitement), but it went great! :-)

  36. Too funny, I didn't notice that! The colors in the flyer are a total coincidence. I came up with my outfit and they created the flyer separately. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks Andi! I thought someone might mention that, but it's actually just the way I'm standing/the fact that I have 10 seconds to run across the room and get into position for the picture. When I'm standing straight, it doesn't bunch at all! :-)

  38. I love this color combo. One of my favorite outfits is bright blue skinny jeans with a green sweater. I get a lot of compliments. Compliments to you for your outfit.

  39. I love this color combo! As a redhead I could pull this off. Always bummed that yellow doesn't look good on me but
I could do the accessories in that color. Sounds like the event went well! So wish I could just hop on over to
    Florida!!

  40. Congratulations!!!  If any of your talks are ever available via video, please let us know. :)

  41. Lol yeah that was totally an accident! I picked my outfit/they created that flyer totally separate from each other.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought someone might mention that. :-) if I am standing straight it doesn't bunch at all. But I have 10 seconds to run across the room and I'm "posing" so my skirt is all wrinkly. Promise it doesn't really look like that!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Completely understandable. It was pretty common for me to have to do a “spirited walk” (i.e., run like hell) downtown to make it to a court hearing on time and my skirt ended up hiked, bunched, and pulled way worse than this. I used to try and walk fast in front of the dressing room mirror to see how bad a skirt would bunch before I bought it! I was so self conscious of this occupational hazard and that’s the ONLY reason I noticed.  The whole outfit looked so great that no one else would.  You look gorgeous and classy I’m so happy your talk went well.

  44. This is such a bright, cheery, optimistic, and *Spring*-like outfit, J. ............ i.e., SUNSHINE (mustard shoes and clutch)............ BLUE SKIES (bright blue pencil skirt)............ and GREEN GRASS (lush green sweater)!!

For Public Speaking to a college crowd, a "sloppy tuck"~(as you referred to it, in your reply to "guest," within this post's Comments)~would honestly seem to............ make a Speaker more *approachable* TO a college crowd............ i.e., as opposed to, say, having a (Perfectly-Starched-Ironed-And-Tucked!!) Job Interview Look.

With your wearing a Bright and Colorful Outfit............ with your having wonderful Posture and Confidence............ and ALSO with your being  *v.e.r.y.*  Smart, J., and Approachable, too............ well, 'bet you "nailed it" yesterday (March 27) at 5:30 p.m. ............ at UCF's PR club, Quotes!!

  46. N-I-C-E!  I would definitely wear this look/colours.  Got some shopping to do.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That outfit got me thinking. I love the shoes + skirt + purse and feel like so many shirts could go with it.  I don't have yellow things but now I want some. Man do I ever.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Beautiful outfit! I love the pops of yellow!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love these shades of blue and green!  I love wearing green and usually don't see blue shades I like too much but this shade of it is just gorgeous.  Putting on my "things to look out for when shopping" list
