Today's Everyday Fashion: Goldilocks

I love everything about this inspiration photo, so I decided to give it a try with my own clothes! If I worked in retail or a creative office, I would wear this to work. But since what I really needed was an outfit for the mall yesterday, like Goldilocks, I tried a bunch of combos before I found one that worked. I substituted the white sweater for white jeans, tried cognac boots, and eventually settling on the loafers I bought for Europe. I never wear flats, but my muscles were killing me from the Insanity video I did a couple days ago, so comfort was key. How would you make this outfit work for your life?

  2. How do you keep your old sweater from the Gap so beautiful and white?! All my white clothes look disgusting within  a month of buying them... and of coarse I was white separately.. help us! What are your tricks?! I would love to know!

  3. Do you have any tips for how to survive a full day in heels? I can rarely stand them for more than two or three hours, and I'm always so jealous of girls who run around in them all day like it's nothing!

  5. I think everyone else looks cute in flats but I can rarely get out the door in them. I hate the way they look on me. I'll have to keep this one for inspiration.
I wanted to check out that target blazer but the link goes to a pair of boots.

  6. I love that inspiration photo! For my casual office I would wear skinny white jeans and pair my gold sparkly tee with it! Maybe light blue flats for the pop of blue!

  7. Elena, I fixed the link! Here it is if you want to check it out: http://www.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=293741377&pid=uid2641-1460879-79

And yes, I feel the same about flats. I have huge feet for how tall I am (I wear a 10) so I feel like I look like a capital L in them. ;-)

  8. Nikki, check out my guide to selecting comfy heels. I think that's the first step - finding good shoes. Other than that, it's definitely something that takes some time getting used to. You could bring a pair of flats + heels to work and try the heels and switch to flats if things get uncomfortable! (I think a lot of women keep extra shoes at their desk!) http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/05/todays-everyday-fashion-how-to-select.html

  9. Katie, a few things: 1. the sweater is ever so slightly off white, which helps (true white is definitely harder to keep) 2. I have a lot of clothes, so the sweater hasn't been worn too much (although I've definitely worn it) 3. If you can wear it away from the body so it's not touching you/your body "oils" (aka over a collared shirt) then it will last longer 4. I'm gentle with my clothes - I hand wash a lot of things, hang dry almost everything and use Dryel for anything dry clean only which is gentler than traditional dry cleaning!

  10. Both of your outfits are really fun!  I would probably like the second look best for myself - mostly because I'm a "flats all the time" girl - I don't have good enough balance to walk in heels!

  20. I am a serious athlete and there are many days where I am just too worn out for heels.   I also never wear heels to run errands.  I like to move fast, and heels slow me down.  They are fine for a party, the office, or a special event.  But the rest of the time, flats are it for me.  I have an assortment of great flat boots, sandals, and ballerina-type shoes.

Your second outfit would be something I'd wear to run errands.  I love those loafers!

  21. I love, love, LOVE those loafers!!!

  23. I absolutely love the outfit you wore. It's so practical and still so fashionable (IMO). I have two fashion questions for you, if you don't mind :-)

    1) Would you wear the same colored (statement) necklace and skirt? (Ex: aqua necklace, aqua skirt)
    2) Can you wear a navy top and black tights in the same outfit? (The skirt is one that would match the navy and match the black. It's just the question of whether you can get away with navy and black in the same outfit.)
Thanks!! I really appreciate your feedback!!

  24. This is definitely my kind of outfit. I must admit, I am very fond of white pants. I'm always confused about the "Labor Day Rule" though. I know some people wear all white in winter?

  25. Hi,

  27. I lovveee this look, I have that same skirt and somebody blasted me for wearing it to work!  "I worn it to work and made it work' and so did you.  I like your take on this as well!  So cool!

  28. No matter what you wear, someone will have something to say about it so I say wear what you want! Glad you made it work! :-)

  29. So sweet, thank you Anna!

  30. Sarah, I'm not a fan of the Labor Day rule! I think you should dress for the weather + it's all in how you style it. I wore white jeans in the winter in Boston with knee-high cognac boots and a navy wool coat.

  31. Kate, yes and yes! I love navy and black together. And you can definitely match your skirt to your necklace, but you also don't need to (if that makes sense). :-)

  32. This is one of my favorite outfits I ever seen you in! I love the neutral colors- and love the flats (since I wear flats daily!).

  33. Love both of these looks (and your blog) - I love the spiced up neutrals and the combination of textures!
