Today's Everyday Fashion: The Wookie
I ordered this faux fur vest more than a month ago, but haven't had the guts to wear it yet. On the one hand, I think it's adorable, I love the faux fur trend, and I like that it makes my new darker hair look even darker. On the other hand, I kind of feel like a wookie. (insert wookie noise here) That's why I'm taking it to the streets to see what you guys think - do you think faux fur vests are a yay or a nay?

I haven't picked up a fur vest yet since I'm not sure how much longer this trend will last...but they do look like they'd be SO warm and cozy on a cold winter day.

You usually pull off the more unusual trends very well so I think you can make it work. I don't love the vest though. Seems a bit shaggy and shapeless. A more shaped version would look great (like the first 2 examples at the bottom of your post.)
ReplyDeleteI like it on you but I couldn't pull it off!
ReplyDeleteDefinite yay! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI kind of have the same feeling about the faux fur vest. I love it and how it looks, but haven't taken the plunge. You pulled it off though!
ReplyDeleteI am on team nay.. but I love those pants and am on the lookout for some that color. I hate how whenever there is something really cute on someone's blog, it's from TJs or Marshall's or something. Sigh.. let the hunt continue! Happy new year, J!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE my fur vest. I'm from a small town and sometimes get stares when I wear it though haha! Way to work it J!
ReplyDeleteI like the vest but I think I would like it better with a darker, knit top under it, maybe something with more bulk. In that case you might go with lighter pants, don't recall if you have mustard pants...
ReplyDeleteHmmm, there's something just a bit "off" about the one you have on. The color is okay and it looks okay from the front but the back is just bulky and too square. Maybe because it's cropped? Maybe you need one that has fur on the front but is just plain knit on the back?
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit J. I also was wondering if you could do some interview outfits in the future. The plain black suit is so boring and I know you could spark it up a bit.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeanette! At Charyli, we think faux vests are a definite "yay!" We've been carrying a similar vest for the past few weeks and they've been selling really well. Looks like some Central Floridians agree the trend is hot, too. We hope you'll come visit us on Park Avenue in the future!
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Charyli
You never know until you try! Having confidence is more than half the battle. :)
ReplyDeleteI like the trend, but I am to nervous to buy one! I don't think I could pull it off!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on this. I don't dislike it, but it's not my favorite trend right now. I like to know trends are going to last a bit, before I start shelling out money.
ReplyDeleteI love it! And if anyone can rock it, it's you! If it were some super big vest, that would be different, but because it is cropped shorter, it isn't too overpowering.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, J. Wookie. Plus, I don't like the way it fits you from the back. I think the outfit under the vest rocks. I want those jeans! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you can admit when something intimidates you! I'm pretty sure this is my first time commenting on your fabulous blog, but I'm completely taken in by your great fashion...this is definitely a trend that I haven't jumped on the bandwagon (yet) and I can't lie, it scares the bejeebers outta me! (c: You pulled it off perfect, my dear! I think if I was to do it, I lean a little more towards the shorter furs (maybe because they're less scary to me???)...and those booties rock my world...
ReplyDeleteI love love love them, but am super scared to wear one! I guess I should bite the dust. That, and the price for the vest you have? It's perfect!
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time with faux fur vests if the "pelt" has longer hair I need a longer vest otherwise it gets bulky. I think this vest is cute on you, and it looks great with your hair colour!
ReplyDeleteWell I'm very happy I got you out of non-commenting status today! :-) Thank you for the kind words, and yes, I agree faux fur vests are tough. Curious to see if this trend stays around for a long time or not!
ReplyDeleteThanks Erin! I agree - I look like a hunchback from the back - not sure if that's the angle I was standing? Might have to play with that again. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope to make it in to check out the new store soon.
ReplyDeleteAlexa, thank you! I have had interview outfits on my list for a lonnggg time, will plan to finally do a post on that soon. I have to warn you though - interviews are the one time I suggest dressing very "boring" so the emphasis is on you and your skills, not your outfit. I always say you should save your cute outfit for the first day of work! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Erin! I agree - I look like a hunchback from the back - not sure if that's the angle I was standing in the photo? Might have to play with that and my camera again. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love that you rock the vest!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI totally know what you mean! It's either from TJs or thrifted, which is even worse. I had some readers find these jeans recently at their TJ Maxx, so you might get lucky if you look soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of the faux fur sweater. But I also have an undying love for Rachel Zoe - queen of the faux fur! I do think it's a bit man-repelling though. My husband always makes the Chewbacca sound when I pull out the faux fur, ha!
ReplyDeleteI also just got a faux fur vest & havent worn it yet...still on the fence but I dont want to return it! Haha! I guess since it's cool now I can bust it out ;)

Love the vest so much!!! Been looking for a faux fur vest that is affordable this whole winter...and I love MJR! Can you comment back the link of this vest that you got on mjr? Would love to buy it also... Thanks!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Brittany! They didn't have any when I looked online last night, but I would keep checking. The brand is REZREKSHN (just added this info to the caption) and the product ID is 388634.
ReplyDeleteErin, you said everything I was going to say! I think it looks good from the front, but the back is a tad too short, square and it does indeed look hunchbackish!
ReplyDeletelove the vest! i too love the fur trend but find it a bit intimidating... your look here is accessible enough to replicate! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely a yay from Scotland! I love them although I don't have one yet...
ReplyDeleteTry it with slim cords in the same color. Love this look but I think a pant with texture pulls it together. Velvet would be good too. Love the boots!
ReplyDeleteNew to your site, found it on LOFT's facebook wall. Love your belt tip! I've always wanted to wear belts over sweaters but never felt like I could pull it off. I love your belt trick, makes the look feel more comfortable on me! Keep up the great ideas please!!!
I think a fur vest is a difficult trend to make your own. However, I think you pulled it off well. You picked a great color that flatters you!
ReplyDeleteI'm rocking a fur vest today too! Love it with that Stella & Dot necklace!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a nay!
ReplyDeleteHaha I love how you call this The Wookie. I love it! :)

I agree with Erin ("eri-thon" blog) that a faux fur vest............ (which has this much *overall bulk*, whether it's a short-hair faux fur or a long-hair faux fur)............ might possibly be more "wearable" if it only had fur on the FRONT; and just a plain knit on the BACK.
ReplyDeleteThis is probably a *silly* little idea, but after you've worn your faux fur vest, (i.e., for as LONG as you want), to then "extend the life of the vest," you could take your vest to a fabric store; and choose a substantial-weight, (95% cotton/5% Spandex), *jacquard*-knit fabric in, say, a rich espresso brown or black. Take the knit fabric and your vest to a tailor, (whom you've already consulted)............ who would replace the faux fur back of your vest with the less-bulky knit fabric. Then, with the "removed" faux fur back from your vest, the tailor could make you a pretty, *luxurious* PILLOW for your bed or couch, using the same jacquard-knit fabric for the back of your pillow!! I wish I knew how to sew well----(i.e., so I could at least offer to someday do this for you myself, J)----but I don't!! ('Told ya this idea was *silly*, haha!!)
The title of this post is great! I love the concept of this outfit, I really want to rock a fur vest, I just havent found one that is flattering... I actually have some faux fur and wanted to attempt making a vest, but life sort of got in the way of that :)
ReplyDeleteLove the pants a lot, that color is wonderful!

I bought one in September- returned it in October. felt like I was wearing a costume and just couldn't pull it off.
ReplyDeleteI COMPLETELY agree with the "wookie" feeling. That being said, I didn't think twice when I saw you wearing the vest. Because you are so stylish, it seemed to simply pull your outfit together rather than making you look ridiculous (as I usually feel when wearing faux fur). I think the vest is a definite yay! (and also don't think it looks bulky on you in the least!)
ReplyDeleteI just got a steal on a vest at Macy's right before Christmas for $17.00 w/coupons. Mine has side sweater material in black and helps cut down on the bulk. I also just got the shoes like yours and now I have to dig in my closet for the pants. Still haven't worn mine yet either.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Will look out for it...Your blog is amazing and has inspired me in so many ways to dress differently and to find great deals!! Love that you always look cute but it's affordable.. Style on :)
ReplyDeleteYay, thank you Brittany! So glad you like the blog, thanks for reading!
ReplyDeleteI think the vest would totally work if it were a bit longer. At the length that it is, it just becomes a little too boxy looking (which that look isn't really flattering on ANYONE). The one I have (which my mother made for me and I should probably post a picture of it because it's amazing) goes down to about where my hips are (maybe a little longer) and it works perfectly. That really doesn't probably help you much with your vest, but I felt like sharing anyway. :)
