Today's Everyday Fashion: Cropped Trousers

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I really don't like dress pants. Last year I discovered one kind that I dig though - the cropped trouser - and they have (somewhat) changed my mind on the topic. I think they are a chic update to the usual wide leg or bootcut dress pant, they remind me of all the pants I saw women wearing in London this fall, and I especially love that they show off your shoes. What do I look for in a cropped trouser?

- Something that hits mid-calf to right above the ankle.
- Something that tapers and gets slightly tighter at the bottom of the pant. (Wide leg crops remind me a bit of coolots!)
- Something in an interesting fabric like these thick gray wool pants, or the green ones from ASOS below.

Do you wear cropped pants? What qualities do you look for in dress pants?

  1. I love cropped pants! I started wearing them because my legs are a weird length. Short is too short but regular is too long. But crops are perfect!

  2. I love cropped pants!  They give off an Audrey Hepburn or Jackie Kennedy feel.  I also like that they can be worn with heels or flats.  I like mine just above the ankle.

  4. Hi, I love your outfit today! i would like to know what do you think about wearing cropped trouser with boots. Here in Israel you can find thousands of cropped trousers at summer, but i never wear them at winter cause i never found the right boots for that... do you think it can work together?  i don't think i ever saw this combinations between your outfits here...

  5. I'm afraid to try cropped trousers. I have to wear flats to work, so I'm unsure as to how they would look with a shorter hem. But the Anne Klein pairs looks gret paired with flats- but the model is also way taller than me! Guess I'm still a little skeptical lol.

  6. love cropped pants if they are the "right" length.  for full lenght trousers/pants, try Anne Taylor FACTORY, Signature style.  you and I seem to have a similar build and they fit me perfectly!  i wear size 4(you're probably a 2), but the thing i love about them is that the length of the 4 is just right. most pants that fit me in the waist are too short in length, but the Signatures are just right.

  7. Great post!  And great timing!!!  I'm in search of cropped or ankle pants... and I'm having a hard time finding just what I want.  Most everything that I'm finding right now, I consider to be more of a summer length (mid calf) and I'm looking for more of an ankle pant.  Last year LOFT had a great slim fit riding pant and I bought a pair in black... now I wish I had bought the green as well.  Anyway, for fall and winter I'd really like to make the ankle pant my go to pant... because I'm not really a trouser kind of girl either (I'd live in jeans if I could).  If I could find a pair in a funky glenn plaid, that would be cool too... I seem to recall that years (YEARS) ago J.Crew had something like that.  What are good search terms when it comes to looking on the internet for cropped trousers?

  8. Those cropped trousers look so good on you!!! I'm a little worried because I'm short, but maybe I should give them a shot?

  9. you look nice in cropped trousers! I dont like pants either, but I have no choice. I live in a very cold country we have to wear pants sometimes.

The inspiration photo is from Marie a la mode: she is a local blogger from the city I am, I am just thinking what a small world it is, that you took inspiration from her, her dressing sense is so awesome!

the only kind of "trouser" i wear are the cropped kind! i have some on right now - my favs from J. Crew. And they are just long enough that you can wear them with boots when it's colder too!

  11. I love these cropped trousers on you!! I'm getting really tired of my dress pants and feel frumpy in them so I'm definitely going to invest in some cropped dress pants...and I had some wide leg ones and now I really don't like the look anymore...especially now I'll think of coolots! ;)

  12. Shayla, thank you! And sorry to put that mental image of coolots in your head lol! :-)

  14. Nav, thanks so much for the heads up, I added a link to her blog in the caption! :-)

  15. Liz, I would at least try them on (maybe in a couple different lengths) and see how you feel. If you aren't sure, try snapping a dressing room pic to see if they look flattering! :-)

  16. Betty, definitely check out ASOS and Urban Outfitters for cropped pants. ASOS had some rad houndstooth ones, but there were only a couple sizes left so I didn't want to post them. I use ShopStyle to search for things and "cropped trousers" brought up hundreds of options.

  17. You are correct - I have not tried that combination yet, but I think it can be done! Planning on giving it a try this winter so stay tuned!

  18. I avoid cropped pants because far too many women my age wear them inappropriately.  They choose pants that are too casual and too frumpy and think they are great for the office.  I stick with trousers or skirts.  But I would consider breaking "no cropped pants" rule for any of the three you linked - they are all slim cuts that are appropriate in an office setting.

  19. What's your sense on the level of "professionalism" of cropped pants? I often feel under dressed even in a great pair of slim-cut, perfectly fitting ones that I have ... while they're easily the best-looking trousers I own, I hesitate to wear them sometimes because of the professionalism issue?

  21. I used to wear boot cut dress pants and then this year decided I wasn't going to do it anymore! Now my favorite pair is the really skinny black pant from Gap- so comfortable and cute! I am slightly obsessing over those green ones above! I think I need them!

  23. What is the brand of that purse? Love it.

  24. Jes, that is a great question! When it comes to questions like these, it's really going to depend on your specific work place and what you feel would be appropriate there. It also very much depends on what you wear with the cropped pants. I do think they can be very professional though. One of my all-time favorite outfits is with these cropped pants (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.163483153677429.45093.120030604689351&type=1#!/photo.php?fbid=188542964504781&set=a.163483153677429.45093.120030604689351&type=3&theater), and I think it is very professional - I would wear it in a dressy work setting for sure. I think your shoes also matter a lot here since they are on display! Keep it close-toe or a small peep toe in a nice pump and you should be good to go.

  25. Sarah, I know, I want one myself! :-( I don't know the brand but she got it a Macy's super on sale about a year ago I believe.

  26. I really like this look! I'm very short I look for unpleated and straight leg trousers. I really like the idea of cropped trousers! How would you wear them into the winter?

  27. Thanks Amanda! I think I'm going to try to wear these (or another cropped pair) with boots this winter. Not sure if it will work but I'm going to try it!

  28. I love cropped trousers too, but am not the biggest fan of the Gap ones tbh. I think they bag and bunch too much at the juncture of the thighs and around the knees.

  29. J, thank you for your post, I've been thinking the same thing, but haven't been able to articulate it!! I feel the same way, I can't seem to bring myseld to purchase regular pants, I only seem to gravitate to cropped pants or skinnies!! Thanks for posting the links- it helps to see where to go to fulfil the trend,  XXOO

  30. what do you think is the suitable length for cropped pants? i recently bought my first pair and they fall just above the ankles. i think they look very cute but i have received comments saying it looks like the pants are too short for me, or they shrunk or something..

  31. I am wearing this look today for work.  My gray pants are long not cropped.
