Today's Everyday Fashion: Fire and Ice

Last night I pulled my sorry self out of the house to attend Yelp's big event of the year. The dress code was red and white (fire and ice), so I thought it was the perfect time to pull out my new orangish red Varga dress. I switched out the elastic belt for a brown leather one, added some colorful earrings, and put on some sandals. I never wear flat shoes to events (and felt extremely short!) but I didn't feel comfy wearing heels with the stitches in my knee. Yelp always puts on good events, and I was in good company with my friend Ashley, so it's no surprise that it was a great night!

About the dress: I'm wearing a size S. The fit is insane on this dress (as in, really good!) The color is more vibrant as shown in my photo. The fabric is a tad thin, but with some nude undergarments you are good to go! Overall, I'm a huge fan.

(ps. I know someone is going to comment on how tan I look - but this was a high flash + low lighting situation so it's just the lighting of the photo. *promise*)

Occasion: Yelp event
Dress: c/o Varga, $44
Belt: Gap, $12
Earrings: Forever 21, $6
Shoes: Diba via Nordstrom Rack, $30
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8

  2. If people comment on your tan it's only because you look awesome!  As a fellow olive/always tan person (1/8 Cherokee baby!), I say rock the tan girl!!!

  4. You do look tan, but it looks great!  I only wish I had your skin color!  Wow, the dress is so vibrant!  I love it!  It looks totally different in color than the pic.  The pic doesn't do it justice.

  9. Thanks Jan! It's definitely way more of a vibrant color in person, and in my opinion, much prettier in person!

  10. Sarah, me too!!! I'm also Cherokee. It's funny because it kind of randomly "came out" in me when I was born - I was a dark-skinned, black haired newborn. I have darker skin than most people in my family, and I love it - just some people give me crap for unsafe tanning practices, which is ridic because it's my natural skin color. :-)

  11. Thank you so much Brandi! Love that I inspired you to try colorful earrings. I have a slight addiction to turquoise jewelry, it's awesome and goes with everything.

  14. That dress is fantastic! And how tall are you? You don't look short. I'm not even five feet so I tend to wear heels more often than not, too.

I'm glad you had a good time!

  15. Thank you Melissa! I'm 5'7", but I'm used to being 5'11" because I'm always in heels. It was nice not wearing them for a change even if it did feel funny! :-)

  20. People probably just think that because you dye your hair blond so you don't look Cherokee. I'm happy you don't practice unsafe tanning!!!

I totally agree - i think the blond hair throws people off. Hair is fake, but skin is not people!! :-) I was a lifeguard and got way too much sun as a teenager -now I limit the amount of time I spend at the pool, and use SPF religiously. Gotta keep our skin safe!

  26. I'm going to be really bad now and say that I'm totally addicted to the sun, love being outside and tanning inside or out!  I think tan looks better than pale and I'm fully aware of my skin cancer risks! (insert evil laugh here) lol

  27. You look so pretty! This color is amazing against your skin tone. Wish I had your natural tan going on.  It looks so great against any color or shade of clothing.

  32. Do you have brunette pictures you can share?  I am trying to picture you as a brunette. I think it would be really pretty!

  33. Laura, there's a brunette picture in my fitness post: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2010/09/my-fitness-story.html. That was also during my chubby phase so I'm not loving it. Definitely planning to add some low lights for fall though! :-)

  34. This is an incredible look for 100$. I love that dress, very versatile. I think it would look best on you than me though, due to your amazing tan. Also your new strappy, gladiator nude sandals were a great purchase as I can see them being worn a toooon!!
