Today's Everyday Fashion: Bare Your Midriff

I love that tying your shirt in a knot is back in style. I have tons of too loose and too long collared shirts that this trick is perfect for. I have to admit that I'm hesitant to show my midriff though, even this high up and only a peek. The key to this outfit is having high-waisted shorts (which is why my shorts are white, that's the only color of high-wasited shorts I have) so that you are only showing a little bit of your skin. I really am curious to hear what you guys think though! Would you dare to show a peek of midriff like in these photos? Should I go for it?

  1. I love the knotted tie look on tops.  However, after having 2 children, baring my midriff is not for me.  I do think it's cute if it's styled right, like your look above. It just gives a little peek and a hint of skin without being over the top.

  2. I am having this same argument in my head this morning. I have a super long chambray top that I want to knot up, but of course my tummy peeks through some when I do this. I think it's super cute, but what will the public think? Decisions, decisions. BUT, You are rocking it!

  3. I think you look absolutely chic and polished.  The cut of everything you are wearing is sophisticated, not overly casual, and the amount of skin showing is tasteful, not tawdry.

  5. This looks great on you, but I'm not comfortable showing my midriff (even though it's 104 degress here in TX and I wish I could run around naked!) :) But I love the idea of knotting the shirt, maybe over a maxi dress?

  6. You look great in this. I'm not sure I could pull it off. Maybe a couple of years ago I wouldn't have been so scared, but approaching 30 and showing my midriff scares me now!

  7. Looks great on you, but I could never pull it off!

  8. I love the maxi dress idea Emily, I tried it out in this post: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/06/todays-everyday-fashion-new-trick.html

  9. This look is adorable! I think a pretty wide variety of women could pull this off too and still look great. The high waist shorts are key.

  10. Or with a tank underneath?

  11. You look great J, love the outfit! As for the peek of midriff - I am totally for it in the hot summer days, of course if occasion allows it (not for work, school, church etc.) and if it is not baring half of your tummy :) but first and foremost - if what you're baring looks good! So this is for toned tummy (not only 6-pack, simply flat one) I don't think it looks good if it sticks out... why show it then? Yours is for showing :)
(I have tons of photos with bare midriff from adventure parks like Disneyland, Six flags, Sea world... lot of weekend trips with friends... and it wasn't even on purpose, my shorts were low cut and my tops(tanks, camis) were simply not long enough :) and I didn't care I liked it that way :) for some occasion in the city - your look is stylish enough, shirt and just a peek! )

  12. If I was as fit as you, I would totally do it! Unfortunately don't have a flat enough tummy, lol. You look great!

  13. Gina, as J would say "approaching 30 is just a number, it is more about dressing for your body type"  your tummy in this case ;) Am I a good spokesperson or what ;))

  14. Yes!! That's exactly what I would say! :-) Age is just a number. No one would ever tell Jennifer Aniston not to wear mini-skirts because she looks amazing!

  17. Love it! Perfect for a bbq or hot summer day, but I'm not sure I could pull it off. I'm pretty conservative so if I'm already showing a lot of leg--I'd probably shy away from the midriff.

  18. Yes you should definitely go for it!!  It's very tastefully done and I agree with Trish, very chic and polished looking.  And I'm so happy to hear tying shirts is back in!!  I love the look and think it adds such a cute touch to outfits.

  19. Honestly?  I don't love seeing bare midriffs.  I prefer that they be covered up, unless people are at the beach.  That said, you do look very cute!

  22. I LOVE a slit of midriff and I did the same thing yesterday - chambray shirt tied up over Ikat-print shorts.  You look adorable!!!

  23. I personally love a little hint of midriff on certain outfits! I really like this particular look. I've also been dying to get a high waisted maxi skirt to wear with a cropped top. In the end, I think it's all about how much shows: a hint of skin isn't trashy at all; it's all in how you style yourself.

  24. I'm so pasty white that it would not do anyone any favours!  I'll leave the midriff action to you bronzed bods.

  25. You just nailed it! FAbuloso!!! (Is that even a word???) And I've been looking for a blouse like that forever. Thank you!

  26. I don't mind the midriffs for hanging with friends or something.  Very cute outfit.

  27. I think that is the perfect amount of visible midriff. More than that and you turn your shirt into a makeshift bikini top, anyways. You look super cute!  Note: When you said "what do you guys think" I first thought, guys should NEVER show their midriff LOL

I so want a pair of those shorts, though - but add three or four golden buttons (I love buttons on high-waisted shorts/pants).

  28. Haha, thanks Melissa! I guess I should have said, "what do you ladies think?" And I totally agree - I love those high-waisted shorts with gold buttons, sailor-style. I will consider doing that to these shorts as a future DIY, maybe next summer!

  29. I LOVE the look! I think you pull it off perfectly.

  30. YOU can pull this off, I'd even try if I weren't so pale! I'd also say this is an outdoor/beach/very casual look, but very, very cute.

  31. Adorable!! I love the inspiration outfit and yours is fantastic as well. Love those sandals.

  32. I was skeptical when I saw the title of this post, but after seeing the look, I have to admit: you look very cute and polished :)
