Today's Everyday Fashion: Art in Translation

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! Mine got off to a rough start, but ended on a high note. I had mole surgery on Friday and was not expecting recovery to be so complicated. The doctor axed our plans to go to the beach, and the four stitches in my armpit made for some serious pain and I haven't been able to move my right arm much. Why am I telling you this? 1. To remind everyone to have a mole screening if you haven't lately! I made an appointment thinking I was being silly, but it turns out that two moles needed to be removed, and one of them was pretty serious. (Note: My moles were not at all related to being in the sun. I have very dark skin naturally and I use SPF, but melanoma can be genetic, etc. and can happen to ANYONE, even if you are very careful about being in the sun.) Please don't miss this important check up no matter who you are! 2. I have such limited use of my arm, it's really hard to get dressed, so just a heads up that I might not be posting outfits for a couple days until I heal. (Boo.)

About my outfit: I absolutely love the idea of using art and/or a general color story for inspiration for an outfit. This page of Lucky magazine was just so pretty, I knew had to save it, and it inspired this outfit. I did more of a brown color (versus the gray) with my green and yellow, but I love their pairing as well. Tell me - where is the most random place you have gotten fashion inspiration from?

  1. I LOVE this outfit and the color scheme. Did you get those shorts recently?  Love love love them!

PS: Feel better :) and you are so right- skin is your largest organ so this is the best time of year to get that annual skin check!

  2. This is really amusing to me, J. The Limited is coming out with a brand new line today/tomorrow where I said to another "it looks like someone went to an art museum and transformed the paintings into tops." Looks like your source of fashion inspiration isn't that random after all :-)

  5. Kate, that is too funny! I can't wait to check it out.

  6. Thank you! I bought the shorts last summer. I've heard a couple readers say that Old Navy had shorts this color, and J.Crew has a ton of twill shorts on sale right now so you could look there!

  9. Oh I love this! These colors are so pretty together. I adore the bright shorts and the ruffles on the tank. You look awesome!

I'm really sorry to hear that the recovery was complicated. It sounds incredibly painful. I hope that the healing process goes more quickly from this point!

  10. I go to the dermatologist every 6 mos for a full body scan and I am only 38!  :(  I just had 2 moles removed last Tues. and biopsied and will know the results this week.  I have had approx. 9 taken off and biopsied in the past 2 yrs.  I agree---- it is VERY important to have a screening...esp. if you are like me: blonde, blue eyed and fair skin....and if skin cancer runs in your family.  Mine weren't painful like you are saying yours are.  Guess it depends on the area.

Anyway, you look great in the outfit post!  :)

  11. Jan, so glad to hear you are be proactive with your health! Sorry to hear you've had to have so many removed. The one on my knee isn't bothering me one bit, but my armpit is ridiculously painful. I'm guessing it has to do with how often I move it, and how it rubs all the time. It was also a HUGE mole so I'm not sure if that matters. I definitely nominate the armpit as the worst place ever to have stitches. :-(

  12. This is an outfit I would never think to put together, but it looks great!

  13. I had one in my belly button removed a few months ago and I don't like ANYone touching my belly button...that was my most painful one.  All of mine have turned out to be ok so far....skin cancer runs deep in my family and therefore I don't want to take a chance.  Many years ago I would bake in the sun, then I moved on to tanning beds....the past 3-4 yrs. I just go PALE!  :)  But, I am paying for my tanning now w/ the various biopsies!

I hope yours turn out ok, too!

  14. Oh yeah... a belly button would be high up on the painful list too! Yuck!! Melanoma also runs in my family. As a teenager I used to be outside all the time without SPF but not anymore!! My doctor said these moles were not sun-related at all, but it's still never worth taking the risk!

  15. J I hope you're feeling better soon! You gotta stay out of the sun lady!!

  16. Jillian, my doctor explained that my moles were not sun-related. It's a common misconception that you have to be in the sun to get melanoma, but it's not the case! Everyone should get checked, no matter how careful you are.

Also, this is kind of like saying "lay off the cigarettes" to me if I had posted that I had lung cancer (but was a non-smoker). I think it's interesting that we are so quick blame others/ourselves when cancer happens...

    ReplyDelete
  18. I didn't mean to offend you. FYI 93% of lung cancer is from smoking...so I would say it is natural to assume a patient suffers as a result of smoking. Similarly, almost 80% of skin cancer results from too much sun. As you live in FL and are very tan, I don't think it was unfair for me to think it was sun related.

Jillian, thank you. This is a personal subject for me because I have had countless people remark about my "tan" and tell me to lay off tanning since i started my blog. But I'm bi-racial, and it's my natural skin color. So even assuming that I'm "tanning" gets me going. :-)

  20. No problem--I'm in the medical field so I always feel the need to warn people about preventative dangers. Glad to hear you're not roasting in the sun!!

  21. I adore your shorts -- so much in fact that I have a pair myself (from J.Crew) in the same mustardy color. I purchased them yesterday and had no idea what to wear with them without looking like an Easter egg. I would have never come up with the combination, but it totally works. Kind of crazy how you post them the day after I bought them!

I'm addicted of yellow. This shorts look very good on you. Bright and  white is the most comfortable colour combination.

  23. I hope you feel better! It's a common misconception that you only get (dangerous) moles from being outside in the sun, tanning etc ... it can happen to anyone. I have very, very fair skin (call me Caspar the ghost) and I do get my skin checked once a year.
Thanks for reminding us readers about the importance of getting this checkup!

Maria, too funny! I've had the shorts for about a year so I have quite a few looks posted with them. I've done an olive shirt and turquoise necklace, a navy shirt and red belt, and a black shirt with brown shoes and belt, to name a few!

Partly why I get so upset when people reprimand me for my "tan" is because I don't ever want to be a poster child for bad sun habits! SPF, limited time outside, wearing a hat... I practice all of these and recommend everyone does too.

  30. This little segment that Lucky does is so neat! I love the outfits they come up with. They are always spot on- and with color and mood! Looks like you did a great job too!

  31. I love this outfit, the colors are amazing and you look great! I hope that you recover soon... I think that its great that you gave us that little glimpse into your life, you are so right - there are lots of little things that we all overlook like a mole, a toothache, anything really that could potentially be very serious... thanks for the PSA, sometimes we need to hear that stuff from people we look up to or can relate to.

I hope that you are feeling better soon :)

  33. I don't know that you "have very dark skin naturally" after seeing the difference in your skin in the photos in this post - in the second photo down you are pretty pale (and look great BTW).

    http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2010/09/my-fitness-story.html

In any event, glad you got the moles taken care of and hope you continue to stay sun-smart.

  34. Hi Emily, the photos in that post are the two extremes - the second photo down is what my skin looks like having not seen the sun for years (that's Boston for ya). The other photos are at the tail end of a vacation in Florida where I spent 8 hours outside for 10 days straight. It's all relative to how you personally perceive what "dark" means and maybe "very dark" is a bit of an exaggeration, but when I was born I was nicknamed "Papoose" in the delivery room b/c of my dark skin and black hair (I'm American Indian). People are constantly asking me "why I am so tan" so I have taken to describing myself as naturally dark so that people don't think I am practicing unsafe tanning practices (such as not using SPF or using tanning beds) because I never want to be a role model for that. I am naturally dark and I also get darker really, really quickly especially living in Florida. Hope that clears things up! :-)
