Today's Everyday Fashion: The Magic Trick

You might describe me as part stylist, part magician. I am always thinking of ways to re-use what I already have, but this look is a J's Everyday Fashion first because I'm wearing this sweater backwards! I'm actually not totally feeling this one - I love it from the front, but I'm not confident about the back. (And really, confidence in what you are wearing is 99% of your outfit.) That said - would you have the confidence to pull off this look? Would you ever wear a top backwards?

  1. I think it looks great! It works because so many styles recently have detailing on the back. I would never think to pair those colors together, but yet again, you've made it look fabulous :D great look!

  2. Love the colors together! The first thing I thought was, "that shirt looks backwards" before I ever read your text. So, I probably wouldn't do a backwards look personally. :-)

  3. Though I like the concept and you wear those colors beautifully I am not sure that THAT is the right shirt to do it with.  I don't like the way the shirt falls in the back.

  5. I kinda thought it was backwards before reading the text! Looks good on you. I would do it, but I don't like necklines so high up and tight around well, my neck! I really like the "real" front of that sweater though, it's interesting either way!

  6. I like it. I've worn shirts/sweaters backwards before. I think it looks backwards to some because we typically expect all the detail to be on the front, which, to me, is even more reason to wear it backwards.

  7. i dont like that one unfortunately. The neck of the sweater looks high, so from the front it kinda looks like you have it on backwards.. if there was no print on the back it might not be so obvious.
    Still loving your style!!

  8. I've worn a sweater backwards before, it only works if the tag is sewn up top and not at the sides because then it is a dead giveaway of your trick.  Usually I'll do this trick if I have a scoop neck and back so then the neckline is not so high.

  9. Krista, that is so rude!! Why in the world would you say my butt looks bad?! :-( I looked at this and thought "my butt is smokin hot"!! Why as women do we tear each other down? Not cool.

  10. Now that I look at it again I think the beads are too heavy and pull it down in the back = not the ideal sweater to do this with! :-)

  11. That was one of my questions - how obvious is it that it's backwards? I tend to agree, so another top might be better with this! (or just turned around even!)

  12. J- I think you're taking Krista's comment in the wrong way.  You asked for people's opinions and she gave you her opinion.  I personally feel the skirt is too tight and the attention is directly drawn to your bottom.  If that's your intention, then you succeeded.  You have a nice tush.  I just interpret that Krista (and I) don't want attention drawn to our tush in the same fashion.

  13. Lisa, I think you are taking Krista's comment the wrong way! She didn't say I have a nice tush like you did - she said it looks BAD and BIG. Those are never nice things to say to a woman, and why in the world are we talking about my bum in the first place?! I think that's off-limits to talk about personally...

  14. Yes!!  I've done that, especially with v-necks like that!  It gives the top another whole look, and it's kinda a little sexy too!

  15. I think you're butt is smokin too!!! The skirt is probably too tight for work, but looks good for other occasions!

  17. I don't dislike it, but I would feel a little funny with my shirt backwards. Very innovative!

  18. I personally like. I think it is a risk-win!

  19. I love it, but think it could be a completely viable outfit to wear out if you added your while Victoria Secret blazer over it. You said you were confident about the back, but with the blazer no one would know! Plus it would tie right in with your white bag :) Love it!

  20. I totally agree Megs!! I think this would be perfect with   blazer and no one would ever guess that my sweater was backwards! :-)

  21. Why did my comment get deleted? I didn't think I was rude, I had no idea we had to love the outfit in order for our posts to stay?

  22. i really think your attitude toward this whole blogging thing is very healthy. you are open to opinions and suggestions. unlike other bloggers who delete not so positive comments and tells them to just email her. *cough*wiw*cough*.  i salute you, j.  keep it up!!!

  23. Thank you, I really appreciate that! Full disclosure: I totally deleted a comment on this post today, haha! I hate doing it, but she told me my bum looked huge and I thought that was inappropriate. I'm always up for discussing fashion, but I think personal features like that are not appropriate. Maybe she didn't mean anything by it, and maybe I'm just being silly but at some point I feel like I have to draw a line. It's always a tough call though!

  24. J, this is super cute! I love the color combo and never would have thought to wear the shirt backwards!

  26. I discovered mjrsales a few years ago, because I like Victoria's Secret clothing. I've tried to like mjrsales, but it's sooo hard to search for what I want..plus the pictures of the garments really don't do them justice. Granted that mjrsales is giving you the items you want, but how do you ever find something there? I feel like it would take me hours to find one thing. Any tips on how to cut that time down? TIA!

P.S. Victoria's Secret usually has some great codes periodically and I've been able to get all my items much cheaper than on Mjrsales.

  27. I do it pretty often. I think it depends on the type of top/dress. I think what you wore might be easier to be confident about if both sides were completely plain.

I wore a dress backwards last week. It had pretty similar necklines to your top (deep v in the front, normal in the back) so when it was reversed, it just looked like I was wearing a dress with a low back. Piling on necklaces on top of the high front helped I think cause I think it sort of tells me "Yeah this IS the front of my top and I know it" hahaha

  28.  J - I saw that comment before it was deleted and, in my opinion, that is not at all what she said to you.  I think all she was trying to say was that she didn't think it was the most flattering outfit compared to other outfits you've posted but I think one thing that your readers really appreciate about you is that you are willing to be creative and take fashion risks.  You always stay true to yourself and show us that you can still be fashionable on a budget!  : )

  29. You deleted mine too and I said you had a nice tush!!

  30. I actually didn't delete your comment. Something is wrong with Disqus b/c there are several perfectly lovely comments that I can see in the back end of the blog, but they aren't publishing! Really frustrating!! :-(

  31. Thanks Meg - I think the way you phrased it is completely appropriate! But the direct reference to my bum being big in the other comment felt like an attack on my body and me personally, and NOT anything to do with fashion.

  32. Anna, I use the "New Arrivals" section exclusively. That's where the best stuff lives before it sells out, and it doesn't take long to scroll through it. Also, here's a link to my post about the secrets of shopping there that has more tips: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/03/todays-everyday-fashion-my-new.html

ps. I'm shocked to hear that!! I've never had a good experience shopping at Victoria's Secret online. It always seems expensive, especially what they charge for shipping.

  33. I love this look though!  I would have never known had you not said you were wearing it reversed.  I'm also obsessed with those Stella & Dot necklaces!

  34. I love this! The embellishment of the top looks very intentional as a back design. I think that is the key. Love your use of color. I love it, but I don't always feel brave enough to wear it!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm 100% with you on this one. I love love love it from the front, but then the back, while interesting, just makes it obvious that it's a backwards sweater rather than a sweater with back details. But it is inspiring… and I do love plunging back and beaded details. That said, no I don't think I would wear this look out, but something similar, yes (ie: a sweater with and interesting back).
Love your blog, following now :)
