Today's Everyday Fashion: Ahoy Matey

Some outfits have a theme or genre. Like today's look, which would clearly be marked "nautical." You can also create outfits that mix genres - such as a girlie pink dress with combat boots (romantic + military). But with all these themes flying around, how does one not wind up going overboard? (nautical pun intended)

I have a quick test for this: if your outfit would could be worn to ANY costume party (including a Mad Men themed party!), then you might want to switch something out (use a piece from another era) to make your outfit a bit more modern. I think today's look is about as far as I would take one theme, and although it could be the start of a great costume, for Halloween I would wear it with red pumps, a full skirt and a sailor hat. :-) Tell me - how do you determine if an outfit has crossed over into costume territory?

  2. I would like to add a little more costume to my look because you need just a little bit for that zing!   And you have struck the perfect balance here.  Enough of the elements of a look to look put together without looking like Ellie Mae at the Clampett's costume party, remember that episode?  Kidding aside, I agree that a person can't go totally overboard with their look.  Concerning the mad men look, I've always heard that tip that if you want to look modern at least part of your outfit should not be vintage.  Great post as usual.  Debbie

  3. I NEED those jeans! Can you post the link for them? Love your outfits! And those pink shoes yesterday were friggin' rad. Don't listen to all those negative nellies - they're just jealous cause you're super cute, skinny, and look great in everything you wear. Keep on rockin!

  4. I don't have a lot to add to the conversation of how to avoid going too costumey, but I just wanted to say that those shoes are fab!

  8. Looking super cute as usual!  I love the gold accents, too!

And you looked adorable in both looks yesterday.  People who make negative comments are just being mean to be mean and are obviously unhappy about something else in their life!  Try not to take it too personally.  Some people are just rude!  XO

  10. Thanks @1b47acf029a445fef3e31f4307c141e7:disqus ! I have thick skin at this point, so I don't let nasty comments get to me!! I don't love having to delete them though, so I won't be doing posts like that again in the future.

  11. Love it! It looks very, very classy! I have way too many 'nautical' items in my wardrobe and I really have to be careful not to overdo it, if you now what I mean. I went shopping at H&M on Friday and came home with two shirts that have blue&white stripes ... I'm a bit obsessed.

  12. OMG- I just so happened to stumble upon your blog and it couldn't have come at a better time!  I just recently moved into a new house and have been totally into decorating it..unfortunatly that means my creativity regarding my wardrobe has come to a complete halt.  Thank you for inspiring me and reminding me to take care of myself too! YOU ROCK!

  16. This is such a perfect look, I am a travel agent and I specialize on cruises so I can tell you without a doubt that I and a lot of my guest would wear something like this on cruises but can also use it anytime back home!  As for costume territory I just go show my husband and my son (daughter is not always available) if they start laughing or give me that bewildered look then it is time to change something  :)

  17. I love this look! I love clothes from the 1940s (hats!) and 1950s (full skirts). If I wear a 40s hat, I'll wear modern pants or a dress (unless it's for a theme party!).

  18.  Absolutely love the nautical look!!!  I totally get your "costume" question though and I agree, you need to have at least one piece that brings you back to reality. PS  LOVE the pink shoes in the other post - definitely keep!!!! http://sweetandsassy-sherry.blogspot.com/

@a4778b76edb81b80a11c459b18657e66:disqus Unfortunately I bought the sweater about 3 years ago online. It's really similar to one that Tory Burch had out that year.

  25. Cute outfit! I have a question for you: Didn't you say that you can make returns to Forever 21 even if you don't have the receipt as long as the tags are still attached? I tried this today and I was denied:( I bought some clothes online and I think the return papers got tossed with the bag they came in...just doesn't seem fair when the clothes are obviously unworn.

@027b3c17443c77d2541c241aba2f88b3 I haven't tried it in awhile, but it used to work. Did you try to return though, or exchange? That makes a big different. If you tried to return, I would go back and attempt an exchange. They are weird about giving store credit for some reason.

  27. There is something timeless about navy and white... the funky tee and heels keep it sassy and updated! Another fab look!

I have a question on how you car for your clothes...a lot of the time you say that you have had a certain sweater, jeans etc for 2+ years, and I always think they look brand new.  Do you think you could do a post on how you care for and clean and store different clothing items.  For example...a lot of time my sweaters get faded or ball up and look really worn.  Do you have tips on how to keep items looking brand new or in good condition?  What about shoes?  Sometimes the heels get really scratched up..Are there ways to prevent this?
Do you have a lot of your things dry cleaned?
Sorry for all of the questions, but this is something that I am always trying to figure out...you spend sooo much $$$ on clothes/shoes and then they look worn after a few wears.

Thanks...and LOVE LOVE LOVE all of your outfits!!!  You rocked the pink shoes!!! :)

  30. What does Gap call those white ankle jeans? I can't find them. I find similar for $60, but not those for $30.  ??

  31. misty I've had these jeans for 2 years - they were called cropped jeans. I also bought them on sale (I never pay full price at the Gap, they always have coupons!).

  32. stephanie_walter0409 This is a great question, and I will plan on doing a little post about it sometime. For the most part though I hand wash (in the sink) most of my clothes and then let them air dry. I also use Dryel (at home dry-cleaning). For shoes, you pretty much have to expect that they will get banged up if you wear them a lot. You can use Scotch Guard to protect against rain, and a shoe repair person can replace heel tips and/or try to remove scuffs but eventually you just have to replace old shoes. Hope this helps!
