Flashback Friday: Tribal Skirt

[Click the photo to view it larger.] At first glance, there are a limited number of things you can wear with a patterned skirt (Limited, $30 from July 2010). I think most people's first instinct is to wear the most obvious solid color on top (in this case, black) and leave it at that. But a patterned skirt can be way more versatile than you think! I love the idea of pairing a black and ivory skirt with browns and olive, mustard and red, pops of turquoise or even an attempt at mixing prints (last photo). I also think this skirt would look great with a bright blue cardigan (a la this look). Which look is your favorite? What are your favorite colors to pair with black and white/ivory?

Shopping tips: Looking for a similar skirt? Try this one from The Limited. Leave your finds in the comment section and I'll add them to the post!

  1. I love this skirt! When you did the look with the mustard cardigan and red belt, i thought i had to have it! I got the one from Limited and i was super excited...especially since it has a vertical (instead of horizontal) pattern and therefore balances my wide hips to my smaller upper body! Thanks for all the great ideas!

Wow...all of the looks you did with this skirt are incredible and I just love the skirt!! I will put many things with black and white...most recently blue and purple! I tend to want to always do red...so I am experimenting with other colors.

  3. I bought a black and white printed skirt at Nordstrom Rack (can't find it online) and wore it with a magenta cardigan and ruffled magenta cami.

  10. I love the mustard combo too.. N idea of pairing with a blue cardigan..but I have a question...I am skinny and if I wear a belt...it looks like I have no waistline..I look very thin..do u have any suggestions of what to do?

  11. I have very little difference between my waist and hips (maybe 2-3 inches), so partly why I use belt so much is to help me create a waist. If you belt around the smallest part of your waist, and pull the belt fairly tight then you should help create more of a curve to your body! Hope that helps! I also put together this video awhile back about belting your waist: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2010/11/video-how-to-belt-cardigan_12.html

  15. I have several patterned skirts that I always have a hard time with. I tend to rely on a plain white or black top to go!

  17. J, I'm so glad you posted this! I've actually been using your photos as a model for a similar skirt I have. It's BROWN and ivory though. Do you have any suggestions on what colors would look good with it? I tried pairing it with a black shirt, per your photo #1, but friends told me it didn't look right. I don't have a brown top yet but I'm looking for one.

  18. Elena, you are right - I don't see a black shirt working with a brown and ivory skirt. Anything in the brown family would be good - a burnt orange, maroon, olive, mustard, a deep red would all be pretty. You could also go with a true brown, I would just make sure the brown in your shirt is enough of a contrast between the brown in your skirt.

  19. Love #'s 1 and 4, especially 4...just something very mischievious about it, lol. I also liked the turquoise with the black and white. For me, I think I would try red, hot pink, and even, perhaps, lime green.

  22. Look 1 is definitely an obvious combination to come up with, but look 2 is my fave because its so imaginative! I wouldn't have thought of putting together a black patterned skirt with a yellow cardigan and throwing in a splash of red. Really like look 3 as well.

  23. I am going to shoot myself for not buying this skirt I loved. However I found something similar at The Limited a few months later, which I love. My absolute favorite way you have worn this is by mixing prints. That's been the biggest thing to hit fashion this year, as long as they are in the same colors. Love the 5th look but I also really like 1 & 2. As far as shoes go I think this skirt is meant for your black stilettos in pics 1 & 4. Try wearing this skirt with a bright blue top like the one you have from Express. It would also look great with a Red, Purple or Pink Top and with Red or Pink Shoes.

  24. I love look 3 although I can't pull of the skinny belt. But I could do a colored cardigan and matching shoes? I love the pop of red with the black and ivory!
