Today's Everyday Fashion: Well That's Just Random

Today's look is a bit of a loose interpretation. For some reason this random combo popped into my head when I spotted the inspiration photo in a J.Crew catalog, so even though it wasn't a close match, I just rolled with it. Sometimes going with your first instinct pays off!

Why this works: Some outfits are all about matching your colors closely. Other outfits work because they pair completely random colors. In today's look. I mixed three totally different tones (pastels, brights, neutrals) into one random but polished look. Don't be afraid to try this at home. :-)

Occasion: Work
Inspiration photo: J.Crew
Cardigan: H&M, $18
Shirt: Banana Republic, $15
Skirt: Banana Republic, $40
Belt: Gap, $15
Necklace: Banana Republic, $20
Shoes: BCBG/Ross, $23
Watch: Michael Kors, Christmas present
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8

  1. I like your interpretation. Color is so important. This may seem odd but I am havign a hard time figuring what kind of outfit to wear to this Friday night fashion meetup I have to attend. I dont want to be too conservative since its Fri night and the people are very stylish. Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

  3. Do the people at your job know about your blog? Are they as wowed by your looks as we all are?

  4. Aggie, I went to a fashion blogger meet-up on a Friday night a couple months ago and I went with a dress with tights. When it's a fashion event, I say feel free to get creative!

  6. Ps. But yes at my marketing job my outfits were often a topic of conversation. It's partly why I started a blog! :-)

  7. You're inspiring me to start printing these off and keeping them in my room so that I don't forget how I can pair things.. :) How does your husband feel about your being in my bedroom?? HAhAHAHAhah!!!

  8. Just wanted to say in reference to the deals J finds at Gap stores. I was in a store yesterday, all marked down tops, and there were many to choose from, were an additional 30% off. I got a sweater for $16 that is still $45 on the website. So, thanks J! I'll be checking in stores more often now and I think it's the same at Old Navy where I have found amazing deals in the past couple of months.

Also thanks for the inspiration on things that I've never been good at. I started wearing belts which I haven't done for years.

  10. Great outfit! I think its time to buy a similar cardigan :-)

Can you please do a post with basic/must-haves that you can pair with multiple outfits? I didn't see anything like that in your archive. Thx!

  11. J, It was pointed out by one of my commenters that you, me and Kendi are all wearing similar cardigans today. I thought it was so cute that I linked you both in today's post: Moms Have Style, Too!

  17. I love that skirt and little red belt! I love yellow because it's so happy but I can't wear it! Can brunettes with olive skin & gray eyes wear yellow?

  18. I think anyone can wear yellow, you just have to find a shade that works for your skin tone! I have very olive skin (this picture is of me at my palest/most natural skin tone with no tan), so I'm guessing we have similar coloring? I think this shade would look lovely on you. :-)

  21. I've never posted a basics/must-have list because I don't believe in them!! :-) Not every woman needs a black pencil skirt or trench coat. It varies so much depending on where you live and what you do for a living, that you really have to come up with a list for each woman individually!

  22. I love your cardigan. Is it recent? I went to H&M this week but didn't see it.

  23. No, I got the cardigan last fall. They have tons of great colors right now for cardigans though! I bought the bright blue one I wore earlier this week, and I love kelly green one too.
